The rest of the movie is kinda OK-ish, but this scene tops it all.
Looking fwd to Kill Bill Vol.3 now.

Pan's Labyrinth I think you really need to look up the historical context of Francoist Spain beforehand, and the themes after your first sitting to really get the most out of the movie. There's a lot of motifs and shit.

![]() Victoria 2015 ★★★★½ Watched 08 Jun, 2015 I was hooked from the start and then blown away by the end of the first act in an intimate little scene between the protagonists. All of a sudden there was a shift of genres when I was worried Schipper's film is gonna stumble. But somehow the u-turn from the celebration of the lightness of being to an intense crime thriller worked. Perfect casting. Authentic characters. Fucking Berlin. Obligatory mention of it being 140 minutes (which fly by) in one take (Seriously though how the fuck did they do it?). A German genre film - and a good one?! Yeah, my favourite film this year thus far.

Technocracalyps ![]() Problem with tech documentaries, especially low budget ones, is that they don't age well. The premise of technology: gene research and AI, replacing humans is a nice one to learn about but when the movie's 9 years old you already know most of it and the rest is outdated. The Gunman ![]() Not bad. Shooty shooty kind of movie like Taken.

I loved it. The first thing that stands out is the outstanding visuals. Beyond the fact that this is the most crisply animated movie to date (makes sense since it's the newest), it also is the most imaginative and fun visually that I've ever seen in the animated genre. Story wise, I found it a breath of fresh air. It was imaginative, exciting, sad and, frankly, interesting. I knew about all the PHDs that worked with the writers on the specifics of human psychology, but it was especially fun to see how all the real functions of the brain translated visually onto the screen. All 5 primary characters got plenty of screen time (with Anger being a personal favorite - Lewis Black is the perfect typecast here), with Joy and Sadness standing out. It was a treat to simply look at the intricate designs of the characters. This is a movie that will definitely have you introspecting afterwards; considering how your own brain works, what emotion dominates your personality, and how much control you actually have over your own actions. On a scale of 4/4 or 5/5, I'd give it top grades. On a scale of 10/10 I'd give it 9.5/10, since it isn't 100% accurate when it comes to psychology (such as leaving off other "characters" in the control center), even if it does better than most. On a side note, I LOVED the Pixar Short at the start of this one. Lava (go google it if you know nothing to watch 30s clip) is an entrancing love story that succeeds magnificently insofar as it makes you feel sad for a damn mountain in mere 7min of time. The song is so damn catchy! I can understand why some people would be put off by. However, I thought it was amazing and is the most memorable of the Pixar Shorts I've ever seen.

And the colour: pale and shallow like the life most of the dreadful characters sleepwalk through. The most stylish part to me was the camera movement when Brandon lost track of the train girl in the station. It felt like a perverse inversion of the standard romantic cliche where the guy sees (and loses) his future love, except it's so obvious that Brandon isn't driven by those feelings.

This movie did so much right that most horror movies just don't do. Horror movies require suspense, or a buildup of atmosphere. People need to be worried about what's going to happen next. The problem that many seem to face is that they're boring. The characters are boring or the between time is boring, with a lot of nothing happening. In Insidious, the main character is okay, the old lady plays her part very well and the dad believes his daughter way earlier than most other horror movies. There's almost always stuff happening, with jump scares which aren't really there only for the scares, but for further advancing the plot. THE REALLY IMPORTANT THING: the main character is helpless. She doesn't do anything really stupid, and she can't run, so she can't make stupid mistakes. There isn't any "wow, I would have done this in my situation" because you don't really have the ability to do anything. Big problem though: when you can fight against the horror, it stops being scary. This is why in most horror video games, you can only run or hold off the horror. The last third or whatever of the movie has the old lady doing battle with the spirit, and that's not scary... at all. Some of it was kind of funny I guess. They also didn't resolve a few plot points, but whatever. Bit of a rant, but horror movies are at their best when we're unsure about what we're up against (motive, form, abilities) and where the buildup is enjoyable. Jason is a good example of a horror, because he's just killing you. You don't really know why, and all you can really do is run (it's okay if you happen to beat the horror in the end, movie's over). "Unfriended" is a great example of buildup, where shit's constantly happening and we get to see more of the plot without it seeming dull (even if Unfriended could be really funny at times). Oh yeah, Insidious 7/10
