This arc is starting to grow on me. A lot of concerns about who could be the villain this arc, how Oda would handle main plot progression, and the whole technological upheaval of the One Piece world are starting to come together. The Seraphim are more interesting now because they allow for some unique matchups by proxy like Zoro vs. Mihawk, or even rematches for Luffy and crew with Buggy, Crocodile, Moria, Doflamingo, and Blackbeard. I actually wonder if the government has access to more pirate DNA than just the Shichibukai. Kaido was a prisoner for some time, does that mean they can make a Kaido seraph? Is any pirate that was imprisoned at some point fair game for a Seraph clone? Gold Roger?!
Also, the idea that Vegapunk is just recovering ancient technology from the past and making it work again is so much more appealing to me than him outright inventing everything. I'm still not a fan of turning One Piece into Astro Boy but tying everything back to the Ancient Kingdom makes the massive changes to the One Piece world that much more palatable. It also makes sense why the WG is after Vegapunk. Imu is clearly some ancient figure from the past and while Vegapunk has proven useful, perhaps he sees him as a threat? If he can recover Ancient Kingdom technology, then he can perhaps develop a weapon to rival Uranus or whatever that thing was that destroyed Lulusia.
Also, for some reason Shaka really reminds me of Imu. They look really similar to me. Does anyone else get the same impression?

Agreed, I really don't know where this arc is going and I love it. Wano was very straightforward with a big bad dragon that needed to be defeated, this subterfuge and number of unknowns is such a breath of fresh air.

1066 was pinnacle One piece. Like a 9/10 chapter for me
The flashback to Ohara is a bit of a retcon but not in an annoying way (its not like Robin could've known how and where those books ended up)
Vegapunk, the world's biggest brain -- made me remember pinky and the brain.
Dragon just became even cooler than before. I agree with his line about >>it<< being too much!!!
The 6 moons of Vegapunk -- are they 100% independent beings? Or do they exist like zergs, with an overlord and shared consciousness?

I think its almost confirmed now that this island is going to be short, because there's meat on Elbaf. Either Lucci and co get there early and get smacked, or they don't, and Vega dies.
And the book-pond is kinda like Checkov's gun, this HAD to happen, just like Saul being alive. You don't get put in "stasis" (or whatever translation you read) and die permanently.

what a chapter. what a set up for elbaf.

The 6 moons of Vegapunk -- are they 100% independent beings? Or do they exist like zergs, with an overlord and shared consciousness? my understanding is that all the vegapunks are indeed like the zerg. it wouldnt really make sense that they are all independent minds and they have to come together to brain storm.
also i like the fact that vegapunk emphasises that there are decent people in the navy. it does highlight an important thing about the wg and the marines, which is that despite the marines being a suborganisation of the wg, they are actually kind of antagonistic factions. my guess about what happens with lucci is that his mission is disrupted by sword, rather than there being another clash between him and luffy, which luffy would obviously win. vegapunk might still die, but i dont see oda setting up another luffy vs lucci. cp0 is a wg organisation and therefore would receive an order to kill vegapunk because from the gorosei's perspective, his utility to the navy isnt worth the risk he presents due to his knowledge. the navy now has their own secret organisation though, and to me it seems the point of swords' existence from a storytelling perspective is to be a balance to cp0's presence. it would also make sense that navy higher ups would want to keep vegapunk alive, as vegapunk is specifically affiliated with the navy and his usefulness is obvious. it also makes sense that sword has recently received more panels for introductions, and that the navy ssg has increased importance after the warlords disappeared and therefore vegapunk has increased importance
ps. i cant get over the fact that young vegapunks head looks like an upside down ball sack.

Meanwhile all I'm thinking of is how the guy was able to shrink his head by cutting out the top

We will finally get Elbaf! I was starting to worry that it might be skipped

I cannot unsee Vegapunk head as a scrotum head....

SO MANY YEARS LATER. THE LAKE OF BOOKS. Saul!!! still alive!!!
omg... Oda DOES IT AGAIN...
:')
also nice parallels now that we know that Rob Lucci and the government is about to be in direct conflict with the strawhats again

It's a great chapter in theory but honestly the Vegapunk reveal is extremely disappointing. I just can't take him seriously at all. He's probably the worst designed character in the entire series. It really highlights a major issue for me with Oda's art style devolving over time. There's actually a term for it: flanderization.

To illustrate this, here's the rebels from Arabasta:

And here's the Big Mom pirates:

The new art style is just noisy and messy. Not a fan, at all. I wish Vegapunk (or his entire silhouette) was revealed 600 chapters ago, maybe then he'd at least be safe from this nonsense. And I wish Oda would at least practice a little more restraint when designing his characters.
|
Alabasta also had the Karoo squad, a pervy crab, a mole woman, and a dog-cannon.
|
I like how absurd Vegapunks head is, the tongue is a little much but Odas art has always been hyper exaggerated and having the brainiac with a literally enormous head works for me tbh
|
the rebels from arabasta were hardly memorable. koda was the only one with any real significance to the plot.
I think Law's crew is probably the most restrained design-wise out of all the groups in recent chapters and they're probably the most boring outside of Bepo and Jean Bart.
btw that comic from subnormality: winston rowntree was referring to characters being less nuanced and more exaggerated in behavior/personality. artists change their art all the time (see his work).

The good old ancient kingdom with advanced technology... Guess I'm slightly disappointed but that's probably because I've played way too many J-RPG in my life and that's the most overused trope ever... Not that big of a deal, still a cool chapter and hopefully, Oda has more surprises in store for us

New chapter is out! Early release this week.
Looks like it's confirmed that Vegapunk has done quite a bit of experimentation with Kaido's DNA, meaning that there's basically a 100% chance that a Kaido Seraphim will show up. Shichibukai Seraphim are one thing... but Yonko seraphim?! That is absolutely insane.
|
Omg whats up with the last panel?! Also first time we ever saw dragon distressed?

Now that I think about it, Bonney being marked "no longer useful" is an interesting development. Many have speculated that she was hounded by the government for her youth-granting powers or maybe because of her lineage, but both must clearly be wrong since she's now considered expendable. I think what makes way more sense is that she was a hostage held by the World Government to keep Kuma in line. Why else would Kuma voluntarily subject himself to government experiments and eventually die by getting fully borg'd unless the WG had some kind of leverage over him?
This also explains why Bonney is so emotional - she feels guilty for being the reason Kuma "died". It seems like this arc will feature Kuma pretty heavily though so I think he's going to get his consciousness back somehow. Maybe Vegapunk made a backup? Or maybe he added it to his own brain. Or perhaps even the old theory of Kuma pushing out his personality through the use of his fruit is also applicable. Either way, he's coming back. If Oda can bring Saul and Sabo back, he can certainly resurrect Kuma.

been a long time since weve had an arc as interesting as this

CP0 has badass masks. Even the bird is included! It's cute that Lucci still has him around.
Anyway, the ship has like three non-garbage members that can still get bonked by the SH crew. Something else besides a direct confrontation has to occur. Would be really cool to have a few panels with Lucci rehashing old times with the Straw Hats.
|
well now that vegapunk straight up asks luffy to take him away from the island, it could just be that vegapunk gets on the sunny and lucci sees the strawhats and reports back with "yeah im letting vegapunk go cause im not gonna get my ass beat against luffy again".
i still think sword will show up though. theyre better characters to keep cp0 occupied imo
