It's explained in episode 7. In the old days they were trying to keep the clans clean, so there was a lot of incest.

Thats the targaryan-"theme"
Jaime and Cersei, well, they are twins, they shared the motherly womb, and have been as close as possible ever since. In the book early on their relationship as kids in their childhood was described as inseperable. Even experimenting sexually in the early ages. Guess they just came to believe they were made for each other (certainly intensified by the tolerated incest of the targaryen-family, and adopting that reasoning) and continued to live that way.

Well I have read the books and I still think he would be a good ruler. Anyway this thread is about the tv series not the books.

Oh I kind of interpreted what was in the episode as a kind of common thing happening in many of the clans. That many of the clans were trying to keep their blood clean so incest happened.

Nah. Only the targaryens wed their siblings.
Though some kind of mild incest does seem to be common in the westerosi-culture.
Tywin Lannister, their father, for instance has married his cousin, Joanna. But that seemed to be rather common.

Episode 7 was really good, left some nice cliffhangers. I really dont have a clue whats going to happen with this series but thats a good thing. Anyway was Gregor brought to the Kings Justice? They kinda glanced over that unless they say something next episode.

Those kinds of people make the worst rulers; though they unfortunately tend to be good at gaining rule.

In the book Robert had it sealed with witnesses, not that that did any good later.

even today marriage between cousins is not forbidden. So that's nothing " they did in the middle ages"

Still doesnt make it common.

I'm sorry, we're talking about the books still, dont we? I've never even remotely made any comparison to the middle ages.

even in the books it's not common to wed your cousin

You don't know what happened with that at this point in the story. You will get to know what happened in the future sometime.

I have to say that I gave the series a chance after I saw Bean he was sort of the main figure, at least for now and since its made by HBO. IMO Bean is an underrated actor.
I was REALLY excited this last episode. Amazing is all I can say.

I dont know if i agree with that or not, but he is clearly a very good actor
