I didn't necessarily miss that, my problem is that it indulges in it for 90 minutes without anything substantial to say. It's a boring, superficial mess, there needs to be some payoff, something interesting. There isn't.
Deconstruction can be done masterfully like haneke did with funny games, or it can be done like this. One of the worst movies i have seen in a very long time.

I liked spring breakers when I watched it several years ago. I wouldnt agree its an overindulgence; its just pushing things to the point of being sickening. Basically what kwark said.

That's the 2nd time in a week I've seen someone sig a quote from this GD and I have never witnessed a sig quote happen in my TL history ever before. -Najda

Wasn't Ready Player One a rip on Summer Wars as well or another Anime movie that is basically the same? I haven't seen it as i don't have interest in watching that kinda film being a non anime for whatever reason xD

No it is based on a novel with the same name, didn't read that though.

The plot is secondary in Ready Player One. Its a spectacle of hundreds of movie and video game characters all in one film, with Steven Spielberg directing it. Just enjoy the ride.

You didn't miss much. It has pretty much the same problem as the movie, the story, characters and everything is targeted at teenagers/young adults while the references are targeted at people who are in their thirties now. It was pretty confusing for me since all I liked in there was it reminding me of some old stuff, the story and characters I couldn't care less about.

At first this seems like a cutesy kids animation but it isn't really. Its very sad all the way through and is a nice, honest look at people with aspergers and how they relate to the world.
The animation style is really good, and although the story is told in a really simple, narrated way it gets into some pretty deep stuff and had me laughing out loud too.
This was a real good surprise.

I watched this because Jake Gylenhaal and Amy Adams are two of my favourites, but I didn't really get this movie to be honest. I like melancholy movies in general but this was just really dour and depressing. The message of the movie seemed to be all negative and about horrible shit happening to people and although the photography and direction were really good I just didn't feel much watching it to be honest.

Disappointing

I just watched lion king and then hobbs and shaw.

I'm not afraid to say that I'm totaly wrong about the movie. Its really really a good movie. It might be a better movie then the original strickly. I don't think its as much of an accomplishment as the cinderella remake was to repair the faults and highlight the success's but its still really good. I guess they had the time to finish rendering the lipsynching and everythings pretty good other then when they need to make an O sound.

Who's nalla's dad btw? yeah I bet I just ruined the movie for you too. 10/10 for kids 7/10 for everyone else.

Hobbs and shaw deliver exactly what you were advertised for. Its got its 80's-90's practical effects with a nolan esce "superheroes without superpowers" level of believability. I saw a few historical pictures of the rocks RL wrestling family so that was cool and the joke with the tatoo that the rock has on his chest was funny. 10/10 for people who want this 4/10 for those that don't.

Just got back from seeing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Solid Tarantino film, but not my favorite. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are sensational in it. The final 15-30 minutes is awesome. Middle of the movie is kind of forgettable at parts.

I saw The Farewell today. I'd say it's a solid 9/10 for me, though as a second-generation Chinese American, I do have a bias towards the premise.

I did shed tears, but they were balanced with a good number of laughs. The grandmother stole the show with a wonderful sense of energy and humor in contrast to the awkward somberness from the rest of the family. I also loved the authenticity in every part of the movie. I swear, some of those scenes were seemingly lifted from my own memories, though it has been well over a 15 years since I've last visited China.

The pacing did get kinda weird at times. Some shots would noticeably linger, perhaps to highlight some subtle symbolism, a location change, or non-verbal emotional cues from the characters. The slow-mo walking scenes almost felt like padding, though perhaps there's some symbolic significance on further analysis. The writing has almost a slice-of-life vibe to it, as though the director/writer only made minor alterations and embellishments to tie together some thematic cohesion.

I saw the movie with my parents and grandmother. Funnily enough, my grandmother didn't connect with the movie as much as the rest of us did. Since she was a nurse, she did confirm the practice of withholding fatal diagnosis from patients. Allegedly, it was to prevent suicide.

Overall, I'm glad I saw this movie. The contrast between eastern and western values really resonated with me, as did the authenticity of the characters and dialogue. For other viewers, I think the film offers a charming, sometimes tear-jerking, sometimes chuckle-inducing slice-of-life story of family and heritage that straddles between two cultures.

Separating the "reality" of the movie from the fantasy presented in Edward's book, nothing really terrible happens. There's the emotional malaise of a self-destructing marriage, Susan alternating between backhanded cynicism and professional pride in a clearly satirical presentation of the modern art world, and her imagination concerning what the novel means.

I think the message doesn't make sense until you realize all her visualization and emotional interpretation of Nocturnal Animals (the book) is separate from the work itself. There's no substantial evidence that Edward is reflecting his insecurities on the page or took their old flame as inspiration. It's Susan projecting her regret, memory, and dissatisfaction with her current life onto it.

Yeah I kind of get that, but I still found the movie just really too depressing. I think its one of those things where I just don't 'get it' if you know what i mean. Not that I don't understand it, but that I don't feel what it wants me to feel when i watch it.

It was clever, yeah, but I think the weird emotional distance that's a part of the film turned me off a little bit. Its strange because its the same kind of atmosphere you would get in a Kubrick film, but it was missing quite a few ingredients to be that good in my opinion.

Mary and Max is great, i love stop motion animation and this is definitely one of my favorites so far. Emotional, hilarious, deep, full of unique ideas, just a great movie all around.
I definitely second this recommendation and hope some people check it out

I understand. The Master is in the same boat for many people too. To me its "point" straightforward and affecting but a lot of viewers find it divisive.

The Greatest Showman - Musicals are generally a miss for me. I couldn't even finish Les Miserables and Moulin Rouge. But I actually really enjoyed this one. The songs are great in that they enhance the scenes rather than calling attention to itself. Hugh Jackman's got the charisma and he got me interested in reading about the real PT Barnum. Zac Efron was good in it as well, not overshadowed by Jackman's character. Zendaya was a revelation though. I think the side story between her character and Efron's was well-acted and sincere, even though the plot is not new. An overall fun movie for me.

Anyone saw Good Boys? Is it more than just another “Superbad”? I saw 84 on RT so now I’m wondering.

Fought with my friend that I wanted to see the QT film instead.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - I don't know why this Tim Burton movie is in the children's section of my library because it contains a lot of creepy and nightmare-inducing scenes. Eva Green is great in it though, bringing a bit of spice in an otherwise bleak movie. The peculiars are not really interesting but the monsters are. If you're in a mood for a little creepy feeling you will probably enjoy this film.
