When this thread was started I KNEW to stay the fuck away from it because it would end up being 15% "this is an awesome song/cd" (helpful) and 85% "this is what I deem metal and here is why what you call metal is base, bad and actually wrong. Blah blah blah [elitism]" So fucking predictable and bad. TL has the most high-brow metal audience I have ever seen. Get over yourselves. This isn't fucking kpop where even the fans know it is terrible.

Lunatica is a symphonic/power metal band bordering on being poppy with female vocals as well.

Does nightwish/lacuna coil/within temptation count? not really proggy though ![]()

Fucking drunk after one of the worst nights of my life, and I seriously can't stop listening to them. Combined with Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree of all bands, Lykathea Aflame is seriously owning my ass right now. And I will check out Lunatica, thank you. Nightwish is ok, Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation do not count. Lacuna Coil is garbage (minus a couple good songs), and Within Temptation is just straight power metal...with a female vocalist...which makes them cool on their own, biut not what i was asking for. i love how the quality of my post degraded as it went on. I need to pass out. fuck.

It just so happens that about 95% of what I like is some form of metal or nu-metal. Categories / genres should not be anywhere near as significant as people are making them out to be. On that note, check out my new tune: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/273395

Thanks for contributing to the thread. I was amazed when I found this song was on Tony Hawk's Project 8. Really good mix of orchestral music and heavy metal. Some of the best I've heard and they really gel well together in this thread. Their other music is more experimental but still very good. More can be found at http://www.myspace.com/xaureliusxcorex. Their album should be arriving sometime this year.

First off, does anyone listen to metal while they are playing? I am pretty fucking slow with my hands, so I thought a nice, quick-paced death metal band would keep me driven. I ended up about 20% slower. But still I would rather listen to some metal than SC in-game music. It also gives me a good idea of how many minutes have progressed in-game since I have no sense of timing yet. I've been exploring different genres of metal for a while (and have had varying degrees of elitism), but I have to say the RnB/easy listening/Deathcore hybrid shit is awful! I listened to that Attack Attack video and wanted to stab my ears with a mechanical pencil that is sitting close by. Wow- the song sounded like a sampler for 3 or 4 different bands and all of them sucked shit. I don't even care that they are christian (which is an anomaly in the metal world)- being christian seems like a gimmick when a band is that bad. (It is another sad topic to discuss- why is christian music of any genre generally mediocre to begin with...) Anyway, here are a bunch of embedded youtube videos (hopefully)!! The metal subgenres represented vary widely, so hopefully everyone will enjoy something. Vassline - Assassin of Death. I thought I would start by posted a skorean band! Vassline are a fairly generic metalcore band, and while I have not heard their discography (or overly enjoyed much of what I heard), this song is catchy: + Show Spoiler + Fleshgod Apocalypse - In Honour of Reason. These guys are from Italy and play a style of techdeath "influenced by classical composition." That sounds pretty pretentious, but they have the chops to make such claims. This song is the album opener, and I recommend this whole album (Oracles) for starcraft play (it sounds great with marines rattling off their guns and dying)! Also, if you are dumb and collect CDs as I do, willowtip records is this bands label: + Show Spoiler + Zao - Praise the War Machine. Here is a nice, christian metalcore song. I actually love this whole Zao album (The Funeral of God), but haven't enjoyed any of their other songs. The guy has a beastly rasp. The album is conceptual (and dorky concept albums arouse a certain part of me): + Show Spoiler + Sentenced - Excuse Me While I Kill Myself. This is more of a heavy metal-styled band. most of their newer songs are depressing in the lyric department and have a swell, driving groove: + Show Spoiler + Rotting Christ - Athanati Este. While this awkward greek band has quite an offensive name, their music is quite palatable. Their modern releases are very epic in nature and are very rhythmic, but the album that this song is from is the only one that I am overly familiar with. They have a lot of operatic chanting and melancholic atmospheres spread throughout this album. Seen 'em live and I recommend the experience for any of you that has a chance. The guy's deep chanting voice is sexual: + Show Spoiler + Nachtmystium - Bleed for Thee. Holy shit, USBM!!11.. etc. These guys are from Chicago and are become more of a prog/psychedelic band with black metal textures as the years go on. Total Pink floyd worship on their newest album (Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1). This song is from an older EP and is my favorite release. Soothing outro lead: + Show Spoiler + Coffins - Altars In Gore. I am just getting into this japanese metal machine, but Coffins are groovy and heavy-as-fuck death metal. Their first album is very minimalistic in it's riffing, but they seem to evolving some (and writing catchier tunes): + Show Spoiler + Grand Belial's Key - Doves of War. No, I am not a neo-nazi. However, GBK are one of my favorite bands. I think one of their vocalists was into the NSBM movement, but the songwriter is just an asshole that hates religion. Anything off of Judeobeast Assassination or Kosherat is superb. The band is fairly mid-paced for black metal and is pretty rough around the edges. Their songs usually elicit a physiological response from my body: + Show Spoiler + Whitechapel - Ear to Ear. I love this whole Whitechapel album (Somatic Defilement). Their newer release was a step down. Anyway, if you hate "Bring Me the Horizon" style deathcore, you should listen to this song and know that the genre can have bands that don't suck. PS The last breakdown of this song is schweet: + Show Spoiler + Corrupted. I don't know what song this is, but it is mind blowing. Corrupted are a japanese sludge band that smother their listeners in plodding tempos and lung-crushing riffs. It's relaxing- I recommend scotch on the rocks and a lower wattage, non-fluorescent light bulb at night. This band usually has 20+ minute songs: + Show Spoiler + Arsis - A Diamond for Disease. Someone said that this thread needed more Arsis, and I agree: + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zsL93ifyeE and pt 2: Also, to the person that posted Gorod: have you heard their newer stuff? I love Gorod; they are truly underexposed. Also, this site is a great metal resource. They are truly, truly elitists: http://www.metal-archives.com/ Awesome, another hour wasted posting! I hope someone enjoys something from this! Cheers! Chris edit: had to mention Gorod

Unlike you I don't have to randomly suggest some band to have content with my post you fucking dip shit. Sometimes contributing to the thread consists of a callout. In this case a bunch of elitist pricks denouncing a bunch of people's preferences needed to be hushed or at least called out... so I did that. The discussion was had about 2-3 pages prior and it still continued so I did what I did. Stop being a fag and shitting up the forums with stupid posts like this one.
