There are just some things that I really don't get (which I attribute to my not paying attention for the first two episodes...but I don't want to rewatch them), i.e.+ Show Spoiler +
John Titor appearing in the story and then disappearing from reality and then seemingly coming back...as well as the insofar unexplained lapses of memory...wtf lol I don't want anything spoiled, though, so I will just keep watching.
If you are confused 3 eps in, you are in for one hell of a ride but the show is sooo awesome :D
I mean, I love this techno-thriller stuff + the theoretical physics-esque stuff (obviously it's not going to be 100% accurate and whatnot--it's a freaking show, but I really like that stuff; both in terms of topic matter and anime genre)...why does it not make sense to me...?
Fuck, maybe I'm just stupid...
/quits S;G
noo it is so f*ing good! consider rewatching the first 2 ... seriously it gets better and better and I don't think it's that confusing as long as you're paying attention that is
but why does it switch back and forth?! the murder/crash/people disappearing=single unexplained incident is fine, but then the John Titor bullcrap happens in which everyone denies knowledge of him, and then for some reason everyone knows him again? the hell?
not only that, the fanservice makes me feel dirty just watching it (thank GOODNESS for headphones nyan nyan nyan nyan RAGEEEE) and WTF a trap?! okay whatever I suppose it's just comic relief and whatnot....and then kurisu makise RANDOMLY decides to join them for no apparent reason...and the "supa hacka" hacks into CERN....
whatever--it's suspension of disbelief and it seems to have the potential to turn into one of my all-time faves since, as I mentioned before, I love both the genre and the specific material and even *some* of the characters......but I feel like a retard because I don't get what has happened in the first three episodes fml
and what the hell is a gel banana and how do they randomly have that microwave?! the fuck is up with that? moreover the main character pisses me off (always a terrible sign for me) because he's just really annoying........obviously it's comic relief, but he just comes across as a jackass tbh
I think it's just sour grapes from me not understanding the plot...but damn, I'm pissed because I really truly like it but just don't really get going on, and as a die-hard perfectionist, nothing feels as bad as lacking understanding of the plot....of course I have to deal with unexplained stuff, but this just seems like a) a gaping plot hole--which I highly doubt or b) I'm retarded--which I don't -_-;
dammit I'm stupid and pissed. that can't be a good combination
*end nonsensical rant -________-;*
Keep going for a few more episodes to see if you can start to figure out what's going on. I didn't really understand anything first couple episodes but if you pay attention, almost everything gets explained to some degree. Granted, there are some things that just happen for the sake of the plot like Daru being a genius hacker and them somehow having a magical microwave but you just have to accept it the same way we accept any other ridiculous anime setting, or any sci-fi for that matter. Also Kurisu (who is the best character of the show) joins because of curiosity. She's a scientist, so by nature, she's interested in unknown possibilities. Not that random.
I'd say it's actually a good thing you have so many questions about what's going on already because when they do explain it, you'll actually make some connection instead of passing it off as an unimportant statement, only to be REALLY confused later on.
On July 26 2011 05:52 Ecael wrote: The John Titor thing is actually simpler than that, keep in mind on the dates. The other unexplained events that you have listed are impossible for you to understand right now and simply serves as something to keep the reader/audience engaged.
The fan service isn't really fan service, at the very least, nothing that I'd consider as fan service. Makise Kurisu was interested because of the way Okabe acted -> presented w/ gel banana. You should notice how she immediately tried to taste it and noted how there was no taste, so something not microwaving is at work here.
In terms of what Daru can do, it is part suspension of disbelief, part them leading you on. Keep in mind the ping that Daru is getting from France (I forgot whether he did this early on, but you'll get there)
No one else gets what's happening in the first 3 episodes, so you aren't alone. I have to say though, a lot of people just get pissed at the 'plot holes' of the early episodes rather get intrigued and further the suspension of disbelief, not sure why the difference.
Figure out what the gel banana is yourself, the time when you see Kurisu barging into the lab basically tells you what the microwave is.
Again no one is suppose to understand the plot at this point. People omit information on purpose to keep the plot going - the characters are as much in the dark as you. So honestly, I don't know what your complaint is about lol.
Sorry for making you pound out a small fence of text heh.
I guess most of it can be delayed for the time being because of suspension of disbelief and/or the earliness of the series as far as I'm concerned. The very first thought that came to me after the first episode was that this will likely be my favorite series of all time, hands down, so I was also sort of depressed that I didn't seem to be following along very well.
...I think it's just mostly because I'm way too stressed out at the moment; entirely my fault. I just sort of panicked when onlinerobbe told me that I was in for a ride if I thought the first few episodes were confusing. I was watching the anime on one monitor and touch-typing my paper on a different monitor in a futile attempt to improve my terrible multitasking (long story short I'm a perfectionist who focuses exceptionally well on one thing but cannot do more than one thing at once and/or cannot do many tasks one at a time because I don't know where to start), but I really don't want to go back and rewatch lol. I'll just try to build as I go.
Definitely will continue watching~
Mostly I think it's because of my attention-splitting. I always focus on single things when I work (i.e. single-tasking), especially watching anime/movies--S;G seems also like a series that is definitely worth watching without distractions, so there we go. : P

Pretty much, which is pretty much the case with everything else with first person narration really. Okabe is pretty much as confused as the audience is.
All right, all right, I explained it somewhere in my great wall of text...
1) Very stressed out 2) Unfocused 3) [consequently] impatient 4) S;G worth paying attention 5) S;G seemed really good and I wanted to like it but had no idea why I didn't seem to get it
I remember I began reading Gantz with the "optimal" mindset in which I devoured it in a day because I really wanted to figure out what was happening...this case was just a perfect storm of suck. I will stop annoying you guys now...
It wasn't just you though, at the beginning of this season, a lot of people were all going "wtf is this s;g business why so many plot holes", I am pretty curious as to why they think that way.
I suppose omission of information isn't really going to get anyone interested if the worldview and characters didn't grab them, but in the cases where it did people were still getting frustrated. A rather curious sentiment considering how many other works of various kinds work like that.

Hm, I didn't know that.
That's odd...I personally really wouldn't be annoyed if I were not so tired. I just ate up Gantz literally because I had no idea as to what it was about and I was looking forward to each chapter with the hope that it would elucidate matters...I managed to fit in the first 3 episodes of S;G in my time and normally would be hungry for more, but I guess I sort of cracked this time because my mental state was already quite high-strung. Otherwise I don't think I would have been very frustrated.
Maybe all of them were similarly stressed out? lol

Don't worry, because you started late, you have the option of marathoning a lot of the episodes people had to wait a week for, which sort of fills the plot holes easier. It was same with me, I started when it was 12-13ep in, and I did not understand the first few ep, but it got me hooked. After some of the revelations in the later episodes, it made me rewatch and notice the subtle details/hints they added in the first few.
It is definitely a series that needs your 100% undivided attention I feel, or else you're going to be going, wtf is this shit? how the fuck did this just happen etc etc.
Def, one of the best, if not THE best this spring/summer season.
Yeah the first episode confused the fuck out of me but then I marathoned like 14 episodes and now it makes much more sense =p I wish they'd have less random "otaku" humor though but it doesn't really matter.

Sounds like a traditional (perhaps modified electrically) instrument from China or Japan. I remember hearing something similar in a RoTK game years ago.

Sounds like possibly an erhu, not exactly sure though >.>

the gel banana thing and all that is explained later that's actually the point where it get's really interesting, okarin actually changes drastically IMO.
the thing about things changing will be explained more and more; there's one point where he's browsing the web for forum posts (or posts at @channel) from john titor, it's explained pretty good I think. D-mail is all I'll say here if you're only at ep3 ^.^ +don't rage over the divergence meter 1% thing, that will come later as well

I just find random places with Google, but I usually use watchanimeon...not sure whether there are "better" ways. Thanks! :D
You serious? I was the same as you, but after your download your first anime, you will never look back. The quality is just worlds apart.
