From my first impression I have to say that I was disappointed with The Revenant. I don't do a big review since I only do that if I have watched a movie atleast two times but some thing really bugged me.
Problems with timeline:
In one scene someone wished Hardy a nice new year. Then we have Leo hiding himself from a storm. next scene thawing gets implied. Next scene Leo walks past a huge frozen landscape. WTF?
Relatively flat characters apart from the main two (we only get oneliners regarding the Indians motivation). The rest of the party and its voyage hardly gets any coverage. I would have wanted abit more from such a long movie
All in all I saw a movie with great camera and landscape with good acting but many holes in the plot, timeline and flat characters. Style over substance. If I would have to rate it it would probably fall around the 6 - 6.5 range.
I feel that the movie wasted a lot of potential imo it could have been so much better with a bit more care to scripting and character depth.

Utterly predictable, mostly recycling old ideas. Added nerd nostalgia porn. Kinda funny at times though, and effects were done well.
The Martian
I guess I'm bad at suspending my sense of disbelief. Leave all critical thinking behind and hope that is enough. Maybe it's just that the editing makes it look dumber than it is. But overall a good example of the kind of situation where vlogs and selfies are acceptable -> when you are stranded and dying on Mars. Adapting the book really took away a lot of the exposition for what Whatney is thinking and the actual thought process. Him going to get that heat source for example isn't just, "Time to get in my RV and scoot and hop to dig it up." It is worth a read if you have the time and interest.

Meh. The script was pretty bad. The acting wasn't great. The music was crap. The premise was totally run-of-the-mill. The tension wasn't there. There were no real emotions. Also, Adonis - who the hell came up with naming the kid like that? I know it kind of plays into Apollo and keeping up with the mythology theme here but, seriously, of all the names they picked Adonis? Was the purpose of it being to give it a deeper meaning (Apollo being reborn in his son?). Didn't dig that.
Overall, a boring, mediocre and totally forgettable movie.

On topic of everyone saying the acting in the Revenant wasn't top notch. Leo just took the award for lead actor for his performance lol. Hateful Eight got best score, definitely well deserved, was one of the top things I took note of when watching it.

Overall, a boring, mediocre and totally forgettable movie. Well Stallone did just win a Golden Globe for it and Michael B Jordan acting is hardly mediocre... The script-writing was better than most mainstream films, and some lines are deliberately dumb cause that's how Rocky thinks/talks. I guess you just weren't in the mood or it's not your thing. I totally bought into the character of Adonis, the name didn't really bother me much either. There was a ton of emotion/tension towards the end for me and the music was very Rocky. Tbh your review is how I felt about the latest sci-fi from a thread far far away.

Let's not pretend the Golden Globes are a measure of quality here.

They serve as a baseline for quality. It's unlikely that a trash film will receive one.

Like Lady Gaga winning over Kirsten Dunst? Or The Martian being put in the Best Musical or Comedy category? Or when The Tourist got 3 nominations in 2010? They are a pretty poor baseline of quality.

Who takes the Globes seriously? Not only are the voters of questionable quality (Hollywood Foreign Press ha), but studios regularly buy which categories movies are put into.

Sure the Martian got a favorable category as a 'Comedy', but the awards we're talking about were ones in the "any motion picture" general category. I've seen 3/5 of those nominated for Best Motion Picture and they are all quality films. Three of the four best acting performances were also deserving imo. Sure there's the odd dud pick, but writing off winning a golden globe in film, as meaningless, seems pretty ridiculous.
You cite Gaga winning over Dunst in the TV Movie category. So what? That's hardly prestigious, and unless you've watched both performances you can't trash it either. Gaga wouldn't be the first singer to act well and Dunst will forever have the Spidermans blighting her acting credentials.

I was actually trying to compare this movie to Warrior or Wrestler and it pales in comparison with any of them in my opinion.

Wrestler was fantastic, one of my all-time favorites, though I feel it's a bit unfair to compare it to straight-up fighting genre films. Warrior was very entertaining but I won't remember it as fondly as Creed (probably due to nostalgia).
Anyway, I'd be curious to hear everyone's top 5's for 2015 to see if I missed any good ones.
Mine would be something like: Mad Max, Ex Machina, Creed, It Follows and Spring in no particular order.

I did like Sicario and it was a very good film, glad was more than just me who liked that one. Also pretty cool it is getting into a lot of top 5 films of 2015.
