Don't worry it. You're mostly right than a high percentage that most anime is garbage.

The Madoka fanbase is fucking cancerous and if there was any show I could erase in the past decade it would be that. People who think Madoka is groundbreaking/revolutionary come into discussion threads for actual kids shows and spout off nonsense about how totally dark the show actually is guys really come on!
There is more fucked up shit in some of the actual 'magical girl' manga/anime targeted at younger audiences then in Madoka which makes it all the more hilarious.
PS - ~deconstruction~ Was this a troll post or were you serious? (Or both?) He is, and he's right. Sailor Moon, aers' favorite series, has some really, really, really, really fucked up shit in it. I can think of two others that are almost as fucked up. Would Utena be one of those two?
|
Wasn't the Sailor Moon that was shown in the US heavily edited? I didn't watch much of it "back in the day," but I remember hearing that at least. I'm also curious about those other fucked up magical girls shows. I've only watched Madoka and Nanoha.

Madoka is probably one of the best examples of "I hate it because it's popular." People seem to think the only reason it sells is because of the kids dying, which is simply not true. The problem with it being so popular is that when it does get discussed, everyone rushes out to give their opinions and usually don't really do a fair review of it. It's like describing something like Sailor Moon as "It's just tits." You're best just watching it and making your own opinion and not bother asking, since all it does it get people mad, same with stuff like the monogatari's, eva, anything that sells quite well really.
As far as the fanbase goes I don't really care. They tend to stick to their own threads so if you don't want to read about Madoka, you don't have to. That's just from the forums I use though, I can't comment on others.
Also grimdark is where they just add in "dark" elements for the sake of it, like Elfen Lied or something. If it's done well, through story or whatever, it's just dark. That's just my definition though.

Also, since you mentioned Elfen Lied,
Fuck Lucy, she's a bitch.

That is not true. Madoka has its own fair share of problems; problems with character appeal, pacing, ramming shock value down our throats to enhance an emotional response from the audience, and a relatively predictable plot (a good portion of the entire fanbase pretty much figured what was going on by episodes 5/6). The ending was also strange considering they + Show Spoiler +made a bunch of historically prominent but persecuted women as magical witches, which I felt was kind of dumb and unnecessary.
Granted, I liked Madoka, but to say that the anime is one of those "I hate it because it's popular" is ignoring the fact that the story has gaping problems in its execution that warrants fair criticisms.

Eh I thought that was all alright. It's not my favourite series ever, but it's no worse than a 7/8 out of 10
I only say "I hate it because it's popular" because of the style of posts that are used to describe it really. From aers post on the last page, the only reasons he gives are because it's edgy and the fanbase is cancerous. That's not really a fair assessment of the anime and if you're going to give your opinion on it, then that doesn't really say why you don't like it.
That kind of post is a "I hate popular things" post. If you disliked it (let's pretend) using the reasons you stated, then that's fine. Those are legitimate reasons, while edgy is not a reason. The problem with anyone bringing up Madoka is that usually, on both sides, people just write awful long posts with no real information in it and it just turns into a shitflinging contest between those who love it and those who hate it.
Which is also why it comes under my 'Just watch it" recommendation list, since trying to discuss it anywhere is usually pointless.

"Hate because it's popular" is such a cop out excuse to disregard legitimate complaints. I like Madoka, but it's soooooo overrated, it's not even funny. Its popularity is so ridiculous and most of the praises for it are pretty dumb. I read half the SAO novels before the anime aired and hated it. And then somehow the anime made it worse but was still stupidly popular. As for Eva, there's a separate thread for that filled with arguments. There's also the corollary argument of "it's good because it's popular." With these 2 lines, you can actually prove that if enough people like a show, it has no flaws!

To be fair, when 98% of anime is shit, its easy to overrate things just because it seems better by comparison.

SAO definitely belongs in that 98%

I loved Madoka because I hadn't seen much anime at the time of watching (actually, I still haven't seen much) and the music was enjoyable. You could say limited breadth is skewing perceptions and expectations, but that seems too reasonable

I wonder why people like SAO so much, it was pretty crap.

Maybe they are really young? Idk.. but if you are over a certain age it should be clear that SAO is some shit.

A vast majority of television watchers yearn for protagonists with whom they can sympathize, idolize, etc. It makes them feel more secure about their lives as generally unproductive couch potatoes when they see a random MMO player saaaaave the woooorld. They don't want to connect with unfit characters like Haruyuki, which is why Accel World is much less popular despite being better in many ways.
Also loli.

Sure is edgy in here with all the "anime is SHIT" talk.

The effect does. A lot of very talented people work really hard to produce terrible anime, but you don't sing their praises. Conversely, if Evangelion became a masterpiece by accident, that shouldn't make any difference either. I'm in the camp who saw the show when it debuted, thought it was meh, and put it away. When I rewatched it years later, I realized how much I had missed. You might say it isn't deep, but I feel like all of Eva's depth is organic and comes from the characters' natural behavior or little things thrown in randomly, as you mentioned. It forces you to pay attention and rewards you for doing so. Other series often attempt to recreate this atmosphere, but can't, because when it's overly manufactured it comes off like teenage angst. Author's intent pretty important mang. Also, I told myself I'd watch the TV series before I finished my 300th entry on MAL, and since I just finished #294, I think I'm gonna get started soon. Yeah, watch it. You'll probably enjoy it since you always have that sad face emoticon. I was depressed as fuck when I watched it (first anime I watched, cause of the thread on TL and cause I was depressed) and it was great, kind of just depressed me more though lol. I got my shit sorted eventually though. What....oh. I haven't turned off this emoticon in forever. At least you don't go :p whenever you see GRIMDARK... SUFFERING... like some people here do >.< Which anime do you consider to be grimdark? Can't think of a lot of them to be honest, but frankly I haven't watched that many anime to begin with. Jin-Roh the Wolf Brigade maybe, Shigofumi to an extent, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy...I want to say Lain but I don't think that's what I'd consider "grimdark." Darker than Black. I see. I just feel people tend to miuse and overuse the word by calling dark shows grimdark (dark ≠ grimdark). Definitely wouldn't call Lain grimdark, I can see it for Texhnolyze or DtB though. Dunno about the others. On May 08 2013 03:28 ragz_gt wrote: The synposis of Madoka is REALLY troll. That synopsis is actually pretty funny.
