The anime has had more fillers than story episodes. They are going to ride the naruto gravy train for years to come until it ends in a horrible mess like dragonball z. I understand that the shadow just changes shape and follows Kakashi, so when Kakashi gets close to Zabuza, the shadow only has to extend a little bit more.
