While it would have been satisfying to see Luffy win in the first Gear 4, it's important for the story for us to see the drawback and weakness of the new technique so that we can feel the tension and the risk when it is used in the future, and perhaps see growth and Luffy can use it longer, or with less down time, etc.

I will agree that the birdcage seems like a bit of a weak way to increase the tension and make everything depend on Luffy, but this is how it always goes. In every other major arc, it doesn't matter that the crew won their battles, everything could still be lost if Luffy loses his, and in this arc, that's achieved with the birdcage. It's perhaps a little under-explained for hypercritical internet readers, but for a comic book it's probably okay enough.

And for everyone who said "omg how come his glasses didn't break", even you have to admit it's damn satisfying to see them break now.

There's a couple things I haven't seen mentioned: first it seems like it was Rayleigh who taught Luffy gear 4, which seems weird to me since it is something so specific to Luffy's fruit. And Corazon says that D is a family, not a clan or group of people with some specific characteristic, which may mean Luffy, Roger, Law, Ace and everyone with D in their name are blood related. Or am I misinterpreting it?

Nowhere can I read that Ray taught Luffy Gear 4. He knows about the ability, thats it and he advises him about the weaknesses like an experienced fighter would.

Their ancestry are probably the same I would think but has split a long way. Like the Chinese name Lee is also spread to America and sometimes they look plain western.

You're probably right about the second point, although so far most people thought being a D had something to do with having some kind of Will and that it was somehow inherited.

Maybe its the translation you're reading?

The one I read had that conversation going down as basically Luffy saying the beast was too big even for gear 4 and Rayleigh telling him he needs to come up with an alternative or addition to gear 4 as it puts too much stress on his body etc.

Also the translation I read called it the Clan of D not the family, makes me more think of an older tribe, not everyone is from the same family in a tribe right?

It's hard to tell with translations though as either could just be flat out wrong or could both be right just interprating it differently etc.

Well yeah maybe some translations are misleading, I just now read on another site and interpreted exactly as you did, that Luffy needs an alternative to gear 4 and Corazon does indeed say the Clan of "D", not the family. And yea, not everyone has to be from the same family in a clan.

I've complained a lot near the end of this arc about bad chapters and breaks, dragging shit out etc. But I don't see how this is a bad chapter? I thought it was pretty damn good. Doffy had a bit of fight left in him, Luffy loses it goes Gear 4 again and smashes Doffy's face in. That is a pretty damn good chapter imo. Sprinkle in the flashback speech aboud the clan of D from Corazon and you've got a good chapter right there!

if this chapter had happened when he first used poundman it would have but there was so much filler the fight lost all its tension
