This isn't a strategy question so much, but there isn't a SQ:SA thread in dota general.

What mode in Dota should I be using to get better? I'm currently playing primarily random draft unranked play. My problem is, I don't get any players who are trying (or put in any research) to be good players. I'm picking support almost every game because no one will play support, but at the same time, in over 200 games (about 100 of which are from beta, I believe, since I've only played 100 or so since re-installing), I have yet to have 1 player actually farm and not just auto attack constantly in safe lane when I've been supporting.

Should I be playing ranked? CM? I know I'm a newer player, and I really dont want to ruin anyone's game who's taking it serious. I know when I was playing LoL a lot of people said don't even start ranked until you have like 500 games , a requisite number of rune pages, etc.

I want to learn new heroes, and I know I should, but right now I'm perpetually playing some mix between Veno, Venge, SK, lich, lina, SS, WD, tide, and CM. I'm not sure where to go from here. I want to learn more, but I feel the only thing I'm learning form most games is how much I wish I had a carry who knew how to farm.

if you're at the level where players are autoattacking don't worry about game mode or team composition
play whatever hero you want and focus on improving mechanics (lasthitting, map awareness, positioning, etc)

Whoa, hold your horses! What are you doing with such a nice attitude in this community!? :p

No but really, people dont give a fuck about anything. People will grief and destroy ranked games at all levels of play. And even if no one is destroying games on purpose you'll be blamed for doing it anyway. And people will report you (or at least say they will) for moving left when they wanted you to move right. Im quite sure with that attitude you wont be any more of a troublemaker than many already are. As long as you dont let others' attitude get to you, you should me more than ready to hit ranked.

On the other hand I dont think you'll notice much of an improvement in games either. "Ranked is the new unranked", as they said...

Nice attitude does not make your chances at winning any higher, nor does applying the 'team spirit' to all pick and other non-cm modes most of the time. Picking support won't take you anywhere if you think planting wards and securing your carry's farm is enough. The goal of the game is to destroy the ancient, and let's be fucking honest, if you count on your team to destroy it for you, then well - tough luck, you have to hope your team will destroy it. If the only measurement of improvement for you is having higher MMR than before, then you have to play in such fashion as to guarantee you will steadily gain it, there is no discussion about it (especially using any argument along the lines of 'but my team sucks').

Now that this is out of the picture, if you wish to get better at a hero, play that hero. If you wish to get better at a role, play that role and watch others perform it, especially the ones better than you. If you think ranked/unranked 'matters', then I can assure you it's an illusion of yours and the only thing that should matter to you is your experience and practice. The more you constraint yourself for whatever reason (being nice, not being flamed, playing a variety of heroes 'cause variety rocks (!?)), the longer it takes for you to consistently win more.

I think attitude helps. I had a 3v5 win recently, if i didn't talk to my peruvians teammates they wouldve left and i cant 1v5. 3v5 was doable and we won in the end.

always try to communicate with your fellow teammates, its a team game after all. people do listen especially in ranked cuz they want rating. flaming is pointless in pubs, not like you can 1v1 anybody and get them banned.

Couldn't disagree with this any more. 9/10 times, flaming a person will make them play even worse. Your play will suffer too, if you're spending half of the time calling out other people. You're not going to win the game by yourself, unless you're snowballing VERY hard and the enemy are also behind. You need the cooperation of your team. You're right, the objective of the game is to destroy the enemy throne, but there's a long and varied path to get there.

Yeah, having a bad attitude is an excellent way to make your team implode. The worst games of DotA are the ones that start with everyone shouting and pinging at each other. That said, it can be frustrating playing support because you're seldom a playmaker after the laning phase---you basically set things up for your cores to do their work, and if they just won't listen and charge 1v5 into an enemy team as AM before they have bfury then that's unfortunate. But you'll have the same problem playing any position; if you're a carry then you need good supports to farm well, if you're mid you need good ward coverage and good initiation to secure kills, if you're an initiator then you need your team to have your back when you blink in.

When I watch pros play pubs, they usually seem to pick big playmaker or solo push heroes that go mid. There's something to be said for that---it's the easiest way to get a lead for your team early without relying on someone else (plus it's flashy). But even then, you have to pay attention to what your team is doing and work with what you have. Which is pretty much what you have to do regardless of position.
Can someone please explain/how water falls with no rain?

Hi, I recently played a match where I was mid vs Wagamama... I got crushed and wanted some help. First of all I'd like to point out that I don't usually play mid and I'm usually in the carry role in serious games, and that I've barely played QoP either.

Anyway, this is the match: http://dotabuff.com/matches/676063667

The mid was QoP (me) vs Silencer (Waga). Bearing in mind what I wrote above, in my opinion there's no possible way for a QoP to win that match up, let alone the huge skill difference between the players. He started off with a rank in W, allowing him to have more attack damage than me (and his animation is superior) so I couldn't really farm/deny, and I have come to the conclusion that it's impossible to win a harass war/kill him, as he has ranged nukes and I need to be in melee range to make use of QoP's full arsenal - but I would surely die if I jumped in, and would have no way of getting out.

Silencer's animation isn't superior. They have basically identical animations (0.5 and 0.56 are basically indistinguishable), and QoP has a far faster projectile speed, as well as somewhat higher level 1 base damage (as you mentioned, Silencer can use his orb but this doesn't apply to denies).

Must have been me not being used to QoP then (as I said, I barely play her, can't even remember last time I did). But leaving out that I'd assume it's normal for Waga to out last hit me, was there anything I could do to win the lane?

Edit: I maybe was exaggerating getting crushed, I never died to him and had decent rune control, the only lacking part I felt was my farm.

qop vs silencer has slight advantage to qop
you shouldn't really have any issues lasthitting, it's the same as playing against any other mid
scream and poison are both pretty decent range, you don't need to be in melee range
silencer orb doesn't actually add that much damage until later levels, you can just straight up fight him if you get poison scream off
don't blink in on qop unless you see an opportunity. walk in, blink out whenever possible
if creeps are dying you can blink in scream autoattack, he can't fight you unless he has creep advantage

I'm only about 300 games in. I think I've gotten past the point where people are auto-attacking in lane =)

You'll never get better sitting behind your carry all day and "securing farm." Be vocal. Be aggressive. Don't be afraid to take risks. Try new things (smoke ganks, jungling, early rosh). You'll probably fail miserably the first few times (even if you practised with bots), but who cares? Most of those heroes you listed are great aggressive supports. Harass when you're in lane, roam around, try to get kills, gank mid. If you think you see a chance to tower dive for a kill, try it! Worst case, you and your lane partner feed a double-kill, but hopefully you learned something in the process. If you want to play mid, pick a mid hero and call it. Don't worry so much about getting flamed for sucking. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Conversely, remember that on average, the people in your games are equally "skilled" as you. If they can't last hit and you can, chances are, they're better at something else. Maybe they have better map awareness. Maybe they're smarter about taking fights. Focus on what you should be doing right, not on what others are doing wrong.

Thanks everyone for the replies and insight. This however is the thing I'd like to adress. The reason I'm playing support, is that I've tried playing the other roles. You can try to practice last hitting, mechanics, etc, but let me give you an example of a game I was in recently where I didn't play support. I was in random draft. I was last pick. We had a lich, CM, Bane, and i forget the last hero, but he wasn't a carry. I picked sven as most of the enemy team had picked carries so there weren't many left and asked to go to the safe lane (playing radiant). Lich comes with me.

I was first to leave the fountain with a stout, tangoes, salve, and branches. No one buys either a ward or courier. In our lane we have a sniper and slark. Lich auto attacks our creeps spams his ice blast on creeps waves, so our wave is pushed most of the game. I ask him not to do that and explain why, but get no response and he continues. I get auto attacked every time i go up to the creep wave, and have to constantly use my regen while their sniper is largely untouched. I see that this isn't going to go well, so I ask for a lane swap so i can go top with our CM. No response (In fact, the only thing anyone on my team but me said all game long was some combo of noob, wtf, and one guy speaking in voice chat in a foreign language; I won't presume to name the language, but it was most likely Spanish or Portuguese). I continue scraping by, getting creeps when I can, but I don't have much money. By 15 minutes into the game, our mid has something like 1000 gold worth of stuff (wand, base boots, and a talisman or something, with neither mid having a kill. Sniper has gotten 3 kills on lich, and their drow ranger up top has 5 kills and 3 assists. The game moves into team fighting and we have much less money (and therefore items) and we lose quite handily before 30 minutes.

So, what exactly am I supposed to learn from that game? I can't be up in the creep wave farming, our wave is constantly pushed, no one will talk to eachother. I was basically sitting at my tower all game. When I play support, at least I can ping runes so the mid might pick them up, harass the enemy laner (most of the time my carry will end up with about equal farm to the other guy anyway because he doesn't last hit, but at least he isn't constantly dying), stack camps, and buy items that will help other people who probably don't have many items themselves. I try to up my game and try things like dewarding and smoke ganks, but those seldom work; the enemy doesn't often buy wards, and all but one time (I've probably used smoke around 15 times) I've used smoke to try to gank someone, the guy I'm using smoke on goes up and attacks some creeps and breaks his smoke invisibility. In one humorous example, as radiant I had just harassed the enemy out of our safe lane, our mid was pushing and their top was pushing. I go over to mid and say "Get on the high ground and we'll smoke gank top," the guy doesn't move from the middle of the river on low ground, then I ping him a few times and he runs off to top lane and gets insta-gibbed.

Mid is probably the one I play second most, but while most people (in my experience) don't talk in the game much, they certainly do talk a lot BEFORE the game; mostly someone says Mid or afk or something similar, or 2 or 3 people are all arguing over who will play mid. I do fairly well in farm, but I do really need to work on ganking; mostly communication is poor, and I'll ping a few times before I get there, then go in and my allies will still be auto attacking creeps and not have noticed I've come in for a gank. I play DK the most mid, so most of the time, I just push towers. Once again, however, I usually don't get to play mid.

I also realize that saying "My Team Sucks" isn't a valid argument at all. I agree, I take full culpability; I can play better and I'm working on it. I do make mistakes and I learn from those, and try not to repeat them. I'm watching VODs to see how better players play, and it's helping me do better things when I'm playing support, mostly, and sometimes in teamfights with other characters. On the same token though, the list of things I can learn from some games is very small, as it's probably one sided one way or the other, and people aren't doing things in a manner where I can practice safe farming, or whatever.

In short, it's not that I can't play better, or that I'm playing perfectly or something; it's that I'm not learning much at all from my games because the level of play is so low. Maybe there's something different I should be doing and I'm completely missing something obvious, though.

Sometimes you get a shitty game like that and you just have to live with it, or alternatively quit playing dota. I'm pretty sure everyone has some games like that once in a while, and that's life when you're solo-queuing.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I got a question for advanced strategy, teamwork and drafting

1)
If the enemy manage to put their safe-trilane in other lane than our aggressive trilane. (Basically 50% chance to match our lane in their lane if both teams speculate where to put the lane for each respective desire)
Should we swap immediately? What if the enemy counter-swaps then? Should we keep swapping? 3-4 times?

2)
If the enemy invests 2 heroes for middle lane. (eg. mirana + bane)
Should we let them do this for free and play on with our other lanes?(ofc they will have high chance of winning their mid, trading lose for one of their other lanes)
