If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. so many VN so much time yeaaaa winter sessions best sessions. Well, I mean....there's not a lot of anime this season that's worth talking about..... No one really talks about Chihayafuru or Kimi to Boku. Ika Musume is just Ika Musume, and so is Working. Mirai Nikki kind of lost the steam of discussion after everyone was sick of waiting for episodes and just read the manga and there was no point being excited over the plot anymore. I'm pretty sure I'm one of the few still watching Tamayura~hitotose....even though I probably shouldn't watch it anymore. I might also be one of the few people here watching Phi Brain this season....and I don't know why I'm watching that either. There aren't THAT many people talking about Guilty Crown as most people either regard as just decent without that many surprises or as something that just didn't live up to the hype. Horizon is confusing for some people and not confusing for others....and the people who aren't confused have either read the light novels or no longer post enough around ADT (wala) to really start a discussion about it. So what you have left is Ben-to....which people only talk about because of its aggressively fan service style that gets everyone all hot and turned on by the girls. I mean, you could always talk about recommendations like we did a page ago about animes to give to someone...but those are just spur of the moments followed by School Days followed by people who hate the School Days recommendations followed by Blasty VN pics. So I guess what I'm trying to say..... Is that the VN discussions are all blasty's fault.
I think you're exactly spot on haha.
I dont bother to post about Ika Musume, cause not much to say other than thats its awesome. GC talk isnt that great, I mean GC 10 kinda just left me lost and confused, again I felt that they just decided to switch to high gear on the plot, and I wasnt expecting it. Chihayafuru, I post what I feel about that anime, I think thats the only anime I ever put effort into about my posts. Ben-to is just well, you couldnt have said it better urself, it just gets me all hot and bothered.
Recommendations > School Days > School Days hate > Blasty VN pics. Lol, couldnt agree more.
Im mostly looking forward to the Amagami discussions when Winter Season starts, also Nisemonogatari as well.
PS: Thanks for the birthday wishes lol, even though my b-day isnt till tomorrow (I guess TL is on EU time). Still I appreciate it, you guys are too kind. <3

I'd say the real factor for the waning of discussions is IRC to be honest. Most of us just say our thoughts as we watch something on IRC.

And how much time are we talking about? I know they're pretty huge time sinks but what's a good estimate of how long the average VN takes?

A bit shorter than the full length of Clannad, If we talk about EX then a bit longer than the full length of Clannad

The time spent on a VN depends entirely on the length of said VN, lol. Just look each individual VN up on vndb if you want to see an estimated reading time.

I think Little Busters could make a good first VN. Like it's probably a good idea to not do Clannad if you've already watched Clannad, if only because you'll end up wasting a lot of time seeing a lot of the same scenes from the anime over and over again. I mean ultimately there are a few times where it's worth it....but I think LB can make a good first try.
Uhhh.....Fate Stay/Night and Tsukihime are often recommendations for people starting out...at least that's what people told me to read....

It depends on your tastes really. I was thinking of writing a "my life of VNs" blog as like an intro for people who just think of them as weird porn, but yeah.
For instance, Little Busters is absolutely legendary amongst people who've read VNs. But it's legendary because of the way it ties together in the end. The five girls' routes that you have to clear up before you can unlock the true story are, in my opinion, below average at best. In that sense I could sell it to someone based on how it'll leave them absolutely amazed at the end, but we're also looking at 10-20 hours that would result in them tearing their hair out at how stupid it is.
If you look mind=empty stuff (like, hmm, Bento) then some of the older Navel games are a good entry. Shuffle, for instance, is a pretty prototypical romcom harem.
If you want the darker, more serious sides of things Kara no Shoujo got released in English a few months back, but beware because KnS is like a full-blown murder mystery novel.
In the end I think your options are limited because of what's actually in English. Planetarian (very short, like 2-3 hours) would be my first recommendation to get a gist of how these things are, followed by Ever 17 (~20 hours). Those two are my go-to recommendations for English-translated VNs, as they're both very solid from start to finish.
As for time, I'd say the average reading length of a VN is approximately 15-20 hours. Key's stuff (Clannad, Little Busters, etc.) are notorious for being longer. Their most recent work, Rewrite, took me approximately 40-50.

My very first VN was Sharin no Kuni. I actually read it because of that one funny pic of Sachi proposing that they grind all night or something. I came in with no expectations and came away very impressed.
Whatever you pick for your first VN, have fun with it! I tend to enjoy them more than anime, and they generally make me feel more invested and immersed in the story.

my first was hanachirasu somthing about the description I liked. I'm debating giving planetarium or fate stay/nights a try. from my post on it. Main character was kind of annoying, probably related to this. Akane such a narcissistic bastard.
also finished hachirasu a bit ago , perhaps not the best vn to start with given the lack of choice, ah well, the endings roughly maybe not spoiler worthy. + Show Spoiler + do nothing see main ending, walk into sunset, couple ways to rush to your death.
more random nonsense I found amusing, while reading it. I'm sure there's more didn't end up saving. random quotes and thoughts on it. + Show Spoiler +unwilling to recognize as a member of the same sex
while others still were searching for a place to die.
Igarasu fear of kettles, main "villian" is scared of kettles.
"I'm not gloomy" Igarasu mutters dejectedly to himself once he's all alone.
an old acquantance is there.
too much music not enough rain
Akane grins what kind of solicitor takes no for an answer.
done I'll pay you a hundred ten if you let me kill you.
its not a god damn trampoline
Akane did that for a month wtf, doesn't seen like something he would do. (might just been mess up in translation?, where he was at start of the tale)
Akane such a narcissistic bastard.
he has essentially surrendered go-no-sen to a pistol.
and so the mad blacksmith, mujiwara itsurin Misuaki ., passed out of Tokyo and out of this tale.
and the ending, feels very stereotypical samurai ending sort of, also everybody dies pretty much.
any vn with a somewhat similar setting. and happy birthday Emnjay808.

Corona + Show Spoiler +This time loop thing is killing me....I don't get it how do they time travel in the first place? I know Tokino has time related powers but... It's Tokou that's been doing the time travel right?

My first VN was Fate/Stay Night, and then a while later Tsukihime, then Ever17. Honestly I haven't read alot of VNs at all. On top of those 3, I've read MuvLuv (so thats like 3 in all), first 3 chapters of Umineko, and Sharin. IDK if Daibanchou counts as a VN but I've beaten it too. But on the plus side, even though I haven't read alot, I've enjoyed most of what I did read.
