I am inclined to think it might. Plenty of people came to like Oberyn a lot and I bet a portion of people will be ready to think that it is Tyrion's doom. It might be the best bet this season, but both e9 and 10 will have opportunities too depending on how they portray things. Nah... It's not the same as the red wedding or even the purple wedding. When you go into a duel of death, you expect one of them to die, especially in this series, when they randomly kill off favourite characters. The red wedding is much more unexpected: go to a wedding, everyone dies. But they don't expect them both to die. And they certainly won't expect Oberyn to die when his victory looks all but certain. But at the last possible moment he gets cocky and dooms both Tyrion and himself. I think the reaction videos will be great because people will be so stoked and then so devastated during back to back moments. I'm sure a few reaction videos will surface but not nearly as many as either the Red or Purple Wedding. Those two scenes had elicited such shock because they involved the deaths of characters that had been around for so long and because the likelihood of death at a wedding is much less likely than in a duel. Oberyn is a very likable character, but he's introduced late in the story and doesn't stick around for long so his death isn't too groundbreaking. I dunno about anyone else, but back when I first read through aSoS I had become so paranoid and frustrated after the Red Wedding I was about ready to expect anyone to die honestly. I knew he was a goner the moment he got within range of the Mountain to hack off his head ;; Also, I doubt the Mountain will die in the same scene. He'll probably be given a scene (ha, who am I kidding? It's the Moutain. He's lucky to even be seen this season..) in agonizing pain and then mentioned as being dead sometime later similar to the books. imo, the real "oh shit" moment still to come is Stoneheart. That's a pretty big oh shit moment but but as big as Tyrion putting a bolt through Tywin's bowels imo that is the biggest Oh Shit moment coming up! Definitely agree. Unfortunately I don't think that the duel will be that amazing for TV viewers because they haven't really introduced the Mountain and the Viper that well for TV viewers. They haven't said the words the Red Viper although they have hinted once that Oberon is experienced with poison. Maybe they will show that scene in the preview to alert everyone to Oberon's awesomeness and that is there way of foreshadowing the death but I'm not sure that they will. They could have announced that he is the Red Viper in several episodes previously so I think they may avoid the whole thing altogether.
It willm ake Tyrion v Tywin more unexpected but I am not sure where they will go with Tyrion chasing after Tysha. Maybe he will go off in search of Shae to find revenge. I think that is a slightly contrived storyline but it makes more sense for the Tyrion storyline than reintroducing another character that they haven't mentioned for a couple of seasons.

' Also, they have changed the actor for the Mountain a few times so I don't think that most TV viewers will make the connection, especially the connection that he is the Hounds brother. Unless they go out of the way to announce it, I think most show viewers will just assume that he is just a mercenary for the Lannisters. Once again, show viewers will probably just get that he slighted the Martells, rather than gaining the wider picture of what is happening. My non-reading brother missed the whole thing about Littlefinger being the Big Bad and effectively starting the whole war by killing Jon Arryn. Similarly I think they will miss the significance of this and I will have to explain things so that they don't get lost in the story.
Rant over

I believe Oberyn said that it was the mountain who killed Elia & her children, when he was telling Tyrion he'd fight for him. But yea, if you miss/forget that, you wont even know who the mountain is, just some big muscled man

And Arya has him in her prayers, so you could remember... but most viewers probably dont

My friends who only watch the show do not know the connection between the Hound and the Mountain and really don't know anything about the Mountain. I agree that the duel has not* been as well prepared as it could have been. However, I'm sure it'll all come together in the next episode.

They've mentioned it enough so that the people who care about the plot will get it.
A portion of the problems with the show's plot can be attributed to a need to meet a lower common denominator for a TV audience. Do we really need to lament that they do not aim even lower? If they took the time to spell things out so clearly to make these details evident to every non-attention-paying viewer then it probably wouldn't be a very good show.

It's also pretty weird that like 11 people have played the Mountain so far, and none of them look a lick alike, besides being monstrous.

Doesn't seem that weird to me. Finding actors of that size will be hard, finding actors of that size that look like the first actor will be impossible

not if you just keep the same actor

It makes one wonder if the production crew knew just how much more prominent the Mountain would be later on down the line when they cast him for the first season. Like, you would have thought they'd attempt to nail down someone who could commit to an extended production period. The Mountain's casting inconsistency is arguably one of the worst errors in an otherwise very well produced adaptation, all things considered.

The main stumble point I see is that final line. I can't help but doubt if he is going to deliver the one important/delicate line the character ever has quite so well as it deserves. Not that I'd have assumed so much better regardless of which actor of sufficient size they found, but IIRC the ones from previous seasons were career actors while this latest guy appears to have been chosen all for being huge (though ironically he is a bit shorter).

What the fuck am I watching, this Sansa twist
