Let's see if he can screw up the Star Wars canon as badly as he did with Star Trek.

I was a huge star trek fan when I was a kid and I still am but honestly I liked the new movie. I think JJ will do well for Star Wars too. Some people get to hung up on small issues and refuse to just have fun and enjoy the movies.

You just described like 99% of the hardcore "fans" that big fantasy/sci-fi franchises tend to have. :3

Well, I think the movie company probably know that they have to screw up really bad to make the hardcore fans not watch. And even in the case of dragonball evolution some hardcore fans did watch it (which is unfathomable to me).

They should have just went with an outside choice. Who would turn this down, honestly? Why do we need Generic Mr. Idiot to direct it? Like, everyone would assume it's someone like Abrams, he's a given choice, but it's so stupid.

Let's just be thankful that Michael Bay doesn't have his disgusting hands anywhere near this. I don't like Abrams' story-telling, but when he is paired with competent writers he does a pretty good job. The only writer that I've heard of being attached to this movie wrote Little Miss Sunshine. That movie had some of the best sub-plots anyone could have hoped for, given the main story. As long as Abram's doesn't have much say in the script, and they get more good writers and a hands-off producer, the movie will be fantastic. The only true worry I have is casting. Hayden Christensen....

You're totally wrong in saying that Abrams can't do writing. Try watching Super 8, or all the episodes of Alias that he wrote, including the pilot.

I saw super 8, though I'm not familiar with which episodes of Alias he wrote. I'll definitely give them a chance.

Am I really the only one who is looking forward to this?
I am sure that it will be a great movie, considering the big ass budget it probably has - they will find good actors and a good director. I am not worried at all.

it'd be great to see abrams go into troll mode and somehow intertwine the star trek and stars wars universes.

Casting is a function of the director, so if you trust him, then it shouldn't be a concern. Hell, the casting in ST2009 was one of the least objectionable directing decisions Abrams made, so I don't have any real concerns in that department.

Also, the director always has some say in the script. Even just in terms of cutting scenes.

And while I agree that we should be glad that Bay didn't get his hands on it, that doesn't mean that we should praise Abrams for not sucking that badly.

I got your back on this one.

Although I don't see everyone's problems with Ewoks, they're just a combined version of the personalities of C-3PO and R2 and live in the woods. Nobody seems to have a problem with the Jawas or the little rat-thing that lives next to Jabba's asshole.

Their problem wasn't the existence of ewoks or that they were there as background characters like the Kowakian Monkey Lizard (Yes that's what those rat things are called) or the Jawas who were there for just a few scenes, but that the ewoks played a very important role and did some absurdly silly things. I mean, big teddy bears crush supposedly terrifying Imperial Legion? Really? What the fuck are they wearing that armor for if it won't even stop an arrow T_T. If the ewoks had just shown up, helped Leia out and then the movie moved on from there and they were done, people wouldn't complain about them.

The Ewoks are what brought episode 6 down from a potentially fantastic film into merely a pretty good one. There was a lot else the film had going for it. Episode 5 is pretty clearly the best of the six films, and Episode 4 is pretty clearly second best. Episodes 1 and 2 were mind numbingly awful for so many reasons it's hard to list them all. Episode 3 was nearly as good as Episode 6. I had a lot of plot issues with it, but it had some nice things going for it so it's not THAT terrible.

Delusional? No need for that; he merely has an extremely low maximum enjoyment threshold.

Even among people who like the prequels, there's nobody who likes them all equally. The only way that can happen is if you don't recognize that some good things can be better than other good things, that your ratings scale runs out at 5 out of 10.

Ewoks and Jar Jar's dumb race were fail. Jawas are completely fine because they helped set the mood of Tattooine perfectly just with their very short screen time. Most people love 5 and 6 (6 maybe less so because of Ewoks) but I honestly think 4 was his best. A lot of things were understated when they needed to be and weren't there "just because."

Anyways I honestly believe Abrams will do a better job with it than Lucas has been capable of for years. At worst it will be equal to 3. It will not be nearly as bad as 1 and will probably be better than 2 as well. I don't get the pessimism because we've already seen the worst in 1 and it's over. It could only get better from now on imo, and that's not optimism, that's just knowing Abrams isn't a genius but he's good enough not to be that bad.

I really doubt this is going to live up to the hype which will progress now while the film is in the making and whether it will actually fit in with the other SW films.

If the force were caused by special cells in the body, then it would be possible to essentially manufacture force users. While it could explain why General Grevious was able to wield lightsabers, I don't know why either the Republic or the Empire tried manufacturing Jedi armies instead of using die-by-the-dozen clones and droids. I'm no Star Wars nerd so I am probably wrong.

I hope 7 is based off the already existing EU and not something completely new. It would also be cool to see movies based on the EU from the KotOR time period and Darth Revan sometime down the line.
