Yeah that's kind of what I was getting at. One Piece has changed drastically since Marineford. If Whitebeard attacked now, battles would be a bunch of over-the-top black lightning clashes and DBZ style particle effects. The iconic Akainu punch through Ace's chest would have been a black fist that was shooting out Haki energy.
All this talk really makes me miss the old manga. I realize that shonen authors have to up the stakes to keep readers engaged, but I would have honestly preferred if Haki stayed invisible and characters like Garp couldn't do crazy shit like Kamehameha blasts with Haki that destroy entire cities.

did you guys not see the latest chapter before you made your posts? seems pretty obvious what happened to law.
im more curious who this new character mention is and why blackbeards ship is approaching egghead if neither aokiji or blackbeard are on it.
the most obvious answer for the man marked by flames imo is dragon, but im not sure theres enough evidence for that. for starters i dont recall dragon having a completely black ship.
also turns out this wasnt the first time the "man marked by flames" was mentioned. the last time was almost 30 chapters ago but it was a literal name drop only.

Things aren't looking good for Garp here. Aokiji is more than a match for him. Couple that with the rest of the Blackbeard crew and I think this will turn out to be Garp's Marineford moment. I can see Shiryu turning invisible and stabbing him in the back to leave an opening for Aokiji to throw the knock out punch.

good number of people thought it could be Saul having burn scars from ohara but he got frozen before the island got razed so idk how he would have been burned

yeah i did think the other strong candidate would be saul because elbaf is considered to be a strong possibility for the last location of a red poneglyph.

He got bodied by a stronger captain with a better crew.
Im still on the team of "man marked by flames" = Saul. Dragon is too silly. People would just say Dragon. Saul has an alias because he's supposed to be dead.

Possibly. I like the idea of Garp losing in an underhanded way like a 2v1 where he's stabbed in the back by an invisible Shiryu. That is legit the first good idea for making him lose I've read. Otherwise I disagree that Aokiji has demonstrated he's a match. The only way it seems he (or basically any Marine) can be on Garp's level is by holding hostages with his freeze fruit.
Will Garp win? No one knows. Oda is weird. Based on what we've seen? Garp should stomp.

at the moment theres really no link to saul and ability to create whirlpools. also if saul has been hiding on elbaf its not really consistent with him floating around the ocean on a black ship for long enough for him to have stories told about.
its clear that blackbeard had heard of this man a while ago, and if dragon is a possible candidate then it would make sense why blackbeard attacked baltigo. the same could be said for how kidd ended up at elbaf, being the other character shown to have knowledge of this rumour, he showed up at an island that could be thought to have a likely candidate.
the fact that in the end neither of these trips led to anything makes me think that maybe theres some random character thats going to get called back from like 1000 chapters ago. id be very surprised if a completely new character was introduced though. or perhaps its something more lame like dragon managed to conceal and relocate the poneglyph despite baltigo being attacked.

I am much less hype about this chapter than most people. Buggy is not very interesting to me. The only way he will ever be interesting to me is if he stumbles into being part of a lore dump.

It seems that Kuzan isn't part of Sword after all. Don't all the members in that group know each other?
Aokiji flipping to a heel would be cool but I just don't see it happening in a manga like One Piece.
