AP pubs are a completely different ball-game than captain's mode which is the primarily used competitive dota mode. You need to be flexible and you need to realize as a support what lane you should support and what lane you should ditch, if you're babysitting a bad carry player you should consider trying to help another lane instead like maybe setting up a kill for mid and trying to create space like that.
If you try to apply the logic and ways the professional players play in AP pubs then you're going to have a bad time.
"When the game starts going retard you just have to roll with it", right?

Exactly, it's the best advice you can give anyone playing AP or pubs in general honestly even without joking. If you're still trying to be super serious while your team is running 4-man with dagons you'll just have to join them and go 5-man, you might not have to build dagon as well but running 5-man instead of trying to do something on your own might just allow you to win even if you're not playing ideally
I mean i might be the wrong person to be giving advice since i usually don't play unless i have atleast 1 friend to play with and i'm rarely ever being very serious(Mid faceless void with aghs refresher best void) when playing unless it's ranked. I'd hate for AP pubs to become serious business only, that's what i have CM and ranked for.

Chaos Knight's ult confuses me quite a bit. The cooldown is long (140s), so it seems like you want to reserve it for important teamfights. His swap is a LOT better if his ult is already up, since the illusions basically surround them, but if you ult before engaging they may just run. The ult also makes you invulnerable for about a second, dispells debuffs, and disjoints projectiles, so it's very valuable to use it after the fight has already started.
Also, since they do 100% damage, the ult is perfect for burning down towers or ganking.
Basically what I'm saying is that the ult is so useful in all situations, but has such a long cooldown that I'm always afraid to use it where it would be useful. Any tips on use it intelligently?
|
Use it if you're going to fight team vs team or if you're near a tower. If enemy refuses to fight you, you take tower. You can also always Stun->Ult->Reality rift if you're on your own.
Honestly the best advice i can really give is, if a fight breaks out with both teams fighting with atleast 2-3 heroes it will not be wrong to use your ult in like 95% of the situations. Later on you might want to save it for actual important engagements and not just pick-offs unless it's a super important pick-off like the enemy hard-carry. But in the early and mid-game you shouldn't be too afraid to use it to fight near a tower, because if the enemy does run you just take the tower.
|
Use it only when you need it aka if your pushing a tower and using the ult would help secure the kill instead of getting it denied (since people are less likely to engage you with your ult up or you want to burst it before multiple tps arrive)
popping stuff like cks ult mainly just depends on your own decision making and judgement.

DotA is better than LoL when played properly, but not when the roles don't mean anything because you have any hero playing anywhere. I'm just going to stick with LoL unless I can find players who actually pay attention to the roles of the heroes they choose.
i feel this belongs more in the QQ thread as it's just basically a rant about what people already know haha

Just last pick if you're frustrated by team composition. Ambiguity just comes from inexperience, you can adapt your build and gameplay to this lina mid and roaming support bara.

The fact that you can make anything work in a pub game is what really attracts me to D2.

so im lvl 13 but yet ranked remains locked :D it says: More gameplay history is needed to make an estimate of your skill for ranked matchmaking. Please play more unranked matches.
|
My solution would be play more unranked matches, if you level up too quickly due to battle boosters or w/e then the system makes you play unranked for a little longer

Has anyone tried out Heaven's Halberd on Lina?
I think it could be a really good item on her as a 3rd-4th item, after something like Arcanes + FS/Blink + Bracer/Wand. It makes her way less squishy, gives a useful active, and since Lina has so much attack speed with Fiery Soul, you should be able to use the maim as well.
The buildup is pretty decent too, giving + strength and the maim once Sange is completed.
The downside is it doesn't let Lina cast more spells and it doesn't give mobility, so Euls or even saving up 1.8k more gold for a Sheepstick might be preferred in some circumstances.

Halberd's situationally fine on a lot of supports if you can get the gold together, the problem is that the buildup is kind of underwhelming because neither of the components are terribly good for her. A lot of times after those items you need a Ghost Scepter or similar for general survivability.

General question - seems like Clock isn't as strong an offlaner as he used to be... is there a direct reason for this or am I missing the mark on my casual observation?
|
clock is still fine in offlane/mid, it's just with the cogs nerf hes not as strong as he use to be. still very strong in pubs.

-How does playing against bots help with getting better mechanically?
-I would like to get better at last hitting, what would be a good way to practice without being a jerk on pubs?
-Is there a good way to practice pulling neutral creep? Again I don't want to be a jerk trying to practice mechanics past the laning phase in pubs but would like to get some good practice with part of the game I am missing.
|
playing against bots help when you're just starting out to learn all the skills and stuff can practice a couple other things too like lasthitting or efficient jungling but the bots don't really do anything
practice lasthitting and pulling in private lobbies. with cheats on -startgame starts the game immediately
|
Sometimes I like to go into games with 0 bots and practice the first 5-7 mins of last hitting, leave and start over if I'm doing too poorly. Its not super helpful, but helps me get in the flow of the game
|
There's a dedicated last hits practice scenario under 'Play' -> 'Learn to Play' : 'Training' -> 'Last Hit Practice'. It puts you against a bot, which behaves passively for melee heroes, and keeps track of your high score. It also tells you when you were within your random damage margin for making a last hit with a 'close' notice.

Thank you all.
Are there many more different mechanics that can be practiced in a non-competitive setting? Spell dodging and Faking spells seem to be important in the higher level matches.
