Yeah. This is a curious choice. I don't think she has enough star power for the role, especially compared to Idris Elba. I think its going to be a tough sell.

i would kind of expect her to be the new ‘007’ but not necessarily the new ‘Bond,’ though that does kind of scare me into the idea of losing ‘James Bond.’

Yeah i read a few pieces last night just saying she has the agent name of 007 but Daniel Craig is still "bond" in the film he has just retired/lost the tag. Does that mean as brian put that we are losing James Bond after this and it will just be a "mission impossible" but with English accent? xD

Anyone see Midsommar and think they could've taken it even further. Was actually semi disappointed it wasn't more disturbing. Enjoyed the movie though, would recommend seeing it if you like weird movies. Not alot of them take place purely in daytime.

I watched The Dead Don't Die the other day and it was pretty enjoyable. I'm still trying to wrap my head around some parts of it, and think I need a little more time to digest.

Overall, at the surface level it's got a good amount of laughs, and though it's slow-paced, it never felt like it dragged. As a genre film it holds together well before going fully off the rails in the last 10 minutes or so. It's pretty self-reflexive and meta-aware, so that plays into things as well.

The only other Jarmusch film I've seen so far is Only Lovers Left Alive which I really liked. I'm thinking I'll have to view his other films. Anyone have recommendations on where to start?

So anyone seen The Lion King. My daughter after seeing Aladdin she keeps saying about Yasmine and sings all her songs and I would like to take her to lion king to make her forget about Yasmine for a while. it can get really hectic in the house when she is screaming the word "speechless" over and over again.

I haven't seen it but i heard they did it the same as the original story just with some extra songs Beyonce has put in as she is like the lead music director for whatever reason they thought that was a good idea. I haven't seen it myself like i said and i will probably wait until its out to rent on Sky/Cable but if i had children i would be going to see it for sure.

Just saw Toy Story 4.

Very very good. I didn’t see the third one (and u don’t really need to) but this movie was very close to what I remembered and loved from the first two. Lots of tugging at ur emotions cause u can resonate with the toys and their deep complexities and how hey overcome them.

Toy Story 4 was great, but I did like Toy Story 3 more, likely due to a more personal connection to the movie. I grew up with Toy Story 1 and 2. Toy Story 3 was about the boy Andy moving on to college, and the movie came out right when I was in the same situation. I bawled my eyes out twice during that movie. Toy Story 4 was fun and poignant, but not enough for tears.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Finally got to see this and it was worth the hype. The story is great: at times poignant, funny, and contains surprising twists. The soundtrack stands out in multiple scenes but are not detrimental to the film. Happy to have missed spoilers before getting to watch this film.

Man, I really hope Into the Spiderverse becomes a staple of the IP going forward. With that + The Spiderman PS4 game, it got me into the comics since last December. Although it was a very uphill battle. (The Actual Spiderverse comics are completely different, its about universe traveling vampires killing Spidermen).

Has anyone seen the new Tarantino film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? That's probably the next film I'm going to see. I heard its very different than Tarantino's previous work.

I watched some movies since the last time i did this, here it goes

Like father, like son

My third Koreeda, it is about two families on opposite sides of the socioeconomic spectrum one day getting the message that the kid they took care of over the last 6 years isn't actually theirs.
This is a premise which takes a lot of emotional intelligence to execute, and if you know koreeda you'll obviously realize that he is the master of humanist filmmaking these days.
Both families obviously have their struggle with this information, what would you do if you found out that the kid you love isn't actually your biological offspring? The film doesn't judge, doesn't push the viewer into a clearcut moral perspective, it has a lot of empathy with everyone involved, first and foremost the kids themselves. The performances are great and convincing, it's well shot, it's a beautiful film which will definitely get one or two tears out of you. Doesn't get much better than this.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

I played the first three generations of videogames, i watched the anime as a kid, i even had a pikachu plush. One could say that i am part of the target audience.
If only this movie would deliver on more than ryan reynold's voice acting and some nostalgia bait, it could have been decent fun. What we got now is some below average cost with the biggest brandname in the world attached to it, one could have seen it coming when looking at the oeuvre of the man in charge though...

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Martin McDonagh's talent was already visible in "seven psychopaths" and especially in "in bruges", but "three billboards outside ebbing, missouri" is the film which in my opinion cements him as a director to always keep an eye on from now on.
It's a story about a grieving mother, Mildred Hayes, who lost her daughter half a year ago in a brutal rape case. There is still no progress in the investigative process which leads mildred to make her discontent to be known, quite openly on three billboards.
What follows is the conflict between her and the representation of the police department of that rural town.

McDonaugh loves his dark humor and it's definitely present in this work as well, this time there is a lot of emotional load on top of that though, real heartfelt scenes and developments one wouldn't have expected, but the mix works beautifully. The characters have depth, everyone has their flaws but we still are able to feel with these characters, understand where they are coming from and thus ultimately care for their journey.
It should have won best original screenplay without a doubt, and best picture on top of that. At least Frances Mcdormand and Sam Rockwell got their due in their respective acting categories, there isn't a weak performance in this film but both of them played out of their mind and ultimately made me forget that i am watching a performance.

What can i say, i loved this film, it's one of the very best movies of recent years, go and watch it now.

Us

Jordan Peele's 2nd feature film fails at places where "get out" succeeded. It doesn't mix in the humorous elements with as much tact, it overexplains things which ultimately allow the audience to nitpick the plot and while he definitely wanted to make an outright horror movie, the horror elements are largely uninspired and stale.
I appreciate the 2nd layer of the film, the metaphors, the message, but that alone isn't good enough to make this one a favorite of mine.

Dunkirk

Nolan's work gets more and more frustrating to watch. While he has grand ideas and the budget to execute on them, his stories are less and less coherent and concise.
Now don't get me wrong, this is a good looking film, but even the presentation falters when you notice that the beach is rather empty, that there is no blood while bombs literally explode on people (i am not advocating for violence being a prime priority, but if you present something a certain way, you have to go through with it, especially in an anti war film).
Then you have the three different timelines, Nolan loves to integrate time as a theme in his movies, but here i don't see the added value, in fact i'd argue that a core aspect of it is largely unnoticeable until the very end, a gimmick rather than a meaningful addition and ultimately it creates a rather repetitive narrative.
To give some credit where its due, the film creates scenes and situations which are rather intense, one could argue it's not a film about war but rather survival. The score of hans zimmer does the majority of the work to make this happen.
So if you are interested in listening to a ticking clock for almost 2 hours, this is the film for you.

12 years a slave

Masterpiece about one of america's black spots in history, the slavery of african americans and everything that went with it.
Now i am not american and thus somewhat removed from the remnants of this time, but i obviously still knew about the horror and dehumanisation which occurred not so long ago.
With that being said, i wasn't prepared for how Steve McQueen orchestrates this part of history, it's brutal not for shock value's sake, it's always strifing to simply be truthful, observing rather than manipulating.
That doesn't stop the film from having some compassionate and emotionally rich moments though, in the end this is the personal story of Solomon Northup, based on the autobiographical work of the same name.

Ready player one

Hey do you know alien? Or overwatch? Or halo? Or the shining? Or the iron giant? Or king kong? Or any other of the million references in this story?
That's almost everything this film tries to generate pleasure from, nostalgia and nerd trivia. It doesn't care for what these things represent, what the original stories tried to convey, all that matters is the iconograpic value of it without truly giving a damn about the meaning behind the symbols.
It's ultimately a shallow story, decently made on a technical level.

Chungking express

This film just radiates a certain mood and feeling and it's beautiful. The melancholy when a relationship comes to an end, not any form of a whiny, self-pitying scenario, more of a reflective looking back at the good things, the beautiful moments, the poetic elements and rituals which deep down give a sense of meaning and belonging.
There are only a few questions to answer, do you like atmospheric films? Do you like charismatic characters with asian life philosophies?
And most importantly, what is your stance on pineapples?

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

This movie looks fantastic, incredible visual style which incorporates typical comicbook techniques into a smooth and effective film experience, a mixture of 2d and 3d animation, hopefully being used in future films to great success.
Still, at the end of the day this is another origin story and one which tries to do a little too much, it's bloated. Countless of villains, different versions of spiderman where most of them don't get any room, trying to mix too many different aspects into it. If it was a little more focused and thus gained depth it could be great, hopefully the 2nd one will improve on that.

7/10

Spring Breakers

This is a 94 minute long music video with a barely coherent narrative.
The director either doesn't have the skill to orchestrate any meaningful scenes or he thinks it's deep and effective to simply forgo this concept and rather show us a lot of partying with ominous voice overs.
Don't get me wrong, i like boobs just as much as the next guy, but at some point the reading shifts from a criticism of these superficialities to an indulgence of it.
Yeah James Franco's character is fun to watch for a bit, but ultimately it goes nowhere satisfying either. A big waste of time...

3/10

Memories of murder

Based on the Hwaseong serial murders which are the most infamous case in the modern history of south korea this movie follows a small town's detective who tries to solve the recent rape and murder cases.
A big part of this movie is showcasing how overwhelmed the detectives of this rural area are, how ineffective and questionable their methods, how inept the whole machinery. This brings humoristic elements to the film which work wonderfully and complement the general tone, while also making us realise just how desperate the situation really is.
What this movie does exceptionally well is the staging and cinematography, it never becomes boring visually, there is always a new angle, a new beautiful shot, new complexity added through multilayered mise en scène. There is a great "every frame a painting" video about this if you are interested.
What makes this film ultimately work so well is how it absorbs you and doesn't let you out of its grip until the very end, an ending which might send a chill down your spine, it sure did for me.

I think you may have missed the point of Spring Breakers. It took a bunch of Disney stars and used them to deconstruct the shallowness and incoherence of the American ideal that they themselves had constructed. You’re not meant to be enthralled when they start singing Britney Spears, you’re meant to be question how they’re so incapable of understanding how lost they are in that moment. It’s a dark mirror of a movie, the subject is the audience. It’s not just a movie about aimless American teenagers chasing a dream that they don’t realize has become a nightmare, the cast members embody the dream and you, the audience showing up to see the star Disney cast, are the aimless Americans.

Yeah it’s a Harmony Korine movie, evocative disgust is intended all along the way.
