Also, Shanks=Mary-Sue is a dumb comparison. If Luffy was Shanks, sure. The reality is Shanks has always been a goal of the main cast, similar to Mihawk. Has Mihawk ever fucked up? Why not complain about Mihawk? BECAUSE THAT'S THE POINT. We didn't see their growth, just like we didn't see the growth of Vader and Palpatine in the OG Trilogy, yet accepted they were strong. That is a different story. Judging by how mediocre the SW prequels are, you prolly dont want to see that story. Shanks isn't an exact Vader analog, he's more neutral, but still, his power precedes the story. The evidence we have is he was Katakuri level 9 years ago. Reminder, Luffy wasn't even Katakuri level 9 months ago. Shank's growth rate pre-meeting luffy would situate him as able to destroy the Red Line with a sneeze by now, because that is what Luffy's trajectory would be if it continued at the current pace, discounted by 40% ( I think I got this approximation correct). In other words. Shanks is actually nerfed. He should be able to haki explode the brains of everyone he doesn't like in the world, if he was a Mary Sue, or merely a Luffy. | ||

 It's a bit tough to paint nuanced portraits of a character in a manga that has a thousand characters. Besides, wouldn't it count as Shanks fucking up since he wasn't able to stop Blackbeard despite being a Yonkou? Add in the failure to convince Whitebeard to do something about Ace before he got himself stomped as well. I find it a bit foolish to judge overall quality of characters that have barely had any real exposure in a story that is still years away from completion. | ||

He doesn't have noticeably dark skin (in the manga), he doesn't have black wings and his hair isn't white (even in Oda's illustration of him as a child). Those are supposed to be the characteristic traits of the Lunarians. Bonney also has none of these traits but maybe she's adopted. | ||
