![]() Ame Agaru Stumbled upon this Wednesday night. If you're into samurai movies, this one will not disappoint. More similar to Yoji Yamada's Samurai Trilogy than Kurosawa's work.

Yosul (2010), a.k.a. Magic. A rather sad movie about Korean conservatory students. Less about music than interpersonal drama, rather subtle/sterile acting. 4/10 Kuki Ningyo (2009), a.k.a. plastic doll. Plastic love doll comes to life, renders a view of the human world through her. 6/10 A Millionaire's first love (2006) The will, which comes with a massive monetary inheritance, states, an 18 year old boy must graduate from a rural highschool, else the money goes to charity. A rather soppy story, but a good bet if you're in for a (n evening with the missus) romantic film. 7/10 Ran (1985) By Akira Kurusowa, a tale of betrayal, samurai-time Japan, art-house-movie acting. 5/10 Going by the book (2007) Nubcake police officer gets assigned the role of bankrobber in a drill, takes it somewhat further than his superiors anticipate. Good idea, the realisation is somewhat lacking in believeability however. 4/10 Oblivion Island Haruka and the magic mirror (2009) Anime. The foxes who store all things forgotten are surprised when a young girl stumbles into their realm in search for her hand mirror. Rather quirky and moralistic at times, uninspired animation and story. 3/10 Speed Scandal (2008) Cha Tae-hyun, the male lead of 'My sassy girl', is a 3* year old radio host, who, giving good advice to his listeners in matters of love and life, gets payed a visit from a girlfriend past. Ok-ish idea, family film-ish execution. 3/10 Postman to heaven (2009) Girl meets boy, who happens deliver people's mail to heaven. Nice story about grief, comes with a twist. Decent acting, rather acceptable execution of the concept. 7/10 Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) Old boy's Kang Hye-jeong is a mad-but-friendly girl, Jeong Jae-yeong a deep-down-in-his-heart dprk officer, well actually the story is about a secluded village getting north and south soldiers, as well as an american navy pilot seeking refuge from the Korean war. They all soften up considerably and even learn to cooperate. Sounds as cheesy as it is, but the great cast make for a moderately nice film. 6/10 Samaritan girl (2004) Two girls prostituting themselves to make money to go on a trip to Europe, one's father being a criminal investigator, where could it all be going? Despite the base concept a reasonably entertaining experience. 5/10 Windstruck (2004) Jun Ji-hyun (my sassy girl) is a (surprise!) crazy police officer, who falls in love with a highschool teacher. Together they have many (guess what?) silly adventures, before it all ends up in a sweeping drama. A worthy successor to 'My sassy girl', the one person who could pull it off is in it, so just watch it. 8/10

![]() Quite good movie. For the first bit you are sorta like, where is this going; it doesn't have a great hook to start. The characters end up coming to life over the course of the trip in the movie exactly like you could imagine a tentatively-embarked on trip in real life. It's courageous in that neither of the two characters you follow are people you are entirely sure you can sympathize with but they each have their moments which makes you build a fondness anyway and lets this be a starting point for thinking. Has some hilarious moments/touches too (mostly found in the not-outrageous parts).

When the film was screened at Cannes in 1997 it shocked the audience badly enough that many viewers, including some film critics, walked out of the screening. Wrong. They left because its a fucking shitty ass terrible movie. Director Michael Haneke told producer 'Veit Heiduschka' during the production that if the film was a success, it would be because audiences had misunderstood the meaning behind it. no you fucking idiot, it was a bad movie stop making them. Further judging of the IMDB boards lead me to believe this movie is one giant troll. Most pretentious load of crap I've ever seen.

This is a movie with one of the best plot twists in the history and a trailer that is + Show Spoiler + purposefully misleading about the theme of the movie. Granted if you missed the trailers maybe some of that effect would be lost on you.

![]() Best such thriller since the days of Seven and The Bone Collector. Literally blew my mind, why hasn't it been advertised more still eludes me since it definitely carries the Armies of Exigo effect (an excellent product that doesn't get attention it desires due to poor/lack of advertising).

I finally saw A Serious Man. I'm not sure what to think of it. It's an okay film, but incredibly frustrating to watch. Perhaps it hit too close to home with everything I despise about American Judaism and the communities that often go with it, and I was just hoping for utter destruction by the end with a 2x4, ala Walking Tall. It was like purely out of my grandparents' Detroit Conservative community. I don't imagine you can relate if you didn't have to sit through the arrogance, absurd superstition, guilt and veiled selfishness growing uo. + Show Spoiler + The ending helped, but I don't know if it was worth sitting through the rest.
