What if . . . when Shinigami die, they become their zanpaktou? So like, Yamamoto's Ryujin Jakka was a Shinigami in a past time that, when he died, his soul became the zanpaktou that Yamamoto wielded. Now that Yama is gone, his soul will become a new Ryujin Jakka ready to be wielded by a new, equally strong Shinigami in the future?
It's definitely non-canonical and I don't have any info to support the idea, it's just something I was thinking about.

Bankai was also created as mostly an improved version of shikai or an evolved version of shikai. It's pretty obvious that Kubo has driven himself to a corner with how some of the shikais are designed.

There was so much potential in the second stage of the hollow transformation, we never even got an explanation for how ichigo's second hollow form even worked. There are so many untapped hollow abilities that ichigo couldve learned like cero for example.

Sometimes I think if someone gave me all the Shikais i could create better Bankais than what Kubos made. But IMO he sorta boxed himself in with a final villain(in the aizen arc obv) when he gave Aizens Shikai total hypnosis tbh.

Kubo already had Aizen eat his Zanpaktou so he doesnt have to come up with a bankai for him

I'm sad because they made Shunsui Kyoraku's Bankai to be potentially awesome, not only was his Shikai alone strong enough to defeat the Primera Arrancar, but Ukitake also warns him not to use his Bankai here where there is so many people who can see it.. It sounds... borderline scary. =( But Bankai steal means unless Ichigo somehow figures out how to stop it, we'll never see a new bankai again =(
