Sorry for the early bump, but I just noticed something while rereading the manga.
Yamato trained Sai. I thought Yamato from the Anbu had nothing to do with the training of the Root, that they met for the first time when their team gathered to capture Kabuto (shortly after the timeskip), but seems I was wrong. The reason is that Yamato has the mask that Sais teacher wore a few days earlier, as shown on the pages below.

I thought it was an interesting observation, although it´s irrelevant now, with Sai back as a very minor character, and Yamato more or less dead.

weird that the hairstyles don't fit though. But cool fact, didn't know that before although I'm too lazy right how if it's just the normal anbu mask design. ( probably not cause they got a few different ones)

i dont think thats enough info to really say for sure the mask is probably more for rank then identification

Nice observation. I did never understand that page where Yamato's mask lies on the table and he mutters to himself. Just thought Yamato was weird.
I assume he cut his hair when he was assigned to team 7. Would be kinda awkward when he is recognized because of his old hairstyle

At this point it's surprising how Minato hasn't seduced everyone in the Naruto verse.

A couple of things:
1) Sai refers to the ANBU who delivered his mission as "sempai". As far as I know, "sempai" doesn't necessarily refer to someone who trained you, as much as it does someone who is of higher rank(?) than you. Thus, the ANBU who delivered his mission is simply of higher rank. Students generally refer to their teacher as "sensei".
2) When Yamato is first introduced in Chapter 284, his ANBU mask is different from the one that is in the page you listed. I'm not saying he couldn't have changed masks in between, but I would count it your arguments.

2.4) Assuming chapter 285 occurs after chapter 284, Yamato would have to be wearing a wig in chapter 285 during his supposed rendezvous with Sai (again, I'm not saying this wouldn't be possible, just pointing it out).
3) The ANBU mask on the table in chapter 286 could possibly belong to Sai (or Sai is just in possession of the mask that the delivery guy had for whatever reason). Yamato planted tracking seeds in the team members' belongings, which would explain why he's messing with it.
4) Don't quote me on this, but doesn't Danzo train all the members of Root/Foundation?
