hah this is a cool idea. the one with russell crowe was so bleh though and i dont understand how because mark strong and crowe are usually good. maybe i need to watch again.
men in tights gets better with every watch though goddamn do i love that movie
Oh yeah, the Russell Crowe Robin Hood -_-.
Reminds me how Hollywood tried to make remake all these classics as "darker and grittier" versions. There was Robin Hood, and that King Arthur one with Clive Owen, and that whole slew ones like Troy and stuff.
They could've just stuck with the original mythos' and had their dark and gritty movies...and had plots that made better sense.
Well, that's basically a given with "greatest" lists. When you are comparing things for greatness you (for the most part) look at it's significance, importance and notability.
That's why every greatest video game list has stuff like Ocarina of Time at the top.
Edit: Don't get me wrong though just because something is old and influential doesn't mean they still can't be flat out "better" than stuff that came out afterwords. That's especially true with many movies.
Anyway, I just saw Interstellar. Nolan tries so damned hard to force emotion into his movies it's verging on pathetic. Pretty mediocre movie in all regards. Good visuals, but even then much of the space stuff was almost so abstract and odd it was hard to really know if you were impressed or not. The only thing I genuinely liked about it was a surprise appearance of a fat Matt Damon playing a comedically loathsome character.
People complaining that lists of best movies written by critics contain titles they haven't seen and therefore are overrated make me laugh. I don't agree with everything on the list (Tokyo Story is an old farts' movie about young people being dicks, The Searchers is a arguably strange choice among Ford's amazing filmography, Battleship Potemkin is very enjoyable but the semi-legendary history around its montage makes it overrated, similar story for Breathless - Contempt at least please, same for Citizen Kane apart this is for everything- still a great movie, Bergman being underrated, Bresson too and I don't think Au hasard Batlthazar is its greatest, a strange total lack of Mankiewicz in top places which is imo much worse than the lack of post 80 movies...) but between this and imdb, I know which one is ridiculously stupid and shows a total lack of culture from the voting people. Hollywood movies quality has been alas on the decline for the last 20 years.
Saw this a few nights ago. Nice surprise, bit of a genre hybrid of horror-romance (though it isn't really scary). The script and acting feels really natural, the cinematography is stunning and it's all astonishingly well made considering the budget. Think 'Before Sunrise' if it was re-made as a creature feature.
Seeing someone mention the princess bride reminds me; why do people like this film?
A little while ago we were looking for a comedy film to watch with the family. I checked imdb and saw the princess bride as fairly highly rated, having no idea what it was we decided to watch the film.
We ended up finishing the film but just barely. Every single one of us was bored to death. Yet when I read things on the internet people regard it like its the second coming of jesus, why?

It's a lot like things like Matrix or Seinfeld or something. By now everything has copied or parodied things that The Princess Bride did, which really lessens the movie after-the-fact.
That said, I can see why it wouldn't really stand up as a comedy. It's more of a parody movie that makes fun of fairy-tale Epics by taking things to a silly degree, but treating it completely seriously.
Avatar wasnt that special to be any higher. DOnt get me wrong i enjoyed the movie, just like another 1000 others. A have similar thoughts about more examples you put in that post.

i don't think it was influential. Siskel and Ebert are pretty open minded guys and they say Blade Runner sucks balls.
37th of all time? was it even 37th at the Box Office the year it came out? lol.
if u want to talk about influential movies in this era ( late 70s/early 80s ) then i'd go with Superman The Movie.
It set the formula for how to make a big-budget//top-name-actor, comic book movie. it was way more influential than Blade Runner and it made like 5X as much cash as Blade Runner at the Box Office.
Every Clarke-Kent//Kal-El since Superman THe Movie came out 40 years ago is compared to Christopher Reeve.
I finally got around to watching The Hobbit: Battle of The Five Armies and I'm not exactly surprised at how much further Jackson bastardized it. The forced romance, unnecessary "epic fights omg", a bad antagonist who wasn't even necessary and an over-reliance on CGI.
Just watched Fast and the Furious 7. It's a type of movie that you just forget thinking too much and just enjoy the movie, pretty entertaining . And man that feels trip on the last part. </3
