Does anybody have tips to keeping your mmr going? I'm always bouncing between 4.8k and 3.9k every month, its very annoying. I basically have to mid only and steamroll when it gets that low, but I generally just pick good heroes otherwise. Recently I've gone back down to 3.9k after many "unwinnable" games, either getting roamed on constantly with my team losing to solo lanes, or their carries getting more fed than me. Example: last game was 3v1 mid against me and their offlane antimage won against our trilane.

If you actually care about what your mmr just play ta/storm mid and grind it up till you are satisified. this was told to me by 6k+ mmr players. i played 2 matches with ta pre ranked and so far 100% wr in 13 games, even with all my others lanes feeding ta can still make a huge impact and change the tides. storm is also great but just harder than ta and i was awful at both. gonna do some storm training once i have more time to dota.

if somebody ninja picks a mid just chill and pick some counters to enemy heroes. doom is almost always good.

I think its much better to master a hero or a certain amount of heroes if you just want to gain mmr by being a good player and not by picking ezmode heroes. Snowball mids are good for gaining mmr when your enemy is much worse than you but there are other heroes to do it reliably although not as fast. An example of my winrates:

Wraith king - 80% - 20 games
Lycan - 70% - 34 games
Doom - 70% - 27 games
Shadow Fiend - 65% - 52 games
Earth Spirit (my best hero) - 57% - 21 games
Ember Spirit (probably my second best hero) - 56% - 46 games
Nature's Profit (most played) - 55% - 96 games
Storm Spirit - 45% - 50 games
Naga Siren - 43% - 42 games

I think this is pretty accurate, if you ever want easy mmr, the first 3 are your best bet. Shadow fiend is only up there for me because I played like 40 games in a row of him. However none of this addresses the main issue which is handling terrible loss streaks and I don't feel like having to pick stupid heroes just to get my mmr back.

that doesnt even apply to the poster above. he said he already picks mid to make his mmr jump from 3.9k to 4.8k....

edit after i saw his post above this one my advice is moot.

I don't pick mids all the time to jump my mmr to 4.8k I just said I pick them when it gets so low that the difference in skill is often big that I can quickly boost myself up, which around the 4.1k mark is usually when it gets that way.

Get your mmr back to 4.8k or whatever. Play unranked. Your mmr will stay at 4.8k forever problem solved.

I don't think you should worry about your MMR. Instead, worry about what you could be doing better in each and every game if you want to improve. Otherwise, just have fun!

The whole "pick high impact/snowballing mid hero to raise your MMR" is such bullshit. What it might do is to get you to whatever MMR your skill represents (see all the 5k player playing on 3k account examples) faster, but it wont raise it. Everyone seems completely set on the idea that playing high impact mids as opposed to supports is the way to influence the game the most. And disregarding whatever level of truth there is behind that idea (thats another topic), people seems to completely forget that it goes both ways too. If you've had a good win streak and ended up at a higher than your skill represents, you picking a high impact mid is directly bad for both you and your team and will more likely than anything else drag your MMR down (back to where you belong).

Yes, high impact mids wins games. But they also lose games, just as much. Oh god I cant count the amount of times we've been doing fine on both sidelanes but their mid is absolutely rolling ours and we end up losing because of it.

Put in other words:
A 4k player playing high impact mids exclusively might see his MMR fluctuate between, say, 3800 and 4200.
A 4k player playing random roles might see his MMR fluctuate between, say, 3700 and 4300.
A 4k player playing low impact supports exclusively might see his MMR fluctuate between, say, 3600 and 4400.

Numbers made up obviously, but the low impact player will be more affected by random win/loss streaks and occasionally he'll get carried several times in a row and end up with a higher MMR. The high impact player, who to a larger extent decides the outcome of the game himself, will be much less affected since as soon as he has a loss streak he'll be carrying his team and get his rating back up. But after a win streak he will also drag his team down because he is now playing a high impact role against better players.

Stop believing you get higher MMR because you only play mids/carries. And to all you who does that it might be a good realization for you to know that while you win a lot of games for your team, you probably lose just as many for your team too. If you think the reason you won that game as that super fat void was your awesomeness but the reason you lost the next game playing void again but getting owned was the terrible supports, you really need to think again and think one step further.

Imo: It's better to play mid when you are better clearly better than everyone else and just don't believe it.

But to climb I think it's best to learn and improve as a support. When everyone is around equally skilled then often times the supports will be the worst performed. Everyone knows how to play mid, but few has actually taken the time to learn to properly play support. 90% of my games is pretty much determined by the supports.

Until you reach 6k rating, I think. Above 6k is gets weird since you sometimes have to play with 4k rated people and then you often times are clearly better than your opponent. Which is when you should go mid. So unless you are 6k+ I think you should learn how to properly play support. Learn how to kill shit, not just sit back and ward. Killing heroes win games in pubs, not farming.

Then again, I think you can climb fine with all roles, just play what you find most fun. Support is the best to climb with but all works fine. Just have to make sure you pick heroes that kill stuff rather than farm a million years to come online when the game is already lost *cough* Tinker

Well I think with 0 delay you can just click it at their feet. But due to delay that doesn't work so you just have to aim slightly in their movement direction depending on how high ping you've got. Don't think it's any easy trick, just practice.

You could shackle them and shift-click the trap but that's not as efficient as the holding them in the trap.

I have an easier time hitting unintentional ward traps on allies (or myself..) than intentional ones on ennemies QQ

Actual question though, threads seems to be standard on Puck, and so far i biuld them myself as well without thinking much, but why? Your right clicks aren't that great late game, why not go phase for better laning? or arcanes for mana.

I find that whenever I'm losing a game that I often say to myself, "their supports are playing really well right now, ours are not playing at the same level."

While I enjoy carrying, I enjoy winning a little more, so I've found myself playing supports. Especially supports that have the potential to transition into semi-carries and still be effective. Being good at support makes or breaks the early to mid game and allows your carries to do well (even if they aren't the brightest bulbs in the box).

I think the best way to raise your MMR is to just master one or two heroes for each position. Remember to pick stuff that is good at ever stage of the game. For example, I don't think CM and Void are good heroes for pubs, but Earthshaker/Disruptor and Weaver are already better.

Probably people who play a lot in one go, and suffer/benefit from tilt/momentum.
