Like, everything? He was together with Leprous or whatever the name of that band was and it was awful. They alone were bad and Ihsahn weren't making it really any better. After that gig some people even wondered if even coming back with Emperor in next year (possibility) could help him. I have lot of respect for him, but really, that concert was nothing else but plain bad.
Couple of recent listens:
Who are some people? After is considering by lots of metalheads to be one of the greatest albums in a long long time. He is a genius....I assumed you meant Ihsahn underperformed live but it sounds like you just aren't a fan (congrats you're the first metalhead I've ever seen make that claim!) D:
Some people I obviously doesn't know, but which were clearly disappointed after his gig. Yup, seems legit and all and I understand if you don't take it too seriously
He's a genius? I wouldn't say so. Yes, I'm not a fan of his work, nor Emperor. I respect what he has done, I like him for his philosophy and even sometimes enjoy some of his music. But, not a fan. Am I first to not like him? Meh, I doubt it There's too much music around, liking all the "cult bands" is impossible. For example, I strongly dislike "popular and kvlt" acts like Pantera or Megadeth. In my opinion, there are tons of better bands, especially in the underground. But of course, some of the popular bands I like may cause others to say some bad things about them, but that's okay - as long as we take it with distanse and knowledge that tastes are different.
Back to Brutal Assault - maybe try to find his concert on youtube, I bet somebody recorded it. I didn't like it at all, but again, avantgarde + Ihsahn isn't my thing too.
The funny thing about this post is that the term "kvlt" has recently taken a 180 to the point where it's mostly used by people to mock black metal hipsters (which are some of the worst hipsters I've encountered personally).
I will say though that I feel Emperor are a little bit overrated, but then again all of the "classics" in every other subgenre of metal are so meh...
Anyway, speaking of old school black metal:
From the Emperor and Enslaved split including the EPs Emperor and Hordanes Land.
Is Hipster just another way of saying Elitist? Just a more "hip" way of saying it?
Lol dude I swear I've met some people online who claim to only listen to obscure demo tapes by early 90s black metal bands that I personally have never heard of. The kind of stuff that would make Paysage D'Hiver sound like overproduced modern tech-death. And they denounce everything else as being trash, even the classics. Yeah...
I feel that goes a little bit beyond just "elitist" but maybe it's just me. :/
Better keep such "kvlt elitists" in their basements. Guess we can all agree with that? I like undeground movements, they're lot of gems in there (and utter shit bands too, obviously), but claiming such things is just plain stupid IMO. But hey, I'm not even 666% true - I listen sometimes to something that isn't metal! :D
On topic: currently listening to classic. Death - Leprosy. Man, this album kills everytime I listen to it. www.last.fm/user/Sir_OsaX/

And fuck yeah, early Unleashed and Entombed slays. \m/
Yeah but you don't like Ihsahn!? Early Entombed is indeed classic, haven't heard Unleashed myself though I should check it out.
Unleashed are right up there with Dismember, Entombed, Grave and Carnage. Really it's classic swedish osdm, no two ways about it.
Not as in-your-face as Grave, not quite as melodic as Dismember, with maybe a bit of a darker atmosphere than either. Really, really good stuff though. Some sick trems and great drumming within for sure. Vocals are really good too.
You can't go wrong with Unleashed's early albums, really.
Gotta say that as a big big fan of post-metal and occasionally doom metal as well, this was pretty awesome. Reminds me a little bit of a fantastic German band by the name of Omega Massif.

As promised, I present to you a massive old school thrash compilation. If you're looking to seriously get into thrash, or maybe you already like it and would like to discover some oft-overlooked gems, this is probably the place you want to be.
Feel free to follow me and "like" the mix (it doesn't benefit me in any way shape or form but I have reason to believe it might give it a bit more exposure on the site) and share it with all your thrash-loving buddies.
138 tracks (that's 69 bands with 2 tracks each, site rules don't allow for more than 2 tracks per artist) clocking in at around 11 hours, you don't really have to listen to all of it in one sitting and there's definitely enough old school thrash here to keep you coming back for more.
Guess I would know most of the bands in there, but wanted to check what were your choices and... is there a way to see the list of bands/tracks in that mix? Clicking skip just to see what's next isn't really the best way of doing it, but maybe I just don't see it :F
In topic, Vinterland is damn fine atmospheric black metal act. Shame they're no more, this album is just too good.

Oh yeah. Seeing them live again in a month at the Denovali Swingfest. Pretty hyped already! Since I rarely run into people who are into this post-metal thing - and it's just a roughly defined field - do you have any further suggestions for me? I'll just throw in names of bands I would associate with it: Kerretta, Russian Circles, Long Distance Calling ( Satellite Bay Album at least), Pelican, Bossk

There is not, but I'll list them in this spoiler in no particular order:

Well I'll just play it safe and start off with the usual suspects: Neurosis, Isis and Cult of Luna, just in case. Then I'd probably recommend Rosetta (at least their first 3 albums, haven't heard the latest one yet but it's been getting mixed reviews), The Ocean Collective (their album "Precambrian" above all else), Blindead are another good band.
And if the idea of blending sludgy post-metal with atmospheric black metal and shoegaze sounds great to you, then I'd also recommend a fantastic instrumental band by the name of Year Of No Light. They have 3 albums out so far; I haven't checked their latest one out yet but I know the other two are excellent.
The new Year of No Light (Vampyr) is a custom soundtrack for the 1932 silent film Vampyr. I don't have the movie so I can't really say if it's a good fit or not but I'm still intrigued by the idea.

I guess the most notable absentees that come to mind would be Annihilator and Venom but I was never a big fan of either of those so idk. :s
Still I think it's a sick line-up.
Thanks, really good line-up. Even few names that I just need to check out haha (well, you can't know them all).
But I have objection! There's no Atheist in here! Or you count them more into death than thrash? Also Gammacide is pretty sweet, their Victims of Science from '89 is good. Same for Intruder and their A Higher Form of Killing. Maybe you can add them for next version ;]

Again, solid stuff, right there.
Yeah I'd put Atheist and Cynic in the DM bin and they'll definitely be in the OSDM mix whenever I decide to make that. ^^
Intruder are good as well but I haven't gotten their album(s) yet. Gammacide I don't know but I'll check them out soon.
You're welcome ^^ altho I would put Atheist into thrash, but hey - that's the problem. There are TONS of great thrash/black/death bands that are mixing things up so much it's hard to say which genre prevails.
Bought new Summoning. Oh boy, Old Mornings Dawn is already looking damn good. I love the fact that you need to listen to it a solid amount of times before even attempting to create an opinion x]
