Was I the only one expecting (and hoping) this would have happened in the end?

Particularly on a forum where the central thing that brought everyone here was videogames with a sci-fi/fantasy slant, I dare say I'd call BS if anyone claimed that they didn't think that. We could probably quickly fill a page naming walk-on-water-by-freezing it abilities/spells from various games.
I'm curious about if someone else was in charge of this episode. It was not of the same grade as the rest of season 5 at all.
Here is hoping they keep the momentum through the usually strong 9 and 10. We already know that next episode will be the other place where all of this season's budget went with the pit and Drogon.

Red heads appear to be drawn to Jon Snow. A hint that fire is drawn to Jon Snow? I think so!
Jon Snow is a fucking Targaryen!
How subtle, heh.

So Ep8 was the episode with the least amount of source content and the most original show content. What went right here and wrong with so many other show only scenes?

What went right here and wrong with so many other show only scenes? 1. it had scenes that the book could have had (Jon visiting Hardhome personally, and taking part of the battle), and arguably it would have been better 2. It had scenes that the next books might contain, or somethin similar: Tyrion-Jorah-Danny interaction 3. It confirmed a book and show "theory", that Valyrian steel hardcounters Walkers (pretty much accepted as fact, but unproven this far) 4. Visuals and sound
compare this to other "show only scenes" which were predominantly: 1. in place of a much more subtle, layered and intresting book plot 2. could never take place in the books, cuz make no f-ing sense 3. the visual elements were obviously just inserted so people who dont care still enjoy it, instead of being a necessity

It was a pretty long scene too, so they didn't have the time to include Dorne, that helped

Also, as someone already mentioned, you can't be wrong if you include zombies. (And even better with Walkers, which are kinda like zombies, only much cooler.)

People in these scenes can act unlike the fucking sand snakes

It's the director's and the cameraman's job to make action sequences look good, and they very much failed with that when it comes to the sand snake scenes. Blame them, not the actors.
