Gauron Well, other than Fumoffu and the short stories, you don't quite get the sense of how dire his situation at the school really is, and in those it is veiled by a mask of comedy. From just watching the animes, you wouldn't really be able to tell that if it wasn't for the Principal and Hayashimizu, Sousuke would've been forced out of school a long time ago. The above is how I feel in hindsight after reading the novels, just the anime would've gotten the idea across, but in a really vague sense that hardly feels like it is the main point. If you were talking about Mr. K (or whatever he went by in the anime, the psycho), though, he was pretty weak. Can't even prescribe any plot device function to him.

Well what is the point of testing yourself and confronting yourself, if there isn't much of a threat to yourself in the first place? With a villain like Gauron, I knew that if Sousuke didn't get his shit together he would be in a dangerous situation, but with the other characters, they never really seemed like much of a threat. Whether or not Sousuke's inner conflict didn't really mean much at all. In the entire season (I'm going to sound very very critical) there was probably one point where I actually thought that Sousuke would be in real danger if he didn't get his shit together. I mean the in the entire run of FMP, I think Chidori's situation in Eps 7,9 was the most dramatic because at that point I didn't know how Chidori could even begin to protect herself.

Yes, there are heavy elements of school life, but that's mostly gags on how a former child guerrilla has trouble fitting in. FMP was the primary reason I liked KyotoAnimation, not Haruhi season 1. Anyway, there's suppose this litmus test to see how much of an anime otaku you are, via identification of 300 anime songs in the year 2005-2008. Here I was able to identify 102 songs, but there's a lot of anime I watched back then that I would never watch now. 270 is suppose to be the passing benchmark for being a true otaku. Oh God I recognized too many... I recognized 243 ![]()

Because it really wasn't too much of an issue of Sousuke's physical well-being, it was his inner conflicts. These characters brings us to note that Sagara Sousuke isn't the perfect soldier, but just another human being, one who is very much struggling with how he has been conditioned versus the environment that he is in now, as well as what is expected of him and what he wants to do for himself. In terms of Sousuke's life though, pretty much every point in season 1 to TSR where the lambda drive isn't working, he is in a dire situation. That first fight in season 1 with Gauron should've impressed upon everyone how completely broken lambda drive is. EDIT - This is rather running in circles though, so to make it more clear. No lambda drive practically means dead Sousuke, Sousuke's mental condition linked to lambda drive, Sousuke's inner conflicts become a major point of the story. Every point where lambda drive doesn't work and Sousuke stays alive, he got lucky (one instance) or was allowed to stay alive by the opposition. There's probably no one in this thread that can beat you, though, with the exception of konadora

And I entirely echo this sentiment: The theme in TSR is not Mithril vs evils-of-the-world, but rather Sousuke confronting himself. And since I'm a sucker for angst (and naked twincestous lesbians) TSR was by far my favorite FMP. Season 1 actually seemed to do a far worse job of mixing seriousness and humor, while TSR had its humorous moments while preserving the drama of its intense moments.

You have no idea how much I procrastinate because of just "one more episode". I completely fail at that song recognition thing (73). I've watched maybe a quarter of the anime whose songs are featured there. The rest I know from playing Osu.
