Second is fine, but it doesn't really stand out from other magical girl series.
Third is a combination of the first two for me.

anyone want to recommend some older stuff to me that I could watch? something with action, serious but not emo, and believable characters/plot alternatively, something completely over the top and ridiculous would also work

This show is SOOO campy and cheesy and horrible and has EVERY fucking magical girl stereotype imaginable...but like it's still really entertaining. Even in the dumbest moments, I find myself smiling. It somehow manages that. I dunno. What other magical girl series would you recommend? I've only seen what...AMG (manga too), CCS and my-hime/my-otome. It's a cute genre, lol.

![]() If you could read Japanese, PH, I'd recommend something by bakemonogatari's author (yeah, he wrote something in the genre). Unfortunately it probably would never get animated. Katanagatari definitely looks good, crescentia, I don't know what you are complaining about. How much of it is my huge bias I don't know~

anyone want to recommend some older stuff to me that I could watch? something with action, serious but not emo, and believable characters/plot What have you seen/liked? In general, MAL is the best tool I've found for choosing new series to watch I don't like the third so far, but I'm only a couple eps in. I didn't like it at all. SO MANY USELESS CHARACTERS. But really, Nanoha is just otakubait. Although I did like the second season, it's as if the producers said to the viewers "if you want to get the full value out of the show, you'd better be writing your own fanfics". So much of why people like that show is based on the towering amout of fan made material to go with it, while the show itself is, well, pretty meh. My own opinion.

I loved higurashi when it came out, especially my first four episode experience at 4AM

![]() As for Umineko, having played the game as well...meh. I really can't help but feel like they didn't do a good enough job with this change of media. Even if they have to make a 24 episode deadline (Which they don't), why cut the action stuff? Even from the view of the purpose of the game between Beato and Battler itself, it makes sense to be flashy and drawn out with those parts. In comparison, Angel + Maria's flashbacks are nice character development, but ultimately as irrelevant to problemsolving as action scenes, if not more so. Yet those are the ones given air time. It doesn't make sense to imitate the original work in pacing and allocation of time, since the amount of information contained in the said time slot is completely different...meh, what are they thinking. In comparison to Higurashi, I'd have to say that the anime for Higurashi grabs your attention much better. If I didn't read Umineko, I wouldn't have cared to watch it after the first few episodes. crescentia, DtB + Show Spoiler + I'd cry if Yin is the new Amber, especially since I really liked Amber's character in season one Since you watched Kurenai, try out denpateki no kanojo. Same author, same world, much more awesome characters. I liked the latter infinitely more in terms of the light novels.

It's not that they're bad... It's just.. Well for DtB, I can see where the trend is going with that. Need a better subplot ![]() Well both shows are kind of static at the moment, and Kimi no Todoke isn't. K that's what I wanted to say ^_^

Gokai, what do you mean? School day is just a normal anime, nothing special about it, nothing at all.
