I expected 'Easy money' to be nothing more than another swedish attempt at making good cinema but it wasn't all that bad. It's up there with 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' as one of the best swedish films produced in these past few years.
Now it's not a great movie but it's well worth a watch.

I am sad to see this thread had degraded from the likes of Moon, Man from Earth, The Legend of 1900 OldBoy to Disturbia, I love you man, Equilibrium and Bring It On.
I am sure that the OP did not intend to make this a name-your-fav thread. He was asking for powerful movies that get overlooked by the garbage that get so much ads nowadays. Please read the OP before you make post in this thread please.
My own recommendation would be:

North Face: about two German mountain climbers trying to be the first to conquer the Alps.
Farewell My Concubine: This movie is obviously not hidden but about ten years old and Chinese made so I thought I would mention it.

Knocking on Heaven's Door

Two young men, Martin and Rudi, both suffering from terminal cancer, get to know each other in a hospital room. They drown their desperation in Tequila and decide to take one last trip to the sea. Drunk and still in pajamas they steal the first fancy car they find, a 60's Mercedes convertible. The car happens to belong to a bunch of gangsters...

You know.. I saw Social Network this weekend and I admittedly had some reservations about it. The reviews I read were good, and my friend said it was good... and it was! It's just that it's strange when you think about "the story of facebook" you'd imagine it would be really dull. It's like if they made a movie about how Mcdonalds started up you'd probably be like... what it's a documentary or something? But yeah, it was interesting and really made me think about certain issues, even if some of the truths were spruced up for theatrical purposes. I think it's worth seeing.

I dont know if anyone posted this movie buts its a semi biography-ish

Bronson

It's about the most expensive prisoner in england, just gotta say this guy is a nut.

P.S. Give me a PM or something if you enjoyed the movie. I haven't met anyone thats even seen this movie, so it would be nice to know if anyone else enjoyed it as much as I did.

This is defiantly one of my favourite movies of all time!

OP here.

The thread is pretty much what you make of it. I never really had a plan with the thread other than getting people to suggest some good films for me. I live in the UAE, and don't own a TV. So I see no commercials, no trailers, no magazines. I rarely go to the cinema, and other advertising is low penetration if at all existent. I used to just look at the latest films on IMDB or something, and I also watched films from top lists such as IMDB's top 10 Sci-fi. But after watching those I was left with nothing but the main stream rubbish.

Which is why I started the thread. I wanted to find some more films, that I hadn't scene. Which is why I specifically asked for hidden and surprising. I asked for hidden because well, they're hidden so I wouldn't have heard of them. I asked for surprising in case I over looked a more main stream film that actually turned out to be good.

But the thread is for any one to interpret. For me, pretty much anything isn't mainstream because I don't get to hear about movies here.

Anyone can post anything I guess, and it's up to each user to get what they want form the thread. If you're after powerful cinima, then there is movies in here. If how ever you're simply after a film you wouldn't have heard of that isn't terrible and will pass a couple hours and mildly entertain you, then there is certainly that as well.

Hot Fuzz:
My all time favorite. This is simple hilarious. Great camera shot, pace, dialogue, story and action.

Top Secret:
Very funny. Reminds me of the Simpsons type of humor.

Rat Race:
This movie is light. There is one scene/sequence though that is possibly the funniest scene in any comedy movie.

Though these movies are not really hidden gems, I find they are not mainstream popular either. Hope it can fit this thread just ok ^_^

Thanks everyone from your collaboration too. I have rented 10 movies so far based in this thread and counting. I liked them all so far.

I'd like to suggest you this movie

Slayer by Ed Peduzzi.

It's an astoundingly good movie realized with a extremely low budget (800 $) by Ed Peduzzi, a young aspiring director who filmed this during his college time, being at the same time director, director of photography, editor, and actor. He won the "best director" award at the New York International Indipendent Film & Video Festival.
I think he really needs some free publicity, cause he's really talented

Here are a bunch of reviews:

Churchill: The Hollywood Years.

Hilarious comedy (best watched drunk). It's just as the title describes, a joke US take on some WW2 events.

watched it the other day just because it was on. expected it to be HORRIBLE since every advertisement for it when it first came out was some mash up of stupid slapstick bullshit. had a lot of subtle comedy in it that was probably lost on half the 14 year olds that saw it in theatres.

quite good example of british comedy.

The Shawshank Redemption, one of the best films I've ever watched.

IMDB link

Also Infernal Affairs if you don't mind reading subtitles, much better than the knock off remake. The cover art doesn't reflect the film at all though. Looks quite dumb actually haha

Just as the poster above me just said, Shawshank. Such a completely fantastic film that gets overlooked by so many people.
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but even if it has it deserves more mentioning. City of God.

And last one is Leon: The Professional.

"The girl with the dragon tattoo"

Suprised this wasnt mentioned yet.

A suprisingly good norwegian detective/mystery show, with some truly memorable/disturbing scenes. Its like #205 on imdb 8.2 if i recall

just out on dvd last week, and hollywood is gonna remake it and as usual shit all over it remember what happened to the ring? lol

Just want to bump this for myself, watching this movie now and I'm flabberghasted at how good it is and saddened at the same time to see how hollywood will butcher it... Though if Emma Watson plays the chick... She says she isn't but there's too much gossip on the possiblity to discount it completely... But Emma Watson+butt_rape? ..... too much for me to handle. Just... too good... I wouldn't be able to hold myself in. I also bump it to maybe start a discussion over the quality of films I've been seeing from Sweden lately. I don't know if its just the burgeoning industry and fresh new talent and heritage to pull from that's making their films such a joy to watch but also the lines they cross that our film industry is all butt hurt over. Seriously, just cause the word fuck is in the movie doesnt make it Rated - R I'm tired of that shit, im 22 and can still see it but why?! I guess in essense, im getting pissed off that hollywood can't come up with fresh new ideas and they just steal their shit from everyone else. Big props Sweden.

Bound by Honor. If you look past some of the cheesy stuff, it is a very good movie, really an epic crime drama.

It is a sign of strength to cry out against fate, rather than to bow one's head and succumb.
