Enemy at the Gates is neither SURPRISINGLY good, or a hidden gem. It had lots of publicity and popularity.
Please try to stick to outlines.

Can someone give me the right subtitles for Let the right one in?
I watched this movie few years back and enjoyed it. I'm just thinking right now that I could've enjoyed it more if I had better subtitles. Thanks!
As for my recommendation, it has to be The Chaser (already mentioned few times in this thread). It's a great Korean thriller.

I agree with this, Equilibrium was one of the shittiest movies ever made. It was just trying to cash in on the matrix hype while we waited for Matrix 2.
As for good movies, here are some I liked. Most of these were far better than I expected them to be, although most of these mainstream picks have had a lot of hype.
I don't understand these were better than you expected? When do you expect a movie to be good? These are ALL mainstream, wtf?

A movie I had no expectations going into it four years ago, and came out more than pleasantly surprised. See for yourself, I can't really say anything about it without giving too much away... And the Gogol Bordello singer (Eugene Hutz) was also amazing. I'm sure this film received popularity, but in Canada I had to see it at the festival, where it quickly became forgotten.

Kin-Dza-Dza , for its time and considering it's a Russian movie (which I always find to be poor) was actually extremely fun and if you look at it closely... It has a lot to say about how silly society and everything about humanity really is... In a rather unique way. Lots of people hate it, lots of people love it. It can be as simple as you want, or you can look further into it and it becomes complex.

One of my favorite "Yakuza" movies of all time, and I watched it without knowing what it was out of boredom. Kitano is simply one of the best directors of recent memory, as his movies always seem to speak in so many voices that they're hard to take in from just one viewing. Tragic, humorous, serious, and light hearted all at once.... And each part is done well. This was the first Kitano movie I watched, and still my favorite.

Bring it On.. perhaps just a guilty pleasure, but I found these films to be amazinggg. Well, only 3 out of 5 of them :x

Just watched these series of movies called "Ong bak"
Its got the guy from the movie "The protector" who does all the mua thai (sp?) moves. The Ong Bok movies are just as brutal, if not more so.

Ok guys, I watched 'the man from earth' and K-Pax again tonight. To be honest, they are comically similar . Very much enjoyed both of them actually. I honestly think K-Pax is more emotional even though the end of the man from earth almost had me in tears, K-Pax did actually have me tearing up about 30 minutes before the end.
Anyway, all I have to say is that if anyone did enjoy the philosophy in the man from earth, you HAVE to watch every season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's basically 100x as much depth and thought about the topics discussed, with, I'm sorry to say, a lot more imagination. Much of the philosophy of the man from earth was standard 'new atheism' and 'enlightened open-mind-ism'. I mean I have no problem with it, but it was slightly laboured for anyone but the philosophical neophyte. If one actual takes time to watch TNG, the philosophy and imagination, and mental workout of some of the episodes, including some of the outrageously complicated moral dilemmas; far exceeds the scope of the man from earth. Although there was some great emotion, there's just as much in TNG, especially the final episode two-parter, which is just unbelievably mind-blowing. I'm also certain the biologist is in Star Trek, somewhere or another, I just can't quite remember where from.

Christiane F. + Show Spoiler + (picture was pretty big)
I do warn you. It has some very, very strong drug and sex scenes in it, involving a real 14 year old girl. It is pretty amazing, but will fuck some people up, and not in the same way as a movie like "The human centipede". Think those Montana meth adverts for 2 hours.
The Edukators

Stumbled across it a while ago. Really well done movie, worth watching to the end even if you don't really like it.

These movies are so mainstream and never overlooked that you haven't seen the majority of the ones labelled "Unknown/Overlooked/Indie"? Most people I know haven't seen the movies in the bottom half, hence the word "overlooked". What I mean by the good movies being better than expected: movie gets a lot of hype, I expect to enjoy it, I watch movie, movie has a lot more substance than expected.
If you are absolutely certain that every good movie is going to be good before it comes out and your expectations are never exceeded, there is the bottom half of my post with movies you will likely have no expectations for. I will not argue about your opinion on every one of these movies, but please, if you are going to shit on my opinion of good film, provide examples of your own superior taste.
