I play at 5k mmr level for team mm. In theory, I should be able to climb solo ranked matchmaking even when playing All Pick right? I am a support player. What are good strategies for picking? Any other good supports out there that play AP in ranked solo? I just don't want to play CM in solo. I feel it is same for both teams anyways. No one? ![]() I am curious if AP or CM/CD is the way to go for an experienced support player to rank up in solo queue.

As an inexperienced(2.8k mmr ~550 games) any-role player I have had more fun, and more wins in CD than in AP. Just be prepared to play not-supports, you would be surprised how many times I've asked to support but was told to mid.

If you are confident you can do this when facing a duel lane Viper you just lane by yourself which naturally pushes the lane towards you and you hug the tower, getting last hits and denying him easy ganks in his lane. If he's mid abuse highground advantage. Denying him kills in his lane helps to neuter him and makes sure you have no level discrepancy between you meaning that when you reach late game he won't be super fed and you won't be underleveled. However if your team is stupid Viper could just hang around your other lanes and get kills and than your problem continues. In team fights large stuns and nukes are a good way to kill him.

I prefer to play ranked cm when I want to solo queue and actually improve my skills, because it seems like the closest thing to a 'serious' environment queuing can get me. It tends to make people even more prone to rage than usual, but I've found I get raged at a lot less on support than any other role. You'll still need to listen to your allies bitching at each other (unless you just mute them), but such is life. I know other people who like all pick (though I'll never understand why) and random draft. As long as you have a reasonably large pool of heroes you can play, you should be fine in any mode, especially as a support player. And of course, if you have reasonable human beings who are decent at DotA for friends, just queue together for whatever mode you can all agree on. Reliable allies trump everything else.

(re-discovered that hero and it feels pretty strong and i like his skillset) most of the time i'm support in lane so try to get kills in lane with ganks and go arcane boots -> blink -> bracer -> refresher but after blink is done in the midgame it almost looks always like this: blink in, ult, e, q on a low hp target to maybe snipe a kill and then i die b/c they all unload their shit on me. ofc its fine and i dont mind dieing but is there another reasonable way to build him maybe with blademail / forcestaff and no arcanes to survive better? so mainly the question is, is blademail or forcestaff solving his mana probs?

Tide needs the mana pool of arcane boots, hard to skip. If they "unload all their shit on you" and you are support and already used all your spells, enjoy! Casual cloak, vitbooster, platemail are all fine. Maybe reconsider refresher, as it worth almost nothing until completed. Sometimes it's fine to slowly grind it but it can be better to have other items with an actual impact when under pressure. Forcetsaff is good too. Then whatever team item with aura will make it, Don't be afraid to take farm with tide as he farms decently with anchor smash and scales decently too and he's not that good at ganking without ulti or gold/xp.
