+ Show Spoiler + Stuff like Gandalf paying the necromancer a visit, for example. Also, the battle of 5 armies is barely described in the books, they're probably gonna expand upon that a lot.

Do you know how short 2-3 hours of a movie are compared to pages in a book?

You do realize every long, descriptive passage can be handled by a single frame that just shows the scene, yes? 3 is too much for The Hobbit, but I was under the impression they would add to the existing material - more of the battle, more of Dol Guldur, etc.

Of course the battle at Dol Guldur and the battle of Five Armies will take a significantly larger portion of time than they do in the book, but I'm still not convinced that 3 movies is necessary.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of things were cut from the LotR movies, like Tom Bombadil, which could easily add some more time, there may be other things but I can't recall them off the top of my head.

For sure, so much many different storylines all at once i think it would be hard to fit it in less than 3 Not to mention the epic proportions of the war scenes (and the most epic fight ever; Fingolfin vs Morgoth!)

I don't think I'll be dissapointed about The Hobbit unless they eff up Smaug, the goblin caves and the elves. It's pretty hard to live up to this, though: My breath... DEATH!

Well, for sure I don't think the three movies are going to be as long as the LOTR ones, prolly going to be like 1.5-2 hours max to accomodate the softcore audience. I agree with what ppl are saying here, they're just trying to squeeze too much content from a single novel. However, I have faith in Jackson and the producers. They have good actors, a high budget and, thank God, Michael Bay isn't writing the script. They're gonna make the tone more adult, LOTR-esque and they're definitely going to pepper it with some battle/fight scenes. Always been a huge Tolkien fan and I loved the way the LOTR movies were made so...I think The Hobbit ones are going to be pretty solid too. FUN FACT: Peter Jackson originally wrote the LOTR script for two huge movies because he didn't think he was going to get the budget for three. When he showed the producers, however, they said they wanted three movies so he did a speedy re-write. Maybe that has something to do with them deciding to make The Hobbit into a trilogy.

I don't care if the guy is after money. As long as the movies are true to the book, he can have mine and gladly.
