Well theres Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica, it's disguised as a Magical Girl anime but don't be completely put off by that.
Elfen Lied is an old classic, fairly heavy on gore at times though iirc, been a while since I saw it.
Ghost in the Shell tv serie is awesome, if it counts.
The new Neon Genesis Evangelion movies are also amazing, been years since I saw the original TV serie.
Really enjoyed Kaiji as well, not really psychological though but rather a thriller but falls in the same area in my head.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn't Mecha.
That picture is infuriating because its LoGH characters done in Code Geass style. If LoGH was remade with Clamp designs (see that picture), people would watch it and call it a Code Geass ripoff. When in fact, LoGH is better than Geass in almost every way, other than lacking mechs.
