My old man really liked TTGL, but he wants to watch a less silly robot show, so I immediately thought of Gundam. Which do you think is best to show him first? I like the first few series, but the art is a bit dated, so I want something a bit more modern. Wing was my first, and is still pretty good, but maybe one of the newer ones? I wasn't a huge Seed fan, but at least it was pretty. Why not read sent's guide to gundam, he JUST wrote it... http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=332650 Yeah, I saw it. I'm not sure, I kind of still want to start with Wing. I know it's not the best, maybe a B- as far as Gundam goes, but I think if we do MSG or Zeta, the dated visuals will be a turn off for someone newer who's not really a "connoisseur" of anime. I still think Seed is way too melodramatic, but that's probably just my opinion.
i only watched 08th MS team, that is short and good at the same time and should be perfect for a testing run.
also i found a good manga, "historie" feels like an intellectual berserk, i am reaaally liking it so far!

Ok, long story short, my mom was recently diagnosed with cancer, and is having surgery next friday. She'll be laid up for 3-4 weeks, and I'll be with her while she heals up. She wants to watch an anime with me so she can have something more in common with me while we have the time.
What can we watch together? I doubt giant robot shows or harem will pique her interest as much as it will mine. Do you have any, any suggestions? My sincerest thanks.

If you don't pick from your absolute faves, what's the point? You wont really end up having anything in common if you don't do so.

What would you and your mom be interested in watching then? Action? Comedy? Drama? Fanatsy? Sci-Fi? Otherwise I'd probably just say FMA. First or second version, your choice.
Maybe Totoro? but I think that might hit a little too close to home =\.

I mean, my favorites are Samurai Champloo and FLCL, but I want it to be something we both will enjoy. I doubt Samurai Champloo will fit that, and FLCL is just silly. FMA probably is good, since we'll have time to do the whole thing, or maybe a Miyazaki film.
Mostly, are there any good dramas (as in, non-action oriented) series that a 45 year old woman would enjoy? She's not as nerdy as me, but she's open to a lot of things.

Seirei no Moribito is pretty great. It does have some action (beautifully choreographed at that), but there's a great surrogate mother/son relationship that's developed over the course of 26 episodes that might work well. Just fantastic animation, characters and story overall.

I guess I would recommend comedies. Hayate no Gotoku would be a good, generic comedy. If you like more action, Gintama is king. If you want slapstick, then Nichijou. If you want more drama, go for Nodame.

You should start from looking at you've watched and taking a handful that you think she might like. I have no idea what you or your mom's tastes are, so it's pretty much up to you. However, I would not take a full length series initially. You may want to start out with movies (i.e. Miyazaki, Shinkai) and gauge what she may like in terms of anime. Then you can work your way into episodic series.

In that case I would start off with

soooooo many to choose from that are ridiculously good. In my family only my brother is interested in anime but the rest have all seen a handful of the Ghibli movies (the more famous ones in the west were marathoned on a swedish TV channel and I told them we should watch them all) and they enjoyed them a LOT even if it's their only experience w/ anime. They're very easy to "get into", even if some can feel a bit WTF in the start. Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke for example is like that. So that recommendation gets a big thumbs up from me.

Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are always safe choices and good movies. Don't think I've ever met someone who disliked them. I second the opinions that you should probably start with something "safe" and then figure out where to go from there based on her tastes.
For TV Series though, if I had to give a blind list:
- Hayate no Gotoku for a Romance Comedy (although she may not understand some of the references but it's still very entertaining)
- Nichijou is a great Slice of Life Comedy that's accessible to all, although rather Python-esque in its sense of humour
- Usagi Drop is another Slice of Life that she might appreciate
- Cowbow Bebop for something Action and it also has a great soundtrack
- Full Moon o Sagashite is a nice series, but I'm not sure whether it would be suitable given your circumstances
- Hōrō Musuko is just something I'm going to add here because maybe it might be nice.

Miyazaki films I think are always a good option. Aishiteruze Baby and Usagi Drop come to mind since they deal with raising kids, maybe your mom will enjoy them. KEY works are usually well liked, but I don't think they'd be good (stuff dealing with death in general) for a mom with cancer. Could have either positive or negative effects and none of us here can really say for sure.
I think you should just list out any drama that you enjoyed and watch it with her. Then you can explain to her how stuff works and why you like x character and things like that. I think it really should be more about how well it'll spark communication between you two rather than how "good" the show is. I think you'd be surprised how little she actually cares about the quality of the show (not to say this isn't important) but rather that she just wants to learn what her kid likes so much

From the synopsis of Usagi Drop it sounds good, though.

Anyway, I have to go now. Thank you all so much for your help. I hope it brings us a bit closer in the time left

I didn't like Howl's Moving Castle. I thought it was bad.
