I think the Dany chapters are a great way to see the rest of the world in SoIF and have it actually relevant. I'd be pretty disappointed if you heard about all these things outside of Westeros but never really got to see them. I think having her out there lets you see the history of the world first hand, as well as gives a reason for a lot of people to end up over there. I wouldn't have stuck with the story if it was just Westeros.

I mean seriously, after Drogo, Vis and Mormont all went away she was left with a bunch of "oh this guy is meant to be really powerful" and it was just ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Bran's chapters are just what the The Reeds / Osha / Hodor Scooby Gang is up to, a slow setup for what I hope is not but what feels like some giant deus ex storyline about to win them all.

it wasnt like cersei. at least in her chapters you get a sense of the massive amount of bitch slapping that goes on. in slavers bay its just dany playing at queen where the only people she needs to appease are the ones with the big army outside her gates, pretty simple and she still doesnt know what to do, makes you appreciate cersei more.

Westeros politics are really interesting because you get to peek in at every faction, and find out what all of them are after, and see decisions made in one end of the continent having some butterfly effect in the other end.

On the other hand most of the chapters of the Iron Islands were a bit boring, filled with characters I didn't really care about (except Asha and Euron) and seemed to take too much place in contrast to their importance for the whole story so far. Tbh to me Dany seems much more connected to Westeros than the Iron Islands, through her importance, through connecting characters, through revelations about the history...

Tbh to me Dany seems much more connected to Westeros than the Iron Islands, through her importance, through connecting characters, through revelations about the history... I felt the Iron Island chapters fit in nicely. They are connected to the continental war due to their attack on the North and raids on the South, connected to Sannis since he captures Asha/Theon, they are connected to Danny through Euron's/Victarion's quest, and they have their own subplots and mono-graphic chapters like the Kingsmoot or Dampheir's to get a feel about how they are. They are also the weakest country by far, but it's shown how much they can abuse their one strength and the turmoil. The only chapter that annoyed me was Asha's, when she and her lover slews down like 30 battle hardened northern warriors who just ambushed them. I mean seriously, i get that it's fantasy and the heroes are buffed up, but come on.... Like Victarion, who's glorified as one of the strongest men and best fighter of the realm, in his own element, a ship to ship fight kills like what, 6-7 soldiers? The only other instance i recall when a battle was that unrealistic is Tyrion's rampage with an axe

Just wanted to point out that this was my absolute favorite character introduction ever. The Reaver. Like how after the fight he asked yo, that captain of them fought bravely, did anyone happen to fish him out of the water? No? Oh well *shrugs* Victarion fanboy over here.

However, there was always a mild disappointment when I turned the page and didn't see "Davos" in bold.

Davos is cool and I get the sentiment, but I can't let this little cult of personality go unchallenged. Barristan, Aero, some man who once used the alias Jaquen, possibly Varys (they are about tied), Littlefinger, Grey Worm and probably about every redshirt unsullied have him on both counts. Show Stannis surpasses him in both measures too. I understand disqualifying Grey Worm and the other unsullied. I would understand disqualifying the small council types for not being a combat oriented badass, but then Davos wouldn't count for much of anything along the lines of badass either. The bottleneck on that list is the mild mannered bit. He isn't really very badass. I almost had to include Missandei, Sam and Luwin considering the sort of things that make Davos badass(-ish, depending on the precise semantics). I'd have to include a couple of the sand snakes if keeping a docile outward demeanor counted for mild mannered.

If there are less pansies throwing a hissy fit because he's not spending his time kissing puppies, then he's a Gregor or Ramsay in their minds.

I enjoyed just how simple they were because they lacked the connections to King's Landing and focused purely on the Ironborn and their lives. The Greyjoys aren't the most fascinating characters, but they have their purpose, and have a nice connection to everybody other storyline, which brings that full circle aspect to the characters. Ahh fuck no dude! I loved alot of Victarion chapters. The imagery of Victarion jumping over the deck of his ship in full plate mail and having sailors from the enemy crew shy away from him. Even though they have him surrounded is some of the best in all the books. I also don't get how so many people dislike dannys chapters. They have alot of action and intruge. Bran however....Fuck i keep wishing that kid would die. He so fucking boring! Die you fucking crippled boring fuck!

I like the thinking behind his character, setting him up as a deus ex machina to save tyrion, so everyone expects him to win the duel, and even letting him get the uper hand in the duel, then having him die. Was pretty good story telling wise, i just get the feeling we missed the chance to see an incredible amount of interesting stuff, both past and future, from one of the most baller characters in the world.

Yup, that's exactly how I felt about him too. George Martin made him my favorite character in just a few paragraphs and then BOOM! He's dead ![]()
