I was kind of worried at first when I heard this would be 3 films.. But after watching through LotR again this past weekend... I have complete faith in Peter Jackson. He's a boss. So Excited!
Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I'd strike the sun if it insulted me.

Tbh, there's more than enough material for three films in the hobbit, since they can make long scenes out of happenings that are just mentioned in passing in the book.

+ Show Spoiler +
Stuff like Gandalf paying the necromancer a visit, for example. Also, the battle of 5 armies is barely described in the books, they're probably gonna expand upon that a lot.

The ones saying 3 movies is too much are crazy.

Do you know how short 2-3 hours of a movie are compared to pages in a book?

Given the title for the second movie, I wonder then if they'll end with the death of Smaug and the implication that Bard will march on the Lonely Mountain. A fair amount of the second must be taken up by White Council stuff I guess.

You do realize every long, descriptive passage can be handled by a single frame that just shows the scene, yes?

3 is too much for The Hobbit, but I was under the impression they would add to the existing material - more of the battle, more of Dol Guldur, etc.

I'm really not so sure that I want to go there and back again to the theater 3 times. If I do end up going (I probably will), I'm going to be extremely critical of any changes, omissions, or other problems I have with these films.
Of course the battle at Dol Guldur and the battle of Five Armies will take a significantly larger portion of time than they do in the book, but I'm still not convinced that 3 movies is necessary.

I wonder how long the films are gonna be, all of the LotR ones was around 3 hours each after the extended material was added, if this is 3 movies that only last 2 hours each I can see them still being good.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of things were cut from the LotR movies, like Tom Bombadil, which could easily add some more time, there may be other things but I can't recall them off the top of my head.

Indeed, Silmarillion was amazing, could also be streched out to 3 films if he wanted to.

For sure, so much many different storylines all at once i think it would be hard to fit it in less than 3

Not to mention the epic proportions of the war scenes (and the most epic fight ever; Fingolfin vs Morgoth!)

I thought there were just going to do 2, I'm surprised they want to do 3! What I expect and pray for from this trilogy is serious acting (hardly any comedic shenanigans), really good script (hopefully with a lot taken directly from the book), amazing looking spiders and Smaug (with a DAMN good voice, like the cartoon one had), and from the trailer and diary thingers I believe they're going a bit "in-depth" with the dwarves, and making each memorable, which I think is good.
I don't think I'll be dissapointed about The Hobbit unless they eff up Smaug, the goblin caves and the elves. It's pretty hard to live up to this, though:

Wow, I was surprised when they announced it was going to be a duology...It's also weird to find out about this now, when they've already been filming for quite some time. Definitely news to me.

Well, for sure I don't think the three movies are going to be as long as the LOTR ones, prolly going to be like 1.5-2 hours max to accomodate the softcore audience.
I agree with what ppl are saying here, they're just trying to squeeze too much content from a single novel. However, I have faith in Jackson and the producers. They have good actors, a high budget and, thank God, Michael Bay isn't writing the script. They're gonna make the tone more adult, LOTR-esque and they're definitely going to pepper it with some battle/fight scenes. Always been a huge Tolkien fan and I loved the way the LOTR movies were made so...I think The Hobbit ones are going to be pretty solid too.

FUN FACT: Peter Jackson originally wrote the LOTR script for two huge movies because he didn't think he was going to get the budget for three. When he showed the producers, however, they said they wanted three movies so he did a speedy re-write. Maybe that has something to do with them deciding to make The Hobbit into a trilogy.
You mean I just write stuff here and other people can see it?

I'm pretty sure that the decision to make it a trilogy was made by and when Peter Jackson saw half way(more like near the end of the filming) that 2 movies won't cut it, I have a compelte faith in Peter in that regard. I do believe that if the company gave the green light for it to be 3 movies rather than 2 after all the buget problems they had prefilming is an indication about it, and that Peter convinced them into making it a trilogy with a bigger space to work with rather than 2 dense movies.

The Book that got me into SC2.. Well all things Sci-Fi/Fantasy anyway.
I don't care if the guy is after money. As long as the movies are true to the book, he can have mine and gladly.
