I've re-read single chapters since my first run through, but not the entire series in linear fashion, and reading this thread makes me want to. The books on tape are amazing too. I'm going to re read it in English soon just because GM's linguistic usage is so clear to understand and appropriate for what he wants to say (and I prefer to read the "real words" the author has written). Referring to the whole discussion and hate war because he hasn't released his book for five years I can only recommend the following article: http://www.nerdbloggers.com/nerdbloggers/2010/1/25/in-defense-of-george-rr-martin.html . I also sent it to him via his blog and he apparently read it and thanked me for the link. I don't know, the book series may be a matter of taste, but to say the series sucks - like phexac - in my eyes is a sign of inferior intellect :O If you knew how much time and thought GM puts into every sentence, into all the tiny details he has to consider among the various characters (with a story of this magnitude and complexity it's incredibly difficult "to keep it all together") and if you knew what an intelligent and perfectionist person he is, saying things like "devolves into this ridiculous junk with too many characters and plot lines that no one cares about." as if you were talking about Twilight is just plain pathetic. There is a reason why he hasn't released his book the last five years and that is because he build up the story very carefully, he created a world that appears authentic to the outside viewer/reader and now he is at a level where, when he adjusts one screw a tiny inch, thousands of other tiny screws need to be readjusted as well. It all needs to fit together and mustn't fall apart towards the end - that's the hardest part.

I feel it has improved my language quite a bit (as a non-native speaker), and there are certain expressions and subtle nuances that surely have lost their appeal with translation. As for the other part of your post, out of modern written works, even though it's fantasy, this book came closer than any other (maybe with the exception of the original Dune), at least in my somewhat limited experience, to older, esteemed works of literature accepted universally. I'm quite sure that if George Martin had put his mind to writing something in a gender considered more serious, he would have been a very memorable writer. If people do not appreciate these books, I'm quite sure they do not fully comprehend the depth of all the psychological layers found within literally ten or so characters, as well as the subtle philosophical points concerning religion, society, and most of all human nature.
