Do you have a link to amazon or something? My nerd pride may take a hit not having known this. I saw this one, but according to the comments it doesn't have the uncut ones.

From the same comments:

If you want the trilogy set that contains both the SE and the unaltered versions but no bonus features, make sure when purchasing from Amazon, that the picture is a picture of Darth Vader and Luke clashing with light sabers and the box has a lot of blue coloring. It also says IV V VI along the bottom.

You want the 2008 release. Just torrent it?

To anyone talking about how great the special edition was: watch the difference between the Vader/Palpatine conversation in each. Or just watch the fucking special editions. Hey look, a random CGI animal. Wow, 90s CGI was shit. Oh look, that's a believable effect: oh, it's a model painstaking built in the 70s and then filled with explosives and blown to bits. The Jabba's palace song is the worst--the scene becomes unintelligible and tonally completely off.

I get why most of the bad stuff is in there--CGI was new and exciting; the prequels meant they were trying to get less mystery in ESB; who wouldn't want to write a goofy cantina song for a Star Wars movie? But then there is the bad, plotbreaking stuff. Han shooting second. Luke's scream on Cloud City (added and removed several times). Vader's "Nooo" in the Blu Ray.

But in all seriousness, is there a way to legally purchase the OT unaltered?

I've never actually watched anything earlier than the 90's special edition, so I can't really hate on it because that is Star Wars to me. Granted, that Jabba song and dance DOES sit very weirdly, as though we suddenly turned Star Wars into a musical. Does it represent the decadence of Jabba palace because it's just such an excessive inclusion for so little story or character progression

But I very much dislike Vader Nooo and a Wild Hayden appearing in the much newer releases. That Vader, Palpatine, Skywalker scene worked so well before, it really didn't need tinkering.

I appreciate the time they put into the models, but as far as the movie goes I don't really care. A thousand Egyptian slaves could've built that model. If it still looks jerky, jerky it will be.

On the subject of the special editions, else seen the Adywan movie (someday maybe movies), A New Hope Revisited? He put in some serious work in that movie, cleaning up edits, making a few additional scenes (Death Star starting out over another planet surrounded by Star Destroyers, speeding up the Vader vs. Obi-Wan duel with the Episode III dueling music on top of it), and he's going even more ambitious for Episode V (down to rebuilding sets so he can reshoot certain parts), as well as the other four movies sometime in the future.

No disagreement. My point was that all the shots done with models in the OT look great, and most of the 90s CGI isn't at their level. Modern CGI is as good or better than models, but it took a while for it to catch up.

The early 2000s CGI was done really well though. I feel like the only discrepancies came from when the actors couldn't quite interact with it because they didn't know what was being generated in front of them.

2008 limited edition box containing 6 DVD's - 3 being the SE versions and 3 being unaltered copies from the laser discs (quality isn't great, but that's because Lucas forbid to ever remaster or release the original theatrical versions, best you can get).

Check out this link: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Complete-Episodes-Blu-ray/dp/B003ZSJ212

Scroll down a bit and you'll see all the SW releases. 4th of November 2008 is the one you want (OT, not PT).

I still love the space battles from RotJ and rewatch it on youtube every now and then
But holy hell, there are so many continuity errors in this thing. Why is grey leader the same actor as Red 2? Why did they use a female actress for red 3 (right before she got shot down) but then voice over her with a guy's voice? And then use green leader's actor to respond? It implies that he was flying the y-wing that took down the two tie interceptors

The little things =(

each of your points can be applied to the original trilogy

Especially the point about there being 90% CGI in each shot...

To be fair, the OT is really hard to find without the 90s updates and re-releases. These all had pretty awful CGI replacing most of the puppet work and some practical effects from the original release. I don't think that they have ever released the original cut since the 80s, so most kids growing up on TL saw the song of the Ewoks, and the force ghosts, and the awful Jabba's palace dancing.

The original Ewok song was worse IMO

The Ewoks in general were shit.

Yeah, that scene with Leia and the rations was not endearing at all and don't even get me started on C3-PO doing all those awesome Star Wars sounds.......right?

C'mon now.

I liked the Ewoks. Nice little "strength in numbers" story.
