Ignorance is bliss. =/ Really though, if you're going to watch it for the backstory (or afterstory, as it were), you might as well play the VN. The anime only covers the Fate route (1 of 3 routes in the VN), so you miss out on details such as Sakura's backstory. In addition, Fate is more or less an introduction to the universe, so they do a lot less philosophizing compared to the other routes. And since one of the better things about Fate/Zero was the indirect comparison between Kiritsugu and Shirou's ideologies, you are basically gutting the entire work since the Fate route is fairly bad at describing the consequences of Shirou's beliefs. tl;dr read the vn if you're gonna bother with the anime.

As it turns out, pretty bad. In those five minutes, we got:
The faces of the Shinki also pissed me off for some reason, but I'll write that off as a personal gripe. At least the animation is decent. Maybe I'll give it another episode or two since it's only 5 minute eps. I guess I wasn't really expecting much to begin with though. =/ + Show Spoiler [Milky Holmes OVA] + ![]() On September 08 2011 16:31 laauu wrote: Not really... First, F/Z has 100% less moralfag since it lacks Shirou. Second, the theme is entirely different from that of the Fate route/FSN anime. i do not think you HAVE to watch FSN to understand F/Z. The overall plot is pretty straightforward. it feels like it is going to be the same anime but different characters... [edit]: having said that just watch FSN if you like F/Z

F/SN and F/Z were written by different people for different purposes. F/Z is a prequel to F/SN (primarily its canon HF arc, which has not been animated), but is extremely standalone as it deals with almost an entirely different cast, in a different situation, for different individual goals. You do not need to read F/SN at all, unless F/Z decides to skip the explanation about the Grail War (at which point you can really just read a wiki entry about it for the background). The only real connection between the two is that if you've read F/SN, you know for the most part how F/Z turns out, which certainly adds its own flavor but isn't something that's absolutely necessary.

But I meant more that one of the major themes in F/SN is the struggle about justice and righteousness, as the arcs each deal with "dreaming of being a savior" "saving everyone" and "saving only one." F/Z doesn't have that sort of moral pondering, is what's generally being pointed at.
