If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Has there been anything on the level of Death Note or Code Geass in the last few years?

Or anime that someone like me should've already watched? I'm open to any genre.

I'll list what I've already seen below:

+ Show Spoiler +
(Watching as it airs) Steins;Gate
Kimi Ga Nozumo Eien
Clannad/After Story
Elfen Lied
Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu
Highschool of the Dead
Bakemonogatari
Arakawa Under the Bridge (Never finished it)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Kanon (3 eps in)

IIRC this is all I have seen.

If it's a stupid question, ignore my noobiness.

You should probably watch whats current. Like steins;gate. You should definitely check out Madoka. Then watch something you like, chances are that one of us has watched it, and would probably be glad to discuss it.

Going back to the discussion of "badass" animes, do any of them also have a night theme like Darker than Black? That was one thing that made me really love that series...

Call me crazy but I didn't think either of the Code Geasses were very great (opinion obviously don't crucify me for it)

But in regards to what you're asking, madoka magica was short but it was pretty sick. I also found Baccano! to be great (and has the greatest OP for a long time imo); it is a little different from the others as it doesn't have a whole lot of drama, but awesome nonetheless.

Then FMA:B was awesome too, but it also doesn't have as much drama as Death Note/Code Geass/Madoka

Die heretic!!!! jk CG is awesome.

And no, nothing has been on the level of DN or CG where the first season was definitely better then the second season because they either milked the anime or switched plots/directors/authors(I still like both seasons of CG though-fav anime). However, if you want to see a decent anime that is the best of its year, go watch Steins; Gate, Puella Magi Madoka Magika, Clannad, or something like that. For a list of anime to check out, just look at the image up top. For specific genres, ask here.

Miki Sayaka, n_n (sorry for the spam, she's one of my most favorite characters, and I'm bored):

Don't watch School Days until you know FOR SURE that you like anime. School Days is a make or break anime that will either make you drop anime or keep on going.

I thought Code Geass was alright, wouldn't say it was the same as Death Note, maybe just because I liked that approach to 'psychological thriller' so much

code geass is ok.
season 1 was good but then it got degraded fast.
don't have much love with the new clamp character designs too. (the series was popular in yaoi just like 00)

I just can't like the newer gundams including 00 and code geass at all, they are too "teenage" for me.

Much darker themed anime like rahxephon is way better. Much less "moe" kind of character design.

madoka magica is pretty good, I am surprised at how good it was as I wasn't gonna watch it until my gf forced me to.
mushishi and casshen sins are also really entertaining.
