AFAIK only the best of the best of the Gotei 13 captains make it into zero squad. Makes sense if they are to guard the soul king. Wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys are as old or older than Yamamoto (and even more powerful).

creator of zanpaktou? does that make him like, the very first shinigami then? cuz any shinigami before him wouldn't make sense would it? or did they just have normal swords... kinda assumed the spirit king made them all this time. maybe all of them were the original gotei 13 along with CC who chose to be general. wierd tho cuz none of them look even half the age of cc.

We'll probably find out in the next chapter, but my guess is that the zanpaktou was created as a way to use spiritual power in fighting. That would mean, though, that any spirit with enough power would be capable of manifesting zanpaktou through training, ritual or whatever, and I'm not sure if that leaves holes in the story.

Well they talk about how Orihime's hairpins are similar to a zanpaktou but are a much weaker container . So maybe before that only a few people could lock away their powers and they were active the whole time. Or they had different containers for them, but not as good as the zanpaktou

Spiritual energy still plays a huge role in combat ability. I imagine Zanpakuto could have been after Yamamoto's "ascension" to power, and he would have still had the combat abilities and reiatsu to rule Soul Society.

I thought it was that the more spiritual energy you have the slower you age. Also, you have to remember he doesn't write ahead and a lot of this plot is made up on the fly, plenty of plot holes and poor explanations because of it.

CC pretty much formed the gotei 13 did he not? he was apart of the original if anything.
also CC said himself when he was fighting aizen that the reason he is the general is because there wasnt a single shinigami born in the past 1000 years stronger than he is, which included Aizen himself.
so 2 things, either these soul palace dudes were born way before CC or none of thim are stronger than him 1v1 (but combined they are)

Well everyone has mentioned Urahara and they said that he met the soul king. So he probably created something worth notice(likely). It is also possible that creating something meant an actual technique, like the healing of the hot springs, sealing of power(zanpaktou) and adding spiritual energy to other things(mod souls, food). So perhaps creating an organization isn't enough,
Also I kinda think that bug looking thing renji ate was a mod soul.

I'm going to say they are older than he is, but it could also be a case of an anime character talking himself up. I always figured it was something like CC and his 'gang of thugs' took control and were then recruited to become the gotei 13. Or, CC was and those guys were all part of the gang and they advanced while he decided to lead the gotei 13.
Lots of interesting possibilities. I'm actually enjoying this history lesson more than I am enjoying Naruto currently, and it's been awhile since I have found myself looking forward to Bleach more than Naruo...a long while, I'd say. [edit: well, last couple of chapters really]

I was actually thinking what the hot springs guy might have invented was discovering reiatsu itself. Healing is the obvious answer, and I fully expect that to be the case, by if we want to have a more interesting guess, those hot springs could be seen as pools of pure reiatsu so maybe he discovered how to use that energy in general.
