Typically I wouldn't recommend VN's like Clannad, Rewrite, LB, and ML to newer VN readers, simply because of the requirement to read every single route before you figure out what is actually happening. My recommendation would look like this, for English readers looking for a VN in a certain genre that would hook them to the medium; Ef - A fairy tale of the two Kara No Shojo Tsukihime Sharin no Kuni Aselia Narcissu series Sekien no Inganock Sengoku Rance Saya no Uta Things I would not recommend for first time readers; Anything by Key except Kanon Standard bishoujo games like Hoshizora, Katawa Shoujo Muv Luv because of length, unless you are both M and /m/ like sent. Things I would recommend people gouge their eyes out before reading; The fate series becuase of shirou. The sono hanabira series, because if you want porn, just watch porn. Utaware and TtT, because they're just plain terrible. G-senjou, bbbbbbbbbbbblllllehhhhhhhhhhhh. Kira Kira and every other Overdrive novel. We just released common route, with about 20% of Kotori route. Uta and Eca recommend waiting for the complete version, which should come within a year at our current progress, but I enjoyed reading just the common.
Narcissu is simply amazing
I wish I could find a way to get the 3rd =/ Oh well, checking out the rest of the cuz yea...some of them are good =p

For a first anime I can see the following three working quite well: Black Lagoon, Death note, FMA (either work but I'd say go Brotherhood.)

...just download it? It was pretty terrible though, wasn't by original author of narcissu so I don't personally count it as part of the series.
Allright Genre, I guess Horror / Psychological / Supernatural is what i like most Also love fantasy, some mecha is okay but i'm not nuts for it. I've watched most of K-ON but for some reason just stopped (due to uni i think?), i'll check out Saki, thanks for the responses guys
Serial Experiment Lain, The first episode of Ga-rei Zero, Mononoke, Paranoia Agent, Ghost Stories english dub, Hellsing OVAs, Gyo, Haibane Renmei, Mnemosyne.
And of course the greatest horror anime of all time, Bible Black.

I love the current direction anime is taking, though it seems so different from the previous nice and warmhearted arcs. I'm surprised people are actually dying, in kind of a gruesome manner at that. I don't think anyone on big catch died though, so said Marika, I may have missed whoever died.
I just assumed alot of the crew died because 3 ships were destroyed and only the main one lived? Also I think no one lived for the first ship that was briefly showed under attack

He can watch the whole thing (Ga-rei Zero) imo, the first episode is good (and gives a good wtf-moment), but so is the rest of it.
Oh and lol Bible Black.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha I just want to mention how cute/hot the Demon Lord/Crimson Scholar is. And what with the absurd amount of manga adaptions swear there is at least 3-4 manga with similar art, telling the same story.

So, are there any outstanding anime in similar categories to the above that i should check out? The genius IQ of the protagonists in Death Note and Code Geass particularly appeal to me, too.
Wow that's quite a group. Not sure if I know of any others that run the Genius IQ thing well. Maybe Detective Conan? But that's more of a strictly traditional crime and solve crime set of stories. And it's HELLA long.
If you're willing to go outside that box I'd recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Craziest thing I've ever seen and has excellent animation to boot. (This one is one season.)

I didn't really feel like giving any recommendations since he claims to have seen, or tried to watch, all the anime in the recommendation list (which smells like BS imo), but Legend of the Galactic Heroes fits the bill of a show with "protagonist with genius IQ". Its older, and much longer, but IMO its one of the best anime ever made, and a favorite of many people in this thread.

Not only is the show older, so is many of the characters. Might be a turn-off for some, but it's nice to get away from the high school drama once in awhile, since so many animes focus on it.

Although, you technically should have watched it already if you claimed to have seen everything on that list.
Speaking of elem, when is that grudge match suppose to be happening?
