To them, visual novels are just "anime porn games those neets play." I mean if you say you play ADV/AVG games to them, they'd think of games like Professor Layton. Outside of super popular titles like Steins;Gate, which sold 300k copies, visual novels are extremely niche and most sell under 10k copies. Just compare it to something like video games, most people know what they are, but they don't really know any particulars or what type of games they are called.
