I'm not sure if I'm following. Yo Elem, what's your darkest anime with the grim"est" plot you have in mind?
Uh, if I had to pick a most one, probably Monster or Akira.
Perfect Blue, Aoi Bungaku, Texhnolyze (just for you spazer) and Grave of the Fireflies are other ones with sensible and reliable grim and/or dark plot.
Edit: This Cheep. Wao.

Ty, ill check them out
Yea, I figured Madoka was sketchy. I enjoyed it alot, but from I've read on TLADT, it doesn't seem to be that praised ^^

Not exactly grimderp, but Gundam 0080. Gungrave was very interesting as well.
Manga I'd say Gunslinger Girl

Actually, dark plot doen't go well with anime. Very few can be comfortably labelled as dark and none of them popular. It seems manga, novel or game all provide better dark works than anime.

This means things are good when they're popular?

It depens how strictly we define dark... But for example, one could say that Madoka isn't exactly your typical light atmosphere anime. But on the other hand, it isn't "all dark". Without clear definitions of light/dark, I'd probably rate most gundam I've seen as neutral. I'd probably rate most gundams I've seen as neutral. Gantz, madoka are probably darkish Highschool dxd light -_-
I believe I enjoy more "more mature anime". That doesn't mean that I can't enjoy some comedy or light ones.
The only genre I can't stand are harem. Not enough story content in anime like Highschool DxD XD. Beside, if I were into that sort of thing, I fail to see why I should watch "tease" (aka Harem - girls with little to no clothes). I'll just go all-in with porn or hentai (no clothes).

A perfect example is 'Denpa teki na Kanojo' the vol1 &3 were animated but vol 2 with a very decent dark plot never get adaptation. Just to show why even among ACG the anime is the worst place to look for particularly dark plot.

Well popularity don't make things good But lack of popularity do make things rare Sad but true.

step #1: Watch Baka test step #2: embrace light hearted shows / comedy

I wonder if people who say things like "My Japanese cartoons have to be dark, have lots of gore, and have a grim plot" ever get tired of pretending to be an edgy teenager.

Just a matter of tastes really. some people enjoy Justin Bieber, some enjoy classical musics, some enjoy pop, some enjoy heavy metal. There's nothing wrong to want something specific from your japanese cartoons

Not if the show in question that is most likely designed to be watched by 13 to 16 year olds, because everything that is 16+ is hentai obviously, has a very mind-challenging plot that makes you question your life so far!

But what always gets me are people who seem to think that something must be grimdark in order to be good. Or even worse, its good if its grimdark (for example, people who think SnK is the greatest thing ever becaues its 'grimdark').

So wait, why is Madoka not dark? I don't know if the movies changed some things from the show, but the ending to the movie was pretty depressing + Show Spoiler +being that no matter what they did, the cycle still had them being fucked, and Madoka's sacrifice was in vain.

+ Show Spoiler +Among all the crazy things this episode, there's a suspicious looking collar around Chris's neck...
...and can Maria stop being so fucking useless, Jesus Christ.
