Goten and Trunks are super Saiyan and ss3 when fused. They can fuse for half an hour which is like two thirds of the tournament. Yet they're not in because they're kids. The selection of fighters for this tournament makes no sense. Better to just accept that fact and enjoy the fighting.

For me it kinda makes sense. I rewatched the gotenks part of the buu saga last week and I do think they would have been useless in the tournament. The first time they fuse they go without SSJ and get pwned by Buu. Then With SSJ things go sightly better. SSJ 3 vs super boo is a joke of a fight. Yep, they are strong but they are way to cocky and make a lot of mistakes. They have 0 sense of strategy, Ki control, and honestly the way the character is written is no good for a serious fight. Furthermore, If trunk and gotten get kicked then you end up with one kid, with the very same drawbacks as gotenx, but without it's power. Of course, they could have written a more mature Gotenks as a few years have passed, but they are frozen in time, as Trunks should be a teen now, older than when gohan beat cell and the same age the future one was when Future Gohan died. So yeah...

Roshi was indeed fan service, but they explain it during the tournament: He trained a lot for it and instead of fighting strong fighters he was there to do away with tricky ones, basically Mafuuba'ing everyone he could (and using hypnosis and stuff).

They wanted to sell it as "the tournament is more than simply about who is stronger" which I think they didn't do very well, but that was the idea.

About Vegeta getting trhough destruction energy, In my head it's because even though it was desctruction energy, Toppo had to hold back to not erase someone. We see how with him holding back he could erase rocks and stuff, but not frieza, so that gives us a hint that Ki has some way to make you more resistant to hakai. Obviously not a full power Hakai like Bills did to Zamasu.

We saw Vegeta "destroying" Ki blast with just his ki, similar to Jiren blocking ki blast with his Ki in the special, so there's a precedent. Not only that but he is using God Ki, so probably that's even better.

Finally this is my assumption but remember how Frieza made a hakai go to waste by throwing a rock? Hakai destroy's anything it touches, but it also destroys itself in the process. What if Vegeta, by concentrating his Ki on his hand, made the hakai be destroyed by getting in touch with his Ki, and this made it so the hakai never touched his arm, so he just outputted more ki and punched him in the face?

I dunno, the scene where Frieza threw the rock and somehow blew up the Hakai Ki bumped me. If a GoD is able to surround themselves in the ki, to the point that energy attacks are vaporized and pass through them, why would a rock do any better? Why would it not just disintegrate and do absolutely nothing? It would have been more believable if Frieza had used the rock to distract Toppo, rather than somehow neutralizing Toppo's destruction.

I think that's because when they use the destruction energy to sorround themselves they are using it as the aura like the ones SSJ have, where it is constantly outputting ki around them. That way even though the hakai energy is destroyed when touched, it is rapidly replenished, whereas in the big Hakai Balls it's a conscious decition to output the ki in your hands and create a big ball which you aren't constantly replacing, unless it's like a KameHameHa.

Although we might be thinking too much about it.

Well that's what I'm always trying to be aware of. The writing they've set up for Super, and their commitment to it, is pretty intermittent. Half the time I can't tell if some weird moment was a bit of subtlety that should be read into, or if the storyboard for that episode just turns out to be unreliable. More often than not in this arc it's been the latter. I think in general they're consistent in the idea that destruction energy isn't strictly better than any other ki - or god ki. I tend to be of the mind that it simply has different properties, while also being very strong. Even then, the rock moment seems to just be an unreliable one.

It did state in the recruitment episode that Roshi was training in secret (Goku thinks it when fighting Roshi when he became "possessed").

Headcanon for me is that Roshi has spent nearly his entire time on Earth in the time chamber since Buu

He's about 86 years older than he was at the end of the Buu saga lol

He drank that shit that prevents him from ever aging, so may as well just train in the time chamber. Infinite time chamber time + infinite natural life = GG.

You know, after all these years I still can’t say for certain if that whole “never aging” thing is a joke or not.

Don't they directly state he drank from the holy grail or whatever? I distinctly remember them talking about how he's actually immortal

I don't remember that, but then again I watched Dragonball some 10-15 years ago. Seems cool tho, so I'ma roll with it. That makes Roushi this old, wandering sage, roaming the Earth in search of only the finest poontang. Only in Dragonball.

Yes, but there were some statements at other points that implied it might not be 100% serious. It’s been a while since I watched that part of DB though.

I could have sworn it was super solidified it in either Super or late in DBZ. I thought Baba and Roshi chatted about it.

Here we go. Classic Roshi.

Ah yes. “Tainted bird seeds.” Makes it look like something of a joke.

There was also something in the King Piccolo arc regarding his immortality, right before he actually dies doing the Mafuba.

Immortality as in not getting old.
He is over 300yo. Karim states that he trained Roshi before Goku, and that was about 300 years before Goku.

What about Mercenary Tao, since he's Crane Hermit's brother? Makes me wonder about the age of their parents and when they had each child, or if Tao's just doing a better job at maintaining youthful looks than his brother, Roshi and Baba

I think this line of inquiry would make Akira Toriyama start sweating.
