It's pretty hard to make this movie worse than the prequels, so yay I guess?

Why are the terrible prequels discussed as if they are something relevant?

Because there are signs that the "new" movies go in the same direction. And besides a irrelevant cast there is nothing else to talk about.

Could you tell us a bit more about these signs? I've only read about the old cast returning but not much else

I'm guessing this is exactly what Lucas was thinking while making them lol.

Rofl! I was pretty young still when the prequel movies came out i didn't dislike them but even then i did notice that they traded acting for special effects.

To be honest I liked the special effects even better in the originals.
Not as over the top as in the prequels but so often much more awesome. Maybe because they weren't predominant and only used when the movie needed them but not all the time like in the prequals.
Like that first star destroyer you see at the start of a new hope, or the battle of Hoth, or the Death Star attack. Those are still awesome scenes
Somehow they managed to do so much more with so much less.

It's kinda like how they didnt really use special effects but everything really came off as real honestly.

It's kinda like how Godzilla(1954) was filmed using a rubber suit, but it came off as realistic looking because they knew what they were doing when they filmed it(using low angles, dim lighting) all to make him look like a giant monster.

pretty sweet how some of the older movies turn out better than the newer ones lol

There is something to miniatures done well that makes it seem a bit more believable sometimes. Even modern day CGI can seem a bit fake if you rely on it to build every scene.

I'm not a huge fan of Episode IV, but one of the things I absolutely love is how it flawlessly captures the atmosphere. One of the things I sometimes end up wondering about during a movie is how the actors/director accomplished what I'm seeing, and maybe what the set looks like. During Episode IV especially, I almost never had that feeling. It was hard for me to imagine the scenery ending just a bit behind the camera and then film crews standing around; if I didn't know any better, I would've thought the movie was filmed on location.

A very direct way of seeing this is watch even a little bit of one of those abominable "Special Edition" Star Wars OT movies. The CGI is embarassingly bad, but the model/suit stuff totally holds up. It looks awful anytime one of the new things wanders on camera, because we've gotten used to good CGI and can spot the crap, but the puppets and models (models that were lovingly made down to the last viewport, then packed with explosives and blown to bits) hold up perfectly.

Another thing worth noting is that it's also better for the actors if they have a set and models to work with instead of just green screen and CGI. Compare latest Star Trek movies with Star Wars ones and you can see the difference clearly (hell, even LotR used low-tech stuff for the most part).

Not sure what to think. Godzilla's director is directing the first stand alone Star War movie that is separate from the main storyline. Boba Fett Movie?

I like the idea of spin-offs from the main film storyline. The star wars universe is fucking huuuge and has such an awesome lore / setting for great narratives / films / whatever.

Look at some of the storylines they've come up with just in games, there just so much they can do with it all.

Ya. John Williams actually composed music for the video game, something he never really did for a video game. I am excited to see Star wars episodes VII VIII and IX

I've got high hopes and expectations for him. The music was definitely the best thing about the prequels.

Too bad they won't do the Thrawn trilogy.

Thrawn is one of the most awesome bad guys in the Star Wars universe.

I should have specified, I meant the space scenes. I felt like there was a real-life Star Destroyer and the film crew was actually shooting straight from the deck, as opposed to a constructed set, or in the case of outer space, a few models being adjusted a few millimeters at a time.

I was actually watching the opening scene on the Tantive IV when I posted this, so I forgot to make myself clear

Harrison Ford broke his ankle on set. Apparently he bumped it on a door or something. Someone explain to me again why the original cast is back?
