Circus Maximus are probably the most similar to DT, but the others are just great prog metal bands. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYc0I_RRKt4 Thanks a lot! I knew Symphony X beforehand, but wasn't that much of a fan of them, but I really liked the other two.

In some random thread (not this one) last year a random dude posted a youtube video of a song that was cool and now I can't find it. Description: Pretty sure it was some kind of gothic metal Around 10-12 mins long I think Epic song about life, death, sorrow etc Video was beautiful drawings of death related stuff Obviously I can't remember the artist or song title. I know this could be 100's of songs but maybe one of you will know the song I'm talking about. In the mean time I'll start trawling through this thread. Edit: P.S. My brain is telling me the band might be Spanish ...or Hungarian? maybe this helps Fuck yeah, found it bitches! Draconian: Death, come near me Full version Version with pictures

Yeah yeah I'm calling it metal, heavy metal watever but you get my drift. Honestly it hurts my brain. I can appreciate the musicianship behind it. And in some songs I hear I notice really complex melodies, experimental ideas or downright impressive singing/timings. Yet when I go to listen to it, it's just ROOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRR GHGHRRGHRRRGHRRRGHRR ROORRRRRRR BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM. So basically what I'm asking is...Is it like radiohead where you have to listen to it several times before liking it? Or is it just outside of my music taste? Maybe it's because I'm not a big fan of dark rebellious angry stuff. My favourite show happens to be My Little Pony. But not really. Maybe Anyways somebody explain this to me, and how to like it. :D

Because "metal" is a HUGE genre with lots of different sub genres nested within (speed metal, prog metal, nu metal, industrial metal, djent, etc etc). I think maybe you just haven't found the BAND you like yet. I for instance was mainly into grunge and alternative until I heard the right metal bands that eased me into the genre, and now at the tender age of 26 there is literally nothing that is too heavy for my tastes. There is just metal that I consider "shit" or "awesome" or in between. You enjoy complex melodies? Cool timings? You enjoy impressive singing? Can I suggest try starting with these guys:

You will never regret getting this album, i promise you, no matter what the cost. This album will get you into metal. Listen to the whole thing through. If you want to hear a band with absolutely perfect timing, look no further than the maiden machine. It is the epitome of perfection. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LArTxNnM77w&feature=related

Took me a while to like melo death, which is now my favourite but all those others that I listened to when I first got into it like metalcore it took me a little bit to get used to the vocals

Maybe Anyways somebody explain this to me, and how to like it. :D It's probably not your thing, if all you hear is noise (all those caps). And disliking rebellious stuff is probably not the best match, as most metal is anti-establishment. But if you would like to at least understand what all the fuzz is about, you have to give it a shot. Like any other genre, metal has a lot of really crappy bands as well as the good ones. All these different recommendations in this thread, may not be entry level material. If you really wanna give it a shot, try listening to some different stuff from popular metal acts from each sub-genre. Try to stay open minded when you put on a new album, and let it sink in before you discard it. Maybe even try reading some of the lyrics as well, if you're into that sort of thing. The lyrics don't really affect my opinion on metal, but some like it a lot. I did the same thing when I started to get into Jazz and Hip Hop. I basically got hold of 10-12 of the most classic albums of each genre and started from there. I didn't like everything, but found out which sub-genres i enjoyed. I did the same for punk, but realized that most punk really isn't for me. But at least I gave it a try. For Metal, a guide could look maybe something like this: + Show Spoiler + I'm sure a lot of people disagree - which is fine - we all have our own tastes and opinions. These are just examples. ***MAIN GENRES*** Classic Metal: + Show Spoiler + Heavy Metal: + Show Spoiler + Thrash Metal: + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z-hEyVQDRA Death Metal: + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEn9EPsBy_M&feature=related ***SUB GENRES*** Black Metal: + Show Spoiler + Prog: + Show Spoiler + Power/Groove: + Show Spoiler + Melodic: + Show Spoiler + Modern: + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSvFpBOe8eY Metalcore: + Show Spoiler + Hardcore: + Show Spoiler + Grindcore: + Show Spoiler + Numerous additional sub-genres exist. But I think the above are probably the basics. Some genres overlap of course.
