If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Lol don't get me started on the first season of Nanoha...
Second is fine, but it doesn't really stand out from other magical girl series.
Third is a combination of the first two for me.

ugh, all of the winter 2009 animes look like trash

anyone want to recommend some older stuff to me that I could watch? something with action, serious but not emo, and believable characters/plot

alternatively, something completely over the top and ridiculous would also work

I don't like the third so far, but I'm only a couple eps in.

Like...I dunno. This show is SOOO campy and cheesy and horrible and has EVERY fucking magical girl stereotype imaginable...but like it's still really entertaining. Even in the dumbest moments, I find myself smiling. It somehow manages that. I dunno.

What other magical girl series would you recommend? I've only seen what...AMG (manga too), CCS and my-hime/my-otome. It's a cute genre, lol.

Dumping Kyou, Kona? Trying to get death flags much?

If you could read Japanese, PH, I'd recommend something by bakemonogatari's author (yeah, he wrote something in the genre). Unfortunately it probably would never get animated.

Katanagatari definitely looks good, crescentia, I don't know what you are complaining about. How much of it is my huge bias I don't know~

What have you seen/liked?

In general, MAL is the best tool I've found for choosing new series to watch

I didn't like it at all. SO MANY USELESS CHARACTERS.

But really, Nanoha is just otakubait. Although I did like the second season, it's as if the producers said to the viewers "if you want to get the full value out of the show, you'd better be writing your own fanfics". So much of why people like that show is based on the towering amout of fan made material to go with it, while the show itself is, well, pretty meh.

My own opinion.

yin is the new amber, duh

as for what I've watched... recently watched higashi no eden, and found that pretty cool thematically, but a bit convoluted with the sudden introduction of the NEETs; feel like they could've spent another good couple of episodes fleshing out their ideas instead of mashing it together for the money

rewatched kurenai - that was a pretty good show, about the same line of character believability and action (maaaaybe a bit more); rewatched code geass R2, which was clearly a bit ridiculous but I knew that going in instead of WTFing at the show

I've been watching tsubasa chronicle but it sort of reminds me of the pokemon-style "go to the next town and get the badge" kind of thing

I haven't watched umineko yet - is that as good as higurashi? I loved higurashi when it came out, especially my first four episode experience at 4AM

Eh, I personally hated Umineko at the start, though I am still following it so it's not too horrible. For the most part it's a very different show from Higurashi; it's not Higurashi 3. It's also fucking weird, so your mileage may vary. I'd give it a shot, but don't expect the first part to capture your interest as much as Higurashi did.
Nothing witty here atm

I, unfortunately, cannot read Japanese. ):

Then hit your knees and pray for anime + subs for you sir! That series is the next on my reading list...well, rather, the author's works make up the rest of my reading list practically

As for Umineko, having played the game as well...meh. I really can't help but feel like they didn't do a good enough job with this change of media. Even if they have to make a 24 episode deadline (Which they don't), why cut the action stuff? Even from the view of the purpose of the game between Beato and Battler itself, it makes sense to be flashy and drawn out with those parts. In comparison, Angel + Maria's flashbacks are nice character development, but ultimately as irrelevant to problemsolving as action scenes, if not more so. Yet those are the ones given air time. It doesn't make sense to imitate the original work in pacing and allocation of time, since the amount of information contained in the said time slot is completely different...meh, what are they thinking. In comparison to Higurashi, I'd have to say that the anime for Higurashi grabs your attention much better. If I didn't read Umineko, I wouldn't have cared to watch it after the first few episodes.

crescentia, DtB + Show Spoiler +
I'd cry if Yin is the new Amber, especially since I really liked Amber's character in season one

Since you watched Kurenai, try out denpateki no kanojo. Same author, same world, much more awesome characters. I liked the latter infinitely more in terms of the light novels.

I would suggest avoiding the genre all together
Although I suppose Princess Tutu would be one to consider. Worst name conceivable, fairly good show.

Haven't watched the new episode, but I agree entirely with that.

Show's only half as good as it can be without Yin.

I suddenly found myself drifting towards Kimi no Todoke and away from everything else, even Darker than Black and Railgun :X

It's not that they're bad... It's just.. Well for DtB, I can see where the trend is going with that. Need a better subplot

Well both shows are kind of static at the moment, and Kimi no Todoke isn't. K that's what I wanted to say ^_^

Rozen Maiden is...well, rather odd, to be honest I don't really understand what the hell it is about. It'd be nice if I was right and the show is all about enjoy Shinku and Suigintou being awesome, except I am probably wrong about that.

Gokai, what do you mean? School day is just a normal anime, nothing special about it, nothing at all.
