Exclude Lain, Now and Then, Here and There, Evangelion, and Boogiepop. Argento Soma, GTO, Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun. For comedy, I really enjoyed Azumanga Daioh and Excel Saga. Well, just throwing some names out there that you probably already heard. I'm personally more a fan of anime from the early 2000s.

Wish I hadn't put off watching Railgun. I'm loving it. Well, maybe I actually wish I did. Waiting for weekly episodes will be painful now.

Now on my to watch list: Berserk, Excel Saga.
Everything else I've either already watched or don't care for (well it's only Argento Soma that I don't care for).
Any other recommendations?

Excel Saga was a bit over the top for me, but then again I'm not too fond of random reference slapstick humor. I was going to give some recommendations from the 90s but then I realized those I've seen weren't that great and I rarely check the year of them being made. Onizuka and Slayers are must-watch classics although they're a bit dragged out. Golden Boy is actually better (and much shorter!) than Onizuka (which I assume you've seen anyway) so I guess I could recommend that one. And Slayers.
Some people might say Hunter x Hunter and maybe Words Worth too. Gundam 08th MS Team? There's a lot of Gundam in every age... Kenshin if you're really bored. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is quite good. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water is one of the best of the 90's.
Surprisingly few good anime tv series from 90's, even though there's a lot of good movies. 90's was the golden years of hentai however.

Bleh, usually on other forums or just in life in general most of what i write is generally well thought out etc.
But anime really doesnt count. When it comes to anime, i feel the freedom to bawl out the fact that my emotions just got ripped from my soul and wrenched before being shoved back into my skull. Of all things, this is the one thing where i rly dont care what ppl think about me anymore i guess haha
Bokura ga ita really killed me just now. Takeuchi is an epic fail! its not as "sad" as clannad or anything, but the emotions i felt during the anime were so strong because it just reminded me of the soulcrushing feeling of relationships which i thought i would never feel again

Because I think it's cute with manly men enjoying teenage moemoe~ and innocent first-love shows. I watch it too, but somewhere in me it feels very wrong...

Heh, one thing my sister told me about Japanese culture is that the girls like their guys feminine and their girls super feminine.
But aside from that, there are some first love books/movies for men in America. Take the Princess Bride for example.

meh, I guess the OVAs will have to do
so much older animes to watch: pre-2000 - Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Gundam Wing pre-1990 - Fist of the North Star, Rose of Versailles, Space Pirate Captain Harlock
though, there's a LOT of terrible anime that's out there pre-1990, so...

You can't spell "old school" without Gundam Wing.

More about pre-2000s, going off others' mentions:
Gundam is huge. Sorry that I didn't mention, I was brainstorming for names 10 minutes before proleague last night. Gundam Wing had some of the coolest gundams ever, but I also liked After War Gundam X... because the girl was cute and I love post-apocalyptic settings.
I couldn't get into Slayers at all, though I watched a couple dozen episodes with my friend. It's one of those animes I would enjoy more while watching or playing something else on the side. I also might've enjoyed it in middle school. My roommate recently began watching Legend of Galactic Heroes. He said he really enjoys the political intrigue and the grand space opera feel. I liked Kenshin a lot. I like period pieces a lot in general, especially if they involve swordmanship. I remember finding Golden Boy really entertaining when I saw it with a friend, but it didn't leave too much of a lasting impression. I can't find Nadia anywhere though I've always wanted to watch it. It's quite frustrating.
In terms of movies and OVAs, Akira is a definitive work that I found very striking. My roommate found it balls to the walls weird and creepy, but that's a worthless criticism. Grave of the Fireflies made me cry hard. My little sister was about the same age of the protagonist's sister when I watched it, so I related all too well. Several classic Studio Ghibli films came from this era... my favorite being Nausicaa, but I'm a sucker for environmental messages.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust had some of the sickest fight scenes ever.
The first Ghost in the Shell film also hails from this era.

That's why I get such a laugh every time I think back on my current signature quote.
I'm very guilty of it all too, and have stopped caring if it's right or wrong.

I don't get how one can feel wrong about something that strives to be pure, innocent, fun, and has a good message. You're not watching a hentai rape scene.
Rather than judging people for what they watch, just accept it and stop acting like a pompous condescending jackass. You did this in the Avatar thread as well, so it seems to be a running theme with your posting. There's a bit of pretentious elitism in this thread and it's pretty annoying, but most of it gets ignored.
As examples shows like Kimi Ni Todoke and Clannad After Story have high ratings and are generally heart warming shows. Clannad After Story is even the no.1 rated anime on myanimelist and was/may still be on anidb.net. If you're feeling wrong while watching these shows, the problem probably lies within you. Not the show or people who enjoy the simple beauty of it.

so what are you fellas looking up to for winter 09/10 season?
Dance in the vampire bund, and maybe hidden god, katanagatari and durarara!! Hanamaru yochien looks funny LOL. I'll try that one :D
|
Ones I'd like to see are: Omamori Himari - I'm a sucker. So-Ra-No-Wo-To - Looks nice. Nodame Cantabile Finale - I'd like to see this... but I haven't seen the other 2 seasons yet. Which is weird because they are high rated and have been recommended to me and I just haven't gotten around to it, despite it being right up my alley.
The others I don't really know about. I'll wait for people in here to sway my opinion on them like they did with Kimi Ni Todoke.

I rarely watch ongoing series because of the problem BrTarolg is suffering: the cursed weekly wait for the next episode. I find that wait utterly excruciating, and I often drop series because I lose interest during the wait. In fact I don't think I've ever finished an ongoing series by seeing it as it comes out.
I might see Katanagatari, but in all likelihood I will wait till it's finished to thoroughly watch it.

I'll try to chill down in the anime thread but it's way more than entertainment for me (PH?). The popularity of an anime tells me nothing about how good it actually is. I don't see why you are pulling Clannad numbers on a whim, was it because I said I disliked KyoAni? I've seen Clannad, Air and Kanon several times and I like them too. Being tsundere toward moeshit is pretentious elitism? Maybe...
And things like K-On! is pretty much tentacle rape but with a different approach.
