Under the North Star (2009) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1145479/
As tradition to Finlands civil war history (white vs red) this is based on losing side (reds)

Akseli Koskela is the son of a parsonage crofter who, when he has grown up, finds it impossible to submit to the role of a faithful and humble servant required of him by the conservative upper class. Unlike previous generations who had no other alternative, Akseli begins dreaming of freedom and the right to his own lands, fuelled by the new and stirring ideologies of the time. The uncertainty of life strikes with force, however, as the parsonage reclaims most of the fields that Akseli's father has cleared out of raw marshland. The grim and irreconcilable bitterness caused by this makes Akseli take an interest in social issues. He joins the local Workers' Association, which is headed by the village tailor Halme. Halme's moderate and pacifist views don’t satisfy Akseli for long, and he joins the Red Guard, whose purpose is to claim by force that which is not given to the working class by peace: the right to the fruits of their own labour.
In 1918, Finland's bitter and bloody Civil War divides the people in two. Focused and strong-willed, Akseli is promoted to the position of company commander and, after the Reds' devastating defeat, is put in charge of a hopeless mission: leading a ragged refugee caravan, fleeing the victors' revenge, across the border to safety. Tens of thousands of Reds are executed, and the victors impose their whim upon the losing side, initiating a merciless cleansing operation, blinded by vengeance and unchecked by anyone.
Thousands suffer, perish and are killed in prison camps that don't spare even the women or children. Both of Akseli's brothers are executed, as is tailor Halme, along with most of Akseli's friends, who were members of the Red Guard in their home village. Akseli himself avoids execution by mere chance, and is pardoned after a four-year-stint in a prison camp.

Splice is one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure in having to watch.
It was just terrible. Story was predictable and shit, the acting and script was just deplorable.

Amores Perros, what a surprise for a mexican film !

My choice was a gem that I found when I was back in high school called "Smoke", directed by Wayne Wang and written by the novelist Paul Auster.
It is one of those movies that can easily seem boring at first, but the more you pay attention and the more you watch you find subtlety and beauty in every line. It is a movie about storytelling and friendship. Beautiful film that I put on in the background quite often. =)

Get ready for my HongKong Movie Reccomendations list Part 3:
- Fulltime Killer (2001) : Hitman in overdrive! Directed by Johnnie To, one of the great three HK directors. Starring Japanese actor Takashi Sorimachi, portraying a cold-as-ice killer and HK's robert de niro equivalent Andy Lau as his flamboyant counterpart killer. This is as HK-cult as it gets!
![[image loading]](http://www.unpurposed.com/blogimages/fulltime-764538.jpg)
- Mad Detective (2007) : In my opinion this is Johnnie To's masterpiece, at least in the detective-genre!! Absolutely stunning film about a Wacko detective with a very strange kind of "sixth sense". I cannot reccomend this movie enough!
![[image loading]](http://www.maddetective.com/inc/img/071_MAD_DETECTIVE_72dpi.jpg)
-Running on Karma(2003): Crazy action/comedy with a deep story and profound characterization, Directed by Johnnie To and superstarring Andy Lau! Winner of 2003 best film HK movie awards. Has a unexpected twist at then end, enough said!

Thats it for now gents. More to come later , enjoy!

Pandorum was incredible! i really enjoyed that movie... im a pretty big fan of dennis quaid and thought he did incredible, as well as the co-actor who led the movie.. unfortuantely i cant remember his name though

A "hidden gem" for me would be The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's a very slow burning movie, so not recommended to people who can't stand Terrence Malick movies or something like There Will Be Blood. But in my opinion this is easily one of the top 5 movies of this last decade with Casey Affleck maybe giving the best performance.
I actually loved Speed Racer. It's very love/hate (mostly hate) with people, but if you put a premium on visuals it's a pretty uniquely beautiful movie with I thought surprising heart.
Moulin Rouge! is another movie I stayed away from for the longest time but was finally convinced to see and it is now one of my favorite movies of the last decade.
And to throw another hidden gem out there, check out "In Bruges." One of the funnier movies of 2008 with some great performances.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking along the lines of Requiem for a Dream.
I don't remember hearing a word about it until I stumbled upon it watching some Youtube video. And it was incredible.

Under the guise of a "study trip," a group of students from a Junior High School are sleep-gassed on a bus. They awaken in the Okishima Island School on Okishima, an isolated, evacuated island southwest of Shodoshima. They learn that they have been placed in an event called the Program. According to the rules, every year, 50 third-year high school classes are isolated, and each class is required to fight to the death until one student remains. Their movements are tracked by metal collars; if any student should attempt to escape the Program, or enter declared forbidden zones, a bomb will be detonated in the collar, killing the wearer. If no student dies in any 24 hour period, all collars will be detonated simultaneously. They give each kid a pack with survival gear and a random weapon to equalize the playing field. Unless you know japanese, you have to watch it subbed, but I still greatly enjoyed regardless. Working my way through movies in this thread, thanks for sharing this one. I hadn't heard of it, and I enjoyed the film, it was interesting. Like Lord of the Flies on crack.

Yeah that part was pretty insane, she was awsome in Juno aswell, and michael cera wasn't even trying to be funny in that flick.

That movie is just sick, and in a really bad way. I have no idea what would ever attract people to this kind of movies besides curiousity. Let alone how sick you must be filming this.
