Do you make a habit of reading several-thousand-year-old books and taking precautions against the things they depict?

Well, all these "I'd act totally rational if I would be in utter panic!" posts are even sillier. Who'd have thought. I'd totally leave the dagger behind in utter panic, because let's face it - I am unbloodied. And so are most of us on TL. That also means we are not brave. Yes, people claiming they would do better are probably kidding themselves. But that does not make Sam any less of a craven. It's not black and white like that. Sam is a coward in the conventional sense. He is not combat oriented. Nor are most of us on TL.

Such a lapse of judgement fits Sam's character and is thus believable enough (especially given the circumstances), and it will probably serve the plot in some way. Personally I really don't see the problem with it.

I don't think birds have any real understanding of creating atmosphere and I don't think they'd care that much about it if they did. I think they were linked in some way to magics, north of the wall with the wierwood tree (part of the old religion) and the white walkers and Craster's baby to be sacrificed there's all sorts of old magic going on. Not sure if they were trying to be helpful and warn him or scare him or watch him or if they are simply drawn to the WW but they're probably not just for atmosphere.

I'm saying the show's creators are using the bird for that effect. They were perching peacefully (just loudly, but not aggressive), initially. Maybe magic is involved, but I'm not convinced the birds are hostile. /edit It is weird that the white-walker was focused on Craster's baby. Like, it can sense the baby was born of incest. Why ignore Sam? Imagine if all the white-walkers wanted to do was kill Jofferey. lol

I thought the point was that the crows were expecting death soon and thus a feast.

Maybe they figured that he doesn't need it anymore, because they know his story and simply assume he won't be encountering any Whites anymore.

He was standing next to the fucking dagger, not like he had to even walk, he had to bend the fuck down... There is no competent human being that has any intelligence that would simply not bend down to pick up the dagger then run in fear. Who said anything about that dagger being the only thing that can kill white walkers? Sure, given the scene it seems like a plausible conclusion, but expecting him to see the WW disintegrate and then immediately realize that the dagger material possess magical properties is plain stupid. All this while being in total panic mode.
