Also seen Horns recently. Was 10x better than I expected. A very well done crime thriller with a nice supernatural twist to it. I liked it a lot, despite being pretty biased against it in the beginning.

Okay, so one of my friends had spoken about it at length a few weeks ago before I actually saw the film, saying that it was such a subversion of all the superhero genre tropes. And I watch it, trying to keep an eye out for any of these things she is talking about. And I just don't see them? It's possible I don't know the superhero genre that well -- I haven't seen most of the MCU films -- but tbh, GotG doesn't ... it doesn't read like a superhero film at all despite being MCU. It seemed more like Star Wars and Shrek mashed together. And maybe that's the subversion? But I don't know if I would call that a subversion, more of a "let's label this as a superhero movie and just write it like something else entirely!" type of film. I have no clue. Very entertaining movie, but I'm kind of bemused.

The protagonist (human) is so confident and skilled in what he does to never actually be in danger. It also build up like a normal superhero movie (but think more Avengers, not like standalones) in the sense that they overcome the classical hurdles, form a stronger bond as a group and then ALWAYS the big bad guys makes bad things and everything seems doomed untill the original firstly introduced person saves the day. It's classic, very formulaic and predictable (or are these synonyms for eachother?) Now has anyone seen the Maze Runner and was it good, or was it also this typical hollywood movie? PS not saying GotG was bad, just saying it was silly and very formulaic... those might seem negative terms, but it's just how it is. I did kind of enjoy the movie though, but that's all a Holywood movie will get out of me nowadays. They'll really have to step up their game for new releases for me to actually be impressed

Also, a lot of people are let down by it because it got hyped so much when it was first released. It's very good, but it won't survive that kind of hype.

Not much of a fan of all the "young fiction" being turned into movies recently (Ender's Game, Hunger Games, City of Bones, Insurgent and this) but it wasn't half bad.

Definitely worth seeing but like Manut0u said it kinda falls in line with all the teen movies coming out.

But yea, they are all very similar. If you were to watch Divergent, Maze Runner, Hunger Games, I Am Number 4 back to back. You'd probably end up mixing everything up in your head. I don't think Ender's Game would fall into the Young Adult fiction category though?

It didn't feel that way when I was reading it, though admittedly, that's a long while ago. Anyway, just watched The Boxtrolls. Pretty good, the 2 side characters of Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade are pretty meta. had a good laugh listening to them.

I just filled out a profile on one of those movie recommender sites. Hopefully it works well.

I've read it for the first time only recently and was very unimpressed with it. If I was 15-16 when I read it, it would probably blow my mind but now? You can see the final twist halfway through the book, it's really hard to put yourself in the shoes of the protagonists when they're half your age etc. etc. Pretty meh and nothing really innovative in there. if you want to try another young adult book series try the Mistborn books from Brandon Sanderson. I like them a lot and I read them when I was 23 or something like that ![]()

3/10 Two things: 1. I am an atheist but ain't exactly against religious people since my parents are religious 2. I had very little knowledge about the movie other than it is based on Moses. The movie itself takes an interesting POV, it doesn't justify God's work onto the Egyptians like most other Christian movies try to. Moses would even argue against God (who is depicted as a child, my parents disliked it but I thought it was pretty clever) It also questions on faith a little ("which God?"; "which God would kill children", not exact quotes) But The movie ultimately fails because of pacing. It spent roughly one hour just displaying how Egyptians suffer from God's divine punishments, such as the locusts. It's incredibly sickening to watch through that whole part and I have sat through movies like A Serbian Film but none of them stirred up this feeling to me. Unlike disaster films where strangers die and you won't feel much. In this movie, somehow you feel disgusted at how those people suffer. At the end, no one in my family liked it, I stand by my recommendation that we should have went to watch interstellar instead.
