If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

I just started taking japanese language courses this month. We had this event where you can talk with japanese exchange students, and when I said 'visual novel' they had no idea what I was talking about. So I was wondering what do japanese people call VN's? Do they just call them 'galge', but doesn't that just mean dating games?

I think AVG is the more formal name for it.

Most normal Japanese people generally don't know anything about anime otaku culture. To them, visual novels are just "anime porn games those neets play." I mean if you say you play ADV/AVG games to them, they'd think of games like Professor Layton. Outside of super popular titles like Steins;Gate, which sold 300k copies, visual novels are extremely niche and most sell under 10k copies.

Just compare it to something like video games, most people know what they are, but they don't really know any particulars or what type of games they are called.

Yes, just look at the games under the No Sexual Content tag on vndb. [S]RPG = [Strategy] Role Play Game, meaning that they are mostly RPG or SRPGs.

Oh, ok. SRPGs sound interesting. Are they like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars and the Battle for Wesnoth?

Wow, these games are huge. 2.5 GB!? Anyways, now its time for me to find a cop...

Would a computer with these specs be able to run a VN?

Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP 3
Dell INSPIRION 600M
Intel (R) Pentium (R) M
Processor 1.50 GHz
512 MB of RAM
Mobility Radeon 9000, 32.0 MB

or rather, what do you need to play VNs?

dont see why it shouldnt, even animated ones like school days etc can run with lower specs than that.

For example, this is the requirements for Summer Days.

Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows 98 or higher
Intel Pentium 4 at 1GHz
256MB RAM
64MB VRAM
5.92GB HDD space
Microsoft DirectX 9.0
PCM audio
DVD-ROM drive[5]

Oh yea you don't pass the VRAM requirements LOL. Anyway I think it should run anyway. It's not the RAM that's important usually. And why is your computer that bad anyway. My smartphone is like two times faster than that one.

VNs are mostly sprites with text, maybe a few videos. I don't think they're all that system-demanding, but with 32MB video memory I'm not so sure.
Unless you're playing the ones that have "actual gameplay" (non-novel parts).
