On a totally different note, does anyone else follow works based on favorite seiyuu? I found myself liking a few of them and investigated series that they also starred in. For instance I checked out Asura Cryin' because Nonaka Ai starred in it. ...though if that "reasoning" applies I should really see Clannad After Story.

If it has Kawasumi Ayako, Noto Mamiko or Sakamoto Maaya, I probably have at least watched one episode. The abomination known as Queen's Blade might be the sole exception. Some newer seiyuus are also pretty nice, but I have yet to start following any of them.

A bit new to the thread, but my girlfriend absolutely adores Anime, much like everyone else at my school. I've watched a couple of animes she's shown me, and I've read some of that Manga stuff, but I don't even know why it's appealing in the first place. It makes my girlfriend sort of sad because I don't like it, but it just makes me more confused. To tell you the truth, the only good Anime that I've ever watched would be Spirited Away, and that was because it had such an amazing plot and story behind it that I just had to rank it among one of my favorite animated movies of all time. But here comes the problem then. Animes that I see seem to be laid with a lot of things like filler and unimportant repetitive notions that just drive me up a wall. It's really frustrating to be in the middle of a series and then have like....3 episodes of nothing but shenanigans happen when the series isn't about shenanigans. And then comes to the part where I don't see any logical progression or thought-provoking scenes in Anime because themes are really repetitive and characters just seem to be archetypes or one-dimensional. I'm not saying it's as bad as Twilight, because Spirited Away had some really dynamic characters, but it seems to me that a lot of Anime seems to have this trait...which generally turns me off to it. ^ Granted, I never watched EVERY Anime, but from what I have watched and from what I've heard about certain Animes, it only makes it more apparent to me. So my only question would be, what are some REALLY good Animes and what's the difference between just watching some live action stuff as opposed to watching Anime? If you had something that was touching and heartwarming and thought provoking (thought provoking being the most important one), that'd sort of be the genre I'd go for. Granted....Anime girls are pretty cute....but I wouldn't put that as the reason why I'd watch Anime. I really got turned off to Anime because of fangirls and the ones that I initially watched, but I'd really be open to any Anime that would be on par with something like Spirited Away (I'm actually sort of hoping to see it again right now....so I think I will) EDIT: And my 100th post is used on an Anime thread on the TL forums....*sigh* If you like Spirited Away im pretty sure you'll love all the other Studio Ghibli movies they made like, Princess Mononoke, Tales from Earthsea, or even Howls Moving Castle just to name a few. But like other people said, theres alot of different type of anime.. it seems you just need to find the genre your into. Most of the people on this thread ive noticed are into the whole comedy/school life/harem/drama genre's. Which some are good and ive seen quite a few myself(but not really my style) and im sure your girlfriend are into these more then anything else as well. Tough luck >< One thing id say i like anime more then actual movies is the stories. There's alot of series out there with dark and deep meanings of life and the nature's of mankind that i beleive cannot be depicted nearly as well in a actual movie. Even the ones that look innocent at first tend to turn out quite crazy and blows your mind away. Oh btw you should watch, "Here and There, Now and Then" with your girlfriend. A bit older series but one of my favorites of all time, and im pretty positive you will enjoy it ![]() For those having trouble finding a good anime, I do recommend shows like Death Note, Code Geass, or Ghost in the Shell as a good start. I find those shows to be much better than those ever so popular harem, school life anime. Those are on a different level from most school life and harem anime. Those anime are popular because they're fun, easily digestible and very immediately entertaining. You don't hear anybody calling them real great series, though.

Beyond that, what's worth checking out in general? In order of recommendation level. Grouped in categories: Highly Recommended Kimi ni Todoke - Starts out a little slow, then it turns into THE best anime of the season. (Okay, a little biased here, but it's definitely recommended). Darker than Black - Like #1? You'll like #2. Seitokai no Ichizon - I hold that this anime could have been better, but it's definitely recommended anyway. Railgun - Obviously recommended. Recommended Letter Bee - Another consistently good anime. I would recommend it from this season. Maybe recommended Inuyasha - Watch if you liked the original. It doesn't leave you hanging (I hope). Asura Cryin' 2 - Not much of an improvement on the first, but might be worth checking out if you watched the first one. Blue Literature - A little inconsistent from episode to episode, and I'm betting that they cut down on the source material a lot, but worth checking out. Ecchi/Fanservice/Harem Nyan Koi - If you're into Harem, do check this one out. It is rather cliche, but it's consistent. Kampfer - Fanservice. Skip otherwise. Heaven's Lost Property - For the ecchi fanservice guys... Skip 11eyes - Below average. Kobato - Very, very slow. It's slower than Air for God's sake. Read the manga instead. Pending judgment Armed Librarians - I originally would not have recommended this, but it's suddenly gotten decent. I'd say wait until the entire series finishes before checking this one out. I just finished watching Kanon 2006 and I wanted to commentate it a bit. Are the writers of that anime completely sadistic or what? I cried like a fucking 10 year old girl a dozen time! I've watched about 10 animes before, but none of them have been even that close to make me feel something about the characters. The twists were, most of the time, mind-blowing. The characters were incredibly well-developed and I liked them all. Nothing annoyed me in that anime, unlike most animes. The beginning felt a bit boring, but it was totally worth it in the end. I'm really really happy to have watched this anime. If you didn't watch it yet, go watch it. Now. Clannad. Wrong. Clannad After Story. And if you think either of THOSE are bad, try Grave of the Fireflies. Most heart wrenching thing I've ever seen. Such a beautiful yet tragic movie. <3

it's like they said "how can we trick people into thinking this isn't a generic harem with a stupid gimmick?" "oh lets put in a FELINE CURSE that turns the lead into a cat, but get this he's also allergic to cats" "brilliant"

That, and Suou was a bit generic for some - I REALLY wish they spent more time on character and plot-development; the length of the season made it just tragically muddled... even another 1-2 episodes would have been enough time to flesh certain things out, but... At any rate, it was an enjoyable watch, though I smell a money-making scheme in the OVAs.
